Learn to Glide from the Master

Years ago we told you about Yves Rossey, a.k.a. Jetman, when he managed to pull off some aerial loops and roll himself like a plane while wearing a jet pack, thousands of feet up in the air and at over 200 mph. He was 51 at the time. Rossey must be getting bored. He released another video a few weeks ago and he is jet free this time. Yep. A human glider. (at age 53 to boot!) And apparently there will be an opportunity in the future for you to learn the art of gliding from Jetman himself.

His human glider video (below) will make you stop and say WOW. Not just about the beautiful Swiss scenery. But he drops out of the plane at over 11,000 feet (3,500 meters). He maneuvers his way around peaks and through valleys at about 150mph and even builds up enough speed to regain 300 feet in one fell swoop. Remember, this is all in an unpowered glider! Like with the jet pack he landed safely with assistance of a built-in parachute.  The tease Jetman offers at the end of the video is the fact that Jetman Glider School is coming soon. Meaning you could learn from this pilot and inventor. There is no other information given yet, but we'll stay on it. Maybe you can join me in school!

Stick It!

Name the variety of things you have used as a typing stand. The wall, with paper taped to it, is probably on your list – at least until the corners curl and you have to use more tape…and pull paint off the wall. My office phone used to sort of work. It would prop things up at least. Maybe you got one of those fancy ones that hangs off the monitor. Sure stinks if you need to type off of something that isn't paper though. And of course there are the traditional typing stands that have a secure way to hold things down…which is inevitably in your way as you type.

What if you had a stand that sat upright next to you but didn't require a holder on it? Try out Justick, $29.98 on Solutions.com,  and you will get exactly that. Things just stick…hence the name. The surface of the stand is electro-adhesion, meaning anything flat that you put on it sticks to it. The patented surface literally grabs the object. And no, it is not static electricity. Using 4 AA batteries, energy literally flows through the Justick. And batteries should last you about 18 months. So no worries. Keep those documents, pictures or articles upright as you need them and don't hassle with makeshift stands anymore.

Man builds own Oreo Separator

I don't know about you, but I am an absolute sucker for Oreos. After all, I find it really difficult to resist the cream filling of each Oreo cookie, and all willpower just wilts when faced with a roll of Oreos and a glass of cold milk, as the twist and dunk combo is definitely one of my favorite comfort foods. Well, artist and inventor David Neevel must be one of the very few people in the world who hate the cream that lines each Oreo cookie, and the inventor side of him decided to do something quirky – be developing a machine that allows him to remove the creamy part of the Oreo cookie.

Neevel's Oreo Separator Machine, as he calls it, is a creation that defies logic – who in their right mind would resist the creamy bit of an Oreo cookie? Well, the invention will comprise of a mish mash of items, including aluminum, wood, a hatchet and floss, all put together in his garage in Portland, Oregon. Of course, Neevel did have to pay a price to build the Oreo Separator Machine, taking approximately two weeks of his time to do so. Neevel said, "It was a big time commitment. I had to work some long hours. I didn't see my girlfriend or my dog for hours at a time."

I don’t think he’d find a decent market who would be willing to pay him money for his invention, as scraping off the cream using the blunt edge of a butter knife is a whole lot cheaper.

Interactive window displays the future of shopping

Interactive shop window displays, now that is definitely something worth looking into, pardon the pun, if you happen to be a store owner who wants to find new and creative ways to draw the attention of the masses to your shop's doorsteps. Dutch creative agency …,staat has come up with a series of eight interactive window displays that is located at Selfridges, London, for their client Nike.

These unique interactive windows will assist Nike in parading their collection of sporting goods, and was also part of the House of Innovation collaboration that happened last summer. …,staat hopes that the interactive windows will be able to draw enough outside attention, which will then be translated to attract customers to take the first step and satisfy their piqued curiosity by stepping inside. Depending on which interactive window you are looking at, they will interact in different ways with passersby, where some will require you to get involved in a game, while others change their shape and design as a person walks past.

The advertised Nike products are the Nike+ Fuelband, Flyknit Racer, Reflective Windrunner, Hyper Elite Jersey, and Lunarglide sneakers, although this is not a conclusive list.

Japan approves worldwide sale of robot exoskeletons

Ever wondered how it feels like to wear a robotic suit on your daily walkabout? Japan, a country where robots rule (all right, I am saying that with extreme liberty. Robots do not "rule" there per se, but rather, the proliferation of robots in everyday life as well as culture is extremely well known), might soon help fuel an explosion of "robo mania" of sorts, by approving a new robot exoskeleton suit for a global rollout sometime down the road.

What you see above is a robot suit that is known as the "Hybrid Assistive Limb", or rather, HAL for short, which has been specially developed to help and assist both the elderly and disabled to get around, and the mission to spread the wonders of HAL around the world has been aided by the receipt of its global safety certificate in Japan yesterday, which means a worldwide rollout is on the cards.

The Hybrid Assistive Limb comes across as a power-assisted pair of legs that were developed by Japanese robot manufacturer Cyberdyne (good thing it is not a company known as Skynet!), and Cyberdyne has quite a proven track record for robotic assistance tools, where they have come up with somewhat similar robot arms in the past, too.

A quality assurance body in Japan issued the certificate that was based on a draft version of an international safety standard where personal robots are concerned, and a full certificate for the finished product is tipped to be approved later The HAL holds the honor of being the first nursing-care robot that was certified under the draft standard, according to a ministry official. HAL is powered by batteries, where it is capable of detecting muscle impulses in order to anticipate and support the user’s body movements.

You cannot buy one off the shelf just yet though, as it remains on lease (some 330 of them) across 150 hospitals, welfare and other facilities in Japan since 2010, where it costs $1,950 thereabouts to rent a suit for the entire year.

LG WCP-300 is smallest wireless charger in the world

Wireless charging has been an idea that was thrown around by many quarters for some time already, although it has not really caught on. Smartphones are the primary devices that support wireless charging capability, and for obvious reasons, too. After all, a smartphone is a device that we more or less tend to use up its supply of power each day, and will need to find a power outlet to plug in the charger and juice it up, and tablets come a close second. Well, wireless charging capability on select smartphones has been introduced in the past, but South Korean consumer electronics giant LG has decided to spruce things up a bit with wireless charging by introducing the LG WCP-300, and has attached the title of the "world's smallest wireless charger" to it at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, where it measures a mere 6.9cm in diameter.

At that particular size, is it no wonder that the WCP-300 deserves its "title"? Specially designed to carry portability in mind, the LG WCP-300 might be small, but it sure as heck carries plenty of bite. Do not be fooled by its relatively diminutive size, as the charging area on the LG WCP-300 is actually 1.7 times wider compared to LG's previous generation wireless charger. This new LG WCP-300 will also play nice with a standard 5-pin micro-USB charger, helping deliver the highest level of charging performance as well as user convenience.

Just how does the LG WCP-300 work? For starters, it will make use of electromagnetic induction technology, and will obviously have Qi certification thanks to the Wireless Power Consortium. Electromagnetic induction helps produce a magnetic field which will in turn, generate an electric current that juices up your device's batteries when placed on the charging pad. As long as your device supports the Qi standard, it is good to go.
