So Much More Than a Case

With the introduction of the iPhone 5 come the introduction of a slew of cases. Some are totally new, but some simply adapt previous generations to the new iPhone form factor. And while all protect your phone, few actually enhance the phone.

Meet iZZi Gadgets, makers of the Orbit. The Orbit offers a trio of interchangeable lenses – fisheye, wide-angle and telephoto – right on the case. Changing lenses is as easy as twisting the iDial. And the case is no slouch either. The duraluminum dual layer protection offers ample cushion for the inevitable blows. iZZi's Sure Hand Stabilizing Grip gives it a true camera feel too – easier for holding on. And for the videographer the Orbit comes equipped with three tripod mounts to meet your need. The Orbit costs a little more than the average case, going to show the quality of the lense systems. The iPhone 5 version runs $239.99 and the 4/4S version $229.99 on iZZi Gadgets site. Included for the price are the case, protective sleeve, wrist lanyard and cleaning cloth. And yes, replacement lenses are available at a cost should you need them. If the quality of the case interests you, but you don't need 3 lenses try the Solo, which saves about $100. Whatever you do don't let your iPhone's camera limit your photo and video capabilities. Augment them with the Orbit or Solo.

"…I'm Making Waaaaaffles"

What a classic line from Shrek. And what a great treat. Seriously, waffles have to be one of the most diverse breakfast foods. Think of all the things you can put on them: fresh fruit, syrup-y fruit, whipped cream, butter, maple syrup, nuts, icing, powdered sugar. Yuuuummmmm. But they tend to not be the easiest to eat if you don't have the time to sit down. Until now.

Nostalgia Electrics decided that waffles can be served in more than one way. Though it looks like an average waffle maker their 2-in-1 Breakfast Treats Maker has 5 separate 'compartments'. So you can bake up to five waffle fries at once. Or change out the nonstick cooking plates and make 5 French toast fries. You can make pancake fries too. If you are sitting at the table, kids and adults can more easily eat and taste a variety of toppings or dips with the smaller fry size. And the truly fun addition to this kitchen gadget is the 25 bamboo skewers. Stick a skewer in your concoction and make breakfast to go. Whatever your fancy, for $37.66 on Amazon.com it makes a nice addition to any kitchen looking for a unique take on a classic morning delicacy.

Thanks: CNET

New Microsoft Patent – The Future of Xbox Gaming?

Sure I remember my first Pong game, but I think the stand out for my kid will be the Xbox Kinect. She was enthralled with the whole immersive aspects of it and it was fun for a few days, but as I get to reading some of the recently filed patent information on what is purported to be the next big thing in gaming, I have got to admit there is a major bit of wow-factor. Could it become a reality? Heck, why not?

Check out what we have learned about what just may someday be, the Xbox. According to the aforementioned patent application, Microsoft may be bringing to life all our futuristic dreams with a totally immersive experience. This patent clearly states that “An immersive display environment is provided to a human user by projecting a peripheral image onto environmental surfaces around the user. The peripheral images serve as an extension to a primary image displayed on a primary display.” So I guess that means, that someday in what I hope, is the not too distant future, we might not be gaming on our TV’s, we’ll be gaming in the whole darn living room.

So is it possible that Microsoft is really planning to create this fully futuristic gaming environment? All the diagrams included in this particular filing, seem to depict a display environment involving a whole lot more than just the TV and the walls. I am already picturing the living room coming to life in the first totally immersive (sometimes even 3D) gaming environment where the peripheral image can also appear to surround the player. Yes, it looks like there may be headgear involved, yes there are special cameras and projectors, and yes! It could be totally awesome. When do you guys think we’ll actually get to “play” like this? and how much money are we going to need to save up to do it?

iCade 8-Bitty Retro Wireless Game Controller for iPhone/iPad/Android

You can say that the handheld console market has definitely taken a hit with the advent of the iPod touch and iPhone as viable alternatives for portable gaming entertainment, although granted, the touchscreen-enabled smartphone and portable media player do not really offer that much depth compared to a dedicated handheld console. Well, one thing about touchscreen controls is this – they do not end up too accurate, especially in a First Person Shooter setting, and that can end up to be rather frustrating. Change things for the better by grabbing fate by the neck with the $29.99 iCade 8-Bitty Retro Wireless Game Controller for iPhone/iPad/Android.

Yes sir, you now have a pocketable D-Pad style device for your portable gaming needs, regardless of whether you ply your trade on the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android-powered device. This classic retro-styled game controller will fit into your pocket nicely, and sports an 8 button control setup that includes a quartet of face buttons, Select, Start, and two shoulder buttons, and of course, the D-Pad for movement purposes. It works wirelessly via Bluetooth, and has an auto power save mode to prolong its gaming lifespan. Fully compatible with all iCade games, make sure you have a couple of AAA batteries around as spares always, just in case it runs out of juice.

