Comfortably Light Your Way

As daylight savings end and we plunge into earlier darkness you should check on the status of your flashlights. We certainly don't let the dark prevent us from walking places. But dang, carrying a cylindrical flashlight sure is not comfortable. Face it, a standard flashlight may be good for holding in your mouth while you crawl in the attic. But for walking the dog or taking an evening stroll the shape is awkward. Not to mention the fact that the beam never seems to cover everything you want to see.

Let me introduce the Nightlighter, $19.95 on firstSTREET. First off the unit fits nicely in the hand and the weight is very well balanced as batteries are housed closer to the handle. It seems a natural in the hand. And there is not just one light. Four ultra bright LEDs face forward and two ultra bright LEDs point downward. Yes, two focuses for the light. No more flipping the flashlight up and down and up and down. See what is at your feet while not taking light off of where you are headed. And if you don't need both beams simply flip the three-way switch move between both lights or one or the other. The thumb rest contains the on/off switch for easy access. Three AAA batteries are included too.  So whether for you or someone in your life, if you walk at night walk in comfort and light with the Nightlighter.

Watch an iPad Mini Strip Show

Happy iPad Mini launch day! Sure the iPad Mini is cute. But the gurus at ifixit.com – home of repair manuals and parts for gadgets galore – want to get to the bottom of the device. So yes, they dissected an out-of-the-box unit earlier this week in their iPad Mini Teardown. View the step by step process at the video below or on their website.

Interesting findings along the way include:

  • Held together with "lots of adhesive"
  • Glass not fused to the front display – makes for easy repairability
  • Same metal plate protecting internals, like with newest iPod Touch
  • Confusion as to batteries real specs (information on the battery varies versus spec information released by Apple). Regardless, ifixit seems curious as to whether battery will last 10 hours – as reported – as the mini battery has about 50% of the power of an iPad 2.
  • Dock connector sodered to the logic board – means connector replacement has to include a new board

As they do with other devices, ifixit gives the iPad Mini a 'repairability  score'. I'll let you watch the video to see the results. If an iPad Mini may be in your future but you are seeking feedback take a look and give ifixit's findings consideration before you buy.

High Tech for the Slopes

It seems that data is everywhere these days. We track and monitor things like stocks, work stats, fitness stats, health numbers, car performance. You are in a small group if you only get texts on one device anymore. And with satellite technology we can pinpoint where we are – and how to get places – within a few feet. And with the introduction of the Oakley Airwave™ the use of data now extends to the slopes.

The sunglass and goggle gurus at Oakley think that we should not be limited in where we access data. The Airwave, $599.95 at Oakley.com or Apple stores, incorporates technologies used in smartphones, cars and the like into functional goggles. The device includes a load of sensors for gyroscope and accelerometer plus GPS and Bluetooth. Built into the visor is a finger nail sized display. When you need to access information simply move your eye towards the prisim lense and on the display will be the information you want. Airwave enables you to track jump analytics (height, distance, airtime). Log your elevation, speed and descent through the day too. Also tracked is location information. You can call up a map of the resort to determine your location or destination. And of course you can sync with other Airwave users to track their whereabouts.  A wristband remote control and app (included) for iOS or Android enables you to also see incoming calls and text messages too. Once you get your data fix, take off again enjoy unobstructed vision of the terrain. Of course Airwave comes with Oakley's Switchlock™ technology, enabling easy swap out of lenses based on conditions. And the goggles are constructed of lightweight but durable O® Matter for optimum comfort and flexibility.

There is no reason not to trust Oakley's stellar record of performance when it comes to skiing/snowboarding goggles. And with the addition of technology the performance of the goggles – and perhaps you – simply gets better and better.

Roccat launches Kone XTD and Pure models

German computer peripherals manufacturer Roccat is most famous for their range of gaming mice and keyboards, and this time around, they have introduced a couple of new models for the masses – the Roccat Kone XTD and Pure models. Both mice will continue to retain the famous Kone form factor, features as well as performance, where the Roccat Pure will boast of a profile that is 9% slimmer than before while sporting a new Roccat Titan Wheel and Click Master switch tech. Hey, if you are in the market for a new mouse (or two), you might as well see what Roccat has to offer and who knows, it might just prove to be a union with your hand that you will not regret.

The Roccat Kone XTD has been dubbed by some to be the "Max Customization Gaming Mouse", while the Roccat Kone Pure is known as the "Core Performance Gaming Mouse", where both of the new mice should have already hit Europe since October 26th onwards, while folks living in North America as well as Asia will only be on the receiving end of them before December rolls around.

In terms of performance, we are looking at world beaters here, where you will be able to experience a fully-adjustable 8200 DPI ProAim R3 laser sensor that boasts of a whopping 41 DPI settings that range from 200 to 8200, in addition to a 32-bit Turbo Core V2 72MHz ARM MCU processor, 576KB of on-board memory, as well as what Roccat deems to be the most advanced Tracking & Distance Control Unit in the world. All of the components are said to function in clockwork unison, delivering the world's most impressive speed, control and accuracy. Of course, all of the above mentioned might just be marketing speak, and even if it is true, you will still need to give either mouse a test run before you agree with the conclusions.

After all, a gaming mouse is a very personal piece of equipment, and different gamers play games differently, so the way they wield their mice is not the same as the gamer sitting next to them.

Tetris Animated Alarm Clock

What helps you get out from bed in the mornings? Does it have anything to do with that pet dog of you who slobbers all over your face, signalling that it is time to roll out of bed and be ready to meet a brand new day? Well, most folks would prefer the use of an alarm clock, even better yet is if the alarm clock itself comes with a built-in Snooze function. For video game fans who have a strong love for Tetris, then you can wake up feeling like a kid all over again to the $29.99 Tetris Animated Alarm Clock.

The alarm sound will not be that of an incessant cockerel exercising its throat, and neither will it be the irritating ring of the classic bell alarm clock, but rather, it will play back the classic Tetris theme song. Individual minutes are formed from water falling Tetriminos, and you can literally spend watching your minutes ticking by. Sporting 12/24 hour clock options, it will be updated with modern functions like snooze and a backlit display, carrying a trio of AA batteries with Tetriminos-shaped buttons up front.

8GB Steampunk Thumb Drive

Love all things to do with the old and new, merged together under the guise of "steampunk"? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you would be pleased to hear that Thinkgeek has made available the $29.99 8GB Steampunk Thumb Drive to the masses. This is definitely a device that looks old school, and yet it delivers modern day storage. Made out of heavy copper-plated metal for that added touch of durability, this is not water resistant, so don't go soaking it in a tub of water along with the rest of your laundry. At least it comes in a copper-plated metal tin that is wrapped in an old-looking box for that added touch of authenticity and realism.

Each of the Steampunk Thumb Drives will offer up to 8GB of storage space – not an iota more or less. Even better is, since it is covered in copper-plated metal, it ought to be able to jive nicely into just about any other Steampunk costume in your closet. There is even a metal tin which it comes in for storage purposes, and the key ring itself is removable for that added touch of portability. Come to think of it, this does seem to shape up to be a pretty decent Christmas tree ornament, no?
