Gain Rewards with Amazon Coins

Yesterday (February 5, 2013) Amazon announced a new loyalty program launching in May. Amazon Coins will enable app purchases with credits/points/'coins'. Makes sense. Afterall, most of us are sucked into some points program – be it credit card miles, grocery store points or what not. But take a look at more of the details of Amazon Coins and see if you think it will be enough to gain loyalty of buyers and programmers.

Amazon Coins will reward millions of coins (what appear to be about $.01 each) to Kindle Fire users. Why Kindle Fire? To promote development and purchases of appstore apps. Amazon made no announcement as to how the "tens of millions of coins" will be rewarded. At a minimum it appears they will be available for straight purchase. But I can't help but think that Amazon will give some away to help promote interest in apps. Perhaps with digital content purchases? Anyway, Coins will serve as a virtual currency to purchase apps. The objective appears to get app developers focused on adding Fire-compatible content to the app store and pushing them to promote their own apps. Theoretically, if a user has coins stored up they would be more willing to try out something new – giving programmers their incentive. To be eligible, an app must be on their store by April 25. The developer's announcement details more of the what/who/how from their end. As an avid Amazon customer and Kindle Fire owner I can attest that Fire apps lag far behind their Android brethren  So perhaps this may prompt more interest from the dev community. And as a Fire owner I appreciate the possibility of some free credits coming my way for sticking with their tablet in a world of more advanced units. Only time will tell. So stay tuned to hear how Amazon Coins pans out.

Dine Doraemon Style

Sometimes you just can't get enough of your favorite cartoon. We can wake up to Superman alarm clocks, eat breakfast off our Angry Birds plates, take notes with our X-Men pen and crawl into bed clothed in our Avengers pajamas (ok, maybe not). Doraemon, famous Japanese animae series, is one of those iconic cartoons that deserves to be a part of our lives.

TV Asahi wants visitors to truly experience Doraemon when you visit their Tokyo headquarters. They converted the lobby café into Doraemon’s Secret Gadget Café to celebrate their 55th anniversary and release of the upcoming Doraemon: Nobita’s Secret Gadget Museum. Walk through the Dokodemo Door (Anywhere Door) and experience a variety of Doraemon gadgets. The menu includes items like a 4D Pocket Sandwich and Dora-gratin. There are plenty of smoothies, lattes with character images in the foam and other treats to remind you of the adventures of this Japanese classic. So if you pass through Tokyo in the next couple months stop off and get your Doraemon fix in a whole new way.

Black Hornet Nano Unmanned Air Vehicle

UAVs, or better known as Unmanned Air Vehicles, have become an indispensable part of modern day warfare. Basically, the chances of you wiping out an enemy is far higher if you happen to possess weapons of mass destruction as well as sport the latest that technology can offer. Well, folks in the British Army have a new "toy", so to speak, to play around with, and that would be the Black Hornet Nano Unmanned Air Vehicle which will measure approximately 4" x 1", and will offer troops who are on the ground the kind of situational awareness which is all too vital in sensitive missions.

The Black Hornet will come with a small camera that offers troops reliable full-motion video and still images. Instead of using one of those fiber optic cables which can be bent, soldiers can instead use it to peer around corners, or check out what lies on the other side of the wall, as well as over other obstacles in order to identify any hidden dangers as all the images captured by it will be shown off on a handheld terminal.

The Black Hornet Nano Unmanned Air Vehicle will come in the size of a child's toy, while carrying a revolutionary new system that is easy to tote around whenever you are on patrol, where it can also perform in harsh environments and windy conditions to boot. Tipping the scales for as little as 16 grams a pop, and it has been developed by Prox Dynamics AS of Norway as part of a £20 million contract, where 160 units will be developed alongside Marlborough Communications Ltd in Surrey.

Sergeant Christopher Petherbridge of the Brigade Reconnaissance Force in Afghanistan, said, "Black Hornet is definitely adding value, especially considering the lightweight nature of it. We use it to look for insurgent firing points and check out exposed areas of the ground before crossing, which is a real asset. It is very easy to operate and offers amazing capability to the guys on the ground."

Wash and Dry Under the Same Tap

Dyson Tap Dryer

We have all been there. You are in an airport, mall or other public bathroom. And you typically have a carry-on bag or your shopping bags or a child to keep an eye on. You approach the sink, scrub your  hands and then peer across the room realizing that you have to traipse 10 feet away with wet hands plus bags, child, etc. to get your hands dry. You can try the shopping bag shuffle (squeeze bags between your legs and gently move them along as you walk), or you can leave your items sitting by the sink at risk of who knows what. Not real convenient or sanitary. One thing is certain, the janitorial crew will have job security as long as the pathway of drips continues from tap to dryer.

The geniuses at Dyson have apparently observed us doing these crazy techniques. They think we need to contain our shuffling. Meet the Dyson Airblade Tap hand dryer. Integrated into the tap is a 1400W motor which can pull in 28 liters of filtered air a second. Your paws will be dry in just 14 seconds with this Dyson power. Spinning 92,000 times a minute may make you weary of breakage. But seven years of development enabled the fan to only have 3 moving parts. No rings, brushes and other pieces to break down. These futuristic faucets will be available beginning in March at a hefty price ($1500 and £1000). But, as Dyson points out, the savings on paper towels and hand dryer machines not to mention drip cleanup – may make these gadgets worth the investment.

Further info over on the Dyson site.

Eye Tracking Glasses to become mainstream?

The idiot box sitting in the middle of your living room will no longer be an idiot box for long. No sir, you need not fret any more, as it is slowly gaining its brain, just like how the scarecrow wants a brain in the Wizard of Oz. Thing is, just how far will technology progress where the TV is concerned? We have already seen the TV make the slow but sure move to being a Smart TV, and here we are with SMI 3D Eye Tracking by SensoMotoric Instruments that offers insight into realistic 3D user experience, while paving the way for real-time gaze interaction in virtual environments.

Sounds like a whole lot of Greek, no? Well, I will do my level best to convey the right message to the masses then. Basically, SensoMotoric Instruments (SMI) from Germany is an eye tracking technology leader in their field, and has just revealed an impressive piece of technology that will certainly add a wow factor to the overall user experience when it comes to studying gaze interaction applications in virtual environments. SMI was behind the first 3D glasses with full eye tracking capability in the world, where they partnered with Volfoni, a leading provider of 3D solutions.

Courtesy of Volfoni’s ActiveEye technology, the new smart glasses are able to merge mobile eye tracking with a realistic 3D user experience. This would result in completely new insights into a user’s interaction. Take for example, when one is navigating through virtual urban spaces or while looking at 3D product designs, thanks to its full head and motion tracking support, the technology is definitely a milestone for real-time gaze interaction with virtual avatars or 3D gaming applications.

Something tells me that the world of home consoles will change drastically in the near future, if efforts like the Eye Tracking Glasses continue to blossom.