Arctic Force Snowball Crossbow

For those of us living in the northern hemisphere, there is just one phrase which is very relevant at the moment – "Brace yourself, winter is coming." Having said that, don't be a bummer and stay cooped up at home all winter long just because you hate the snow. Embrace snow just like how you embrace the sunlight during summer, and perhaps you might learn to live a little bit more. How about having a snowball fight with your kids, when was the last time you did so? Assuming you and the missus have teamed up to go up against two of your terrible teens, you might want to offset the lack of agility on your part with power – without telling your kids, of course, by purchasing the £29.99 Arctic Force Snowball Crossbow.

What was once a medieval weapon of choice, the crossbow is definitely a timeless classic that has also been seen in use in The Walking Dead to pick off zombies from afar. The serious 'pull-and-release' action on the Arctic Force Snowball Crossbow will be able to launch snowballs up to 18 meters away, now how about that? You can always practice by using the included vinyl target first, before you end up shooting like a pro.

FAVI Mini Bluetooth keyboard comes with own trackpad

FAVI Entertainment might not be that established as Bang & Olufsen when it comes to audiovisual products despite being in the same industry, but perhaps that is due to their low profile as well as devices that do not reside on the high end side of things. Their most recent device introduced would be the pocket friendly Bluetooth keyboard that is simply known as the FAVI Mini Bluetooth. The Mini Bluetooth keyboard will not only allow you to get all of your typing done on the go, especially when you are working from the cloud on your smartphone device where a touchscreen display is not all that conducive to whip out a long document while you're on-the-go.

For starters, the Mini Bluetooth keyboard will come with a built-in trackpad that is ideal for pairing with your favorite device. This can be said to be one of the more versatile accessories you will own for your Android-powered device, as it comes with dedicated Android buttons to pave the way for easy access, while enabling one to enjoy music and video navigation through the use of special hotkeys. Not only that, if you are one who does a whole lot of presentations, you will not go wrong with the Mini Bluetooth, since it has its own built-in laser pointer.

Lightweight and portable, the FAVI Mini Bluetooth is said to deliver an ideal balance of speed, accuracy and comfort. Sporting an intuitive key layout, it paves the way for fast and accurate typing without causing more strain on your hands or fingers. The keyboard itself will come with backlit keys, letting you work in the dark as well as dimly lit areas. Since it should, in theory, play nice with all Bluetooth-enabled devices, you can also use it on a non-Bluetooth enabled device thanks to the inclusion of a Bluetooth USB receiver.

It has a wireless range of 50 feet and will retail for $49.99 a pop if you're interested. Any takers?

Google launches new Samsung Chromebook at just $249

I am quite sure that you have heard of the term Chromebook before – it is one of those computing machines that Google has commissioned to make sure that affordable and yet effective computing is made available to the masses. The thing is, the Chromebook did not really take off in that big a way, as consumers do not mind forking out additional dough to make sure that they have access to superior computing power. Well, there is a new Chromebook in town today as announced by Google, and this incredible piece of computing device retails for a mere $249. Yes sir, tipping the scales at a mere 2.5 pounds while measuring just 0.8" thin, the new Chromebook is definitely one of the lightest laptops on the market today. Will it be able to work decently enough for the average user?

Well, for starters, you have over half a dozen hours of battery life which should be more than adequate for the standard user, not to mention being able to access up to 100GB of free storage space on Google Drive, allowing you to access your data anywhere, anytime, as long as there is a decent Internet connection in tow.

Most folks would most probably wonder just what kind of performance that the new Samsung Chromebook is able to pack, and rest assured, it will not be found wanting. For starters, it will boot up in under 10 seconds and can more or less resume from where you left off almost instantly. Viewing high-resolution videos (in 1080p) are a cinch, and when your fingers dance all over the touchpad, you will notice smooth scrolling courtesy of a hardware-accelerated user interface. It does not matter if you are of the baby boomer generation or are averse to technology, the Samsung Chromebook allows you to have separate accounts where all your private data will remain accessible only to you, and not the other users.

Last but not least, if you tend to revolve your working life around Google's suite of products such as Gmail, Drive, Search, Maps, YouTube, Play or Google+ Hangouts, you will find that the new Samsung Chromebook serves everything up in a seamless manner.

A Wet Gadget Savior

Admit it. You or someone you know has done it. Personally I have done it twice. Once in a football stadium, once in the rain.  It is a careless move, usually brought on while rushing around. Yep, you know what I mean. You have subjected your phone to water! And if not a phone then perhaps an MP3 player, iPod or headphones. Being a veteran I can say some are recoverable. My phone in the rain was cured through a night in some uncooked rice. But some – like phone dropped in the toilet while at a game – have no hope simply because the supplies don't exist when the mishap occurs.

