Not Your Standard Keyboard

How great would it be to mouse or type into thin air and see everything in front of you? Sort of like Minority Report. Rather than having a specific device to control actions or input (i.e. mouse or keyboard) it would rock to just have it all there – all the functions you need at your fingertips. That certainly may be realistic down the road. But peripherals will be necessary for the immediate future.

One creative designer decided that although a peripheral may be needed – why not make it suit more possible needs out there, while also looking like something from the future. The Luminae devices from TransluSense could potentially change how we navigate our computers. The glass Keyboard+ and Touchpad+ enable you to customize the controls you want via different overlays. Create a qwerty keyboard with 10-key pad. Or maybe you need 10-key and mouse pad. Maybe you want to use the device to both type and mouse (“Type and Swipe”). Or maybe your work requires a non-standard keyboard. You can literally have different overlays for different needs. Also choose your glowing LED color too. Built inside the Luminae units are cameras which judge when your hands break the light pattern of both visible and infrared LEDs. Based on the overlay you have on the keyboard will react. Sounds odd not to have a tactile keyboard. But it sure would be functional – and cool looking. At $500 this may not be the keyboard for everyone, but for those that are you may feel one step closer to the future.

Thanks: cnet

A Lens for 2-D or 3-D

The world of 3-D continues to grow. More 3-D movies come out every week, more 3-D TVs are sold. Whether you enjoy it or not 3-D is selling. Manufacturers are also enabling consumers to capture their own 3-D images too. What is better than remembering your Aunt Bessie at the family reunion than seeing her in 3-D? Ok, maybe seeing kids or pets is more fun. Anyway, the products are being produced.

Samsung previewed a new product at CES last week that should help to simplify the capturing of personal 3-D stills or video. Their first-of-its-kind 45mm 2-D/3-D single lens offers versatility for the latest generation of the popular NX camera system – the NX300. The lens offers the same form factor as a standard lens but offers the ability to capture 3-D video and stills. Simply flip a switch on the lens to get into 3-D mode. The unit manages to capture the image and then flip to the other side to record the subject from a different angle. It is not a zoom lens, so don't be getting too fancy. The lens goes on sale this spring for $500 with the compatible NX300 camera coming at the same time for $750. What an appropriate way to add another dimension (literally!) to your photos and video.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 announced for AT&T debut

If you are one who does your homework meticulously before making any serious purchase decisions where devices and gadgets are concerned, then for those out there who settled for the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107, here is an offer that you might want to take a closer sniff at. In fact, the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 has just been announced recently to be made available over at AT&T for $199.99 a pop – all without having to tie yourself down to a two-year commitment, now how about that? The Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 was specially designed for both consumer and business customers, where it has been positioned to be a low-cost, ultra portable tablet.

Underneath the hood, you will find Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile operating system powering this puppy on the software front, where it will also be duly accompanied by the likes of a 7-inch display, a front-facing camera for those video calls and perhaps a narcissistic photo of yourself once in a while, with a camera at the back to boot. Feel that you are missing out on apps? Fret not, as there is Google Play for you to enjoy your fill of apps, and just for a limited time only, customers will receive $100 off the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 as long as they make their purchase online alongside a two-year data plan agreement.

It is also nice to know that Lenovo has thrown in an SD memory card slot so that you can further expand on the kind and type of files that you want to carry with the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107, instead of being hampered by limited storage space via its on-board memory without any room for expansion purposes. Other features include GPS support that is enabled with AT&T's mobile internet, transforming the IdeaTab A2107 into a well-informed guide for effortless turn-by-turn navigation.

Z3RO Pro Computer from Xi3 Corporation

Forget about "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" – while that movie (and its subsequent sequels) were entertaining back in its time (being rather cheesy if you were to watch it today), what we are more interested in these days would be the miniaturization process of computers and all things silicone. Xi3 Corporation is proud to unveil their Z3RO Pro Computer, a small form factor computer that comes in the size of a tiny paperback, where it debuted at the recently concluded CES 2013.

It might just prove to be the computer to purchase for developing countries, and by those who want decent computing power without having to break the bank. The Z3RO Pro Computer will have a sticker price that starts from $399 onward, where it is meant to pave the ay forward for small form factor desktop computing. Housed in Xi3′s smallest chassis (1.875" x 4.875" x 3.625"), the Z3RO Pro Computer is meant for general computer use, where among them include home and office environments, and yet is also more than capable of handling specialty applications including digital signage environments and home theater use.

Jason A. Sullivan , founder, President and CEO, said, “The Z3RO Pro Computer is the ideal size for the ultimate in small form factor x86-based general computing. In this post-PC era, it’s clear that there’s no reason to buy a tower or mini-tower computer ever again. Not only does the Z3RO Pro Computer help round out the Xi3 product line, it also marks the end of desktop computing as we’ve known it.”

The Z3RO Pro Computer will feature a dual-core 64-bit, x86-based processor that runs at 1.65GHz (with 2MB of Level2 Cache), carry an integrated graphics processor (GPU) containing 80 graphics cores (or shaders), 4GB RAM, 16GB to 1TB of internal solid-state SSD storage (with up to 12Gbps throughput speeds), depending on your needs, a couple of display ports providing maximum resolution of 2560×1600 (including 1 HDMI/DisplayPort v1.2 and 1 Mini-DisplayPort v1.2), a quartet of eSATAp 3.0 ports, and a 1Gb Ethernet port. Expect it to be made available to the masses sometime in the second quarter of the year.

Outdoor Technology CHIPS announced

Outdoor Technology might be a name that only some are familiar with, so here is a little bit of an "educational class", so to speak. Basically, the company is the cutting-edge creator of action lifestyle accessories, where they will soon let you rock out under your helmet thanks to the introduction of CHIPS, a wireless drop-in audio system which will play nice in all helmets with audio enabled liners – a universal device, actually. Extreme sport enthusiasts will definitely fall in love with it, as they can now enjoy their favorite tunes while making calls without having to take off their helmets. The patent pending method of delivering wireless audio to helmets is touted to be the first its kind in the market, and it also delivers a tangle free solution to the action sports market.

Using it is a snap actually, being so simple, you can basically rock out and speak freely sans any pesky wires hanging around from April 2013 onwards in locations such as Chile, Australia and New Zealand. As for other regions, interested folks will just have to wait until winter 2013, where it will be accompanied by a sticker price tag of $129.95.

Caro Krissman, Co-Founder and CEO, said, "The CHIPS are a game changer, we solved a problem with a simple solution that changes the game for the hundreds millions who ski or board with helmets with no good audio system. Why have annoying wires and small buttons hanging from your helmet or no audio at all when you can be totally connected yet unplugged with simple easy to use controls."

Using the Outdoor Technology CHIPS will require you to just drop the CHIPS into the slots within a helmet liner, and you can then listen to your favorite tunes or make calls without ever having to remove your helmet. Thanks to a minimalist two button design, you are able to operate the CHIPS inside any liner, even when you are equipped with the bulkiest gloves or mittens. Double click the left earpiece and you can raise the volume just in case the other party is a little bit hard to hear, and double click again to lower the volume. In order to play/pause, press the right earpiece once and you're good to go.