We all need RescueTec hanging around. RescueTec consists of a multi-layer aluminum foil pouch on the outside. Internally a recovery sachet contains a compound that attracts the water to it – essentially like a magenet. It pulls both water and vapor out of your drowned device. Conveniently, RescueTec tells you how much humidity is still present in the bag so you can judge when to remove your phone or gadget – though the makers recommend a minimum of 48 hours in the bag.  So does it work? According to their website yes. They tested on many major gadgets with big success and stories to illustrate. This ingenious device claims to be up to 700% more effective than the dry rice trick, and over 300% more effective than Silica Gel. If that does not convince you then take a look at their money back guarantee. RescueTec runs £16.99 (about $27.50) plus shipping to anywhere in the world.  A pretty minor investment for a smartphone or other device that rules parts of our lives. RescueTec makes sense to have in our car, suitcase, home or wherever an emergency may occur. Why risk not being prepared to save your mobile buddy?

Smell-o-phone on the Horizon

Smartphones stimulate 3 of the 5 senses. Touch, sight and hearing are all impacted. But what about the other two? Taste – well ok, maybe that won't ever happen. Who wants to lick their phone? Eeeeewww. But what about smell? We talk about, and some have attempted, the advertisers dream of  'smell-o-vision' TV. And now a Japanese company will soon reportedly launch an iPhone gadget to stimulate your snout.

As reported by CNET, Chaku Perfume developed Chat Perf, an iPhone app and attachable accessory to convey smells. An atomizer and smell tank come in the device which attaches to the phone's dock. Someone on the other end of the phone could then deliver a smell through your phone which is translated through the app. The attachment then releases the smell. The possibilities, particularly for advertisers, are limitless. Imagine your favorite restaurant sending the waft of a seasoned steak. Or maybe a laundromat infusing their coupons with the scent of freshly washed laundry. As CNET points out, Samsung already filed for a patent on a phone with smell producing device potentially delaying Chat Perf's entry into the US. If that does not delay them the anticipated price over $60 may be somewhat prohibitive. But who knows. Maybe smell-o-smartphones are the wave of the future and our nose will get as bombarded as our eyes and ears.

Star Wars R2D2 Smart Safe

You can say that the most accomplished astromech droid ever in terms of its lifespan would be R2D2, having made an appearance in just about all of the Star Wars shows, and he has also been the subject of many a Star Wars toy and merchandize. With the £29.99 Star Wars R2D2 Smart Safe from Firebox, you can now utter a modification of the classic line, "Store my stuff Artoo, you're my only hope!"

The Star Wars R2D2 Smart Safe works great as it is able to integrate itself seamlessly with your smartphone, be it of the Android or iOS persuasion. Whenever you enter the right code, the Star Wars R2D2 Smart Safe will open up. Of course, folks who are more than desperate would use a hammer, but that is another situation altogether. The Star Wars R2D2 Smart Safe relies on sensor based technology, meaning there is no need for a connection or a jack. This officially licensed product is powered by a trio of AAA batteries, so make sure you always have spares around the house!

The Quadski – by Land and By Sea

I’ve always been a fan of James Bond, and all his outrageous gadgets. It’s amazing to me how some of these fictional gizmos have actually become a reality in our lifetime. One of my stand out favorites was Mr. Bond’s white 1976 Lotus Esprit amphibious car, I really wanted one of those, and you really can own an amphibious vehicle these days. How cool is that?

Check out Gibb’s Quadski, allowing you to conquer both land and water, with the push of a button. You will feel more than Bond-like as your all terrain wheels retract and you are cruising the waterways at speeds of up to 45 miles an hour. Ready to hit the trails again? Another button press deploys your wheels and you are dripping water and throwing up dust!

The Quadski has a 4 cylinder, 1300cc, double over head cam, 16 valve BMW motor. The vehicle also boasts advanced suspension, giving riders smooth rides over water and rough terrain, and Gibb’s specialized water jet propulsion also provides amazing maneuverability  at both low speeds and reverse and can also provide all the power you need  to cruise at planing speeds. Wa-hoo!

Weighing in at around 1,200 pounds, the Quadski is pretty darn heavy when compared to your average quad. It’s 10.5 feet long, 5.2 feet wide, and 4.6 inches high, with a 5.9 foot wheelbase. Obviously the Quadski is no toy, it is definitely a rough and tumble jet powered personal watercraft atop a killer ATV.

The Quadski has been announced this month and there has yet to be a definitive price listed, but my research tells me that we’re probably looking at somewhere in the $40,000 range. Perhaps expensive for an ATV, but thats not really what this is… is it?  Didn’t think so.

Hot Cookie USB Cup Warmer

There is nothing quite like having a nice, piping hot cup of coffee or tea at your desk whenever you are working. The thing is, most of us work in air conditioned offices these days, and our hot beverage cools down – really fast, unless one uses a thermos flask or something of the equivalent. Well, if you happen to have an extra USB port on your notebook or computer that has collected dust bunnies and cobwebs due to its inactiveness, here is the £8.99 Hot Cookie USB Cup Warmer which you might want to consider getting as a desktop companion.

The name of the Hot Cookie USB Cup Warmer says it all, you will be able to enjoy a reasonably hot cuppa at all times, where it will draw power from that once idle USB port to make sure you need not endure the taste of cold coffee, ever again. Do be advised that the surface could end up to be very hot, and make sure you do not use it with plastic or foam cups.

Star Wars Razer Blade gaming laptop makes a splash, is truly unique

These days, carrying a gaming laptop around is not good enough, there is also the status that one wants to show off to the rest of the world. Even with copious amounts of money, you will be unable to pick up the Star Wars Razer Blade gaming laptop which is said to be worth more than a whopping $15,000, simply because this particular gaming laptop is literally one-of-a-kind, being made available to the winner in a sweepstakes that will see the lucky person walk away with this custom-designed Star Wars: The Old Republic Razer Blade gaming laptop. Of course, I suppose one of the more foolhardy millionaires who desperately wants one without leaving fate to chance might just attempt to pry the Star Wars Razer Blade gaming laptop from the sweepstakes winner by throwing a wad of cash in his or her direction, but that's another story for a different day.

Robert 'RazerGuy' Krakoff, president of Razer USA, said, "Star Wars provides the benchmark by which all entertainment media is measured, and the Razer Blade is the standard for true portability, power and innovation in PC gaming. The opportunity to work with LucasArts and BioWare on this fun project is a testament to our common love of great entertainment and ensuring the best possible experience for fans."

The Razer Blade maintains its insanely thin 0.88" profile despite carrying a 17.3" display that will certainly capture the attention of your eyes whenever you game with it. When merged with an ultra-slim power supply, the entire shebang tips the scales at just 6.46 pounds, now how about that? This is said to be less than 50% that of other gaming laptops in the market, automatically placing it on a pedestal as the lowest profile, lightest gaming laptop of its class. All that power without compromising on style and form factor? It certainly can be said to be a pint-sized killer, just like Master Yoda.

Sporting an SSD (solid-state drive) inside that delivers data up to three times faster than traditional hard drives, the Razer Blade will be powered by the latest Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA's GeForce graphics processor for blistering performance even at high quality resolutions. Not only that, there will be the inclusion of Razer's multi-award-winning Switchblade UI that integrates a LCD display/multi-touch panel and 10 dynamic adaptive tactile keys, letting you have full control of commands and functions within your fingertips. Feeling lucky?

Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam

When it comes to computer peripherals, there is one name that tends to linger on the minds and tongues of many – Swiss maestros Logitech, and this time around, they have something a little bit different from a mouse, and neither is it a keyboard. Basically, we are looking at the Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam which allows you to stream and create videos. It does not matter if you are a video professional, a blogger or a hobbyist, this new webcam delivers the flexibility for you to perform more than other webcams, and among the features include live streaming, the ability to shoot videos from two different angles or perhaps perform a video chat session on your favorite Mac machine.

With the Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam, Logitech claims that it is a snap to create professional-looking videos from your Mac, where you are able to stream live video directly to Ustream, rely on an iPad, iPhone or Mac to control and preview the video. The Logitech Broadcaster also doubles up as a second video camera if the situation and need arises, introducing a complementary perspective to capture content beyond your Mac's embedded webcam. Apart from that, it has built-in wireless connectivity that enables you to shoot from just about any angle you of your choice. If you are feeling more adventurous and creative, just capture the two views and stitch them together, now how about that?

Mike Culver, vice president of brand development for consumer computing platforms at Logitech, said, "The Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam lets you stream and record like a pro. It helps you make the most out of your existing Mac OS and iOS video setup for more dynamic live streaming, recording and video chatting. It goes where a built-in webcam can't, and with one press of a button, it's easy to switch between your built-in webcam and the Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam, so your friends and audience can enjoy a standard view or move around the room with you."

It can also let you record video with QuickTime or Photo Booth, edit and view videos with iMovie or Final Cut Pro, and video chat with FaceTime, iChat or Skype. The Logitech Broadcaster Wi-Fi Webcam is tipped to arrive in the US as well as across the pond, if it hasn't already, from this month onwards for $199.99 a pop.
