Cell Phone = Germ Haven

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 11:45 AM PDT

We try to bring you gadget news here at CoolestGadgets. But at the same time we want to look out for your well being. This story should come as a surprise to no one. Sometimes a reality check is in order though.

Your cell phone contains 10 times the bacteria of a toilet seat. Got your attention?

Charles Gerba, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona, is conducting ongoing experiments measuring the amounts of bugs on the surface of phones. His findings determined that phones are often passed among people, but never cleaned. So any bug that your friend has will soon be on your phone. It is inevitable that the bacteria spreads. We have all heard stories about bacteria on keyboards, cash machines and grocery carts. But it is safe to say we use our cell phones – and share them – more often.

So take action – give your electronics a once over with an antibacterial wipe every so often and cut down on the bugs in your life.

Amazon Locker – Waits for your Packages, So You Don’t Have To

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 09:40 AM PDT

I don’t know whats happened to me over the years but going out to the shopping malls anytime after Thanksgiving is a fate worse than death. I choose instead, to pick out my gifts online and save them on my wishlist, simply adding them to my shopping cart at whatever pace my wallet will allow. The only inconvenience that remains (besides my credit card bill) is actually being there to sign for the stuff, sometimes its truly a hassle… probably for the delivery guy too, I mean how many times does he want to try and deliver my light up faux crystal punch fountain? Seriously?

Well, it seems like Amazon is trying to think of everything this season, by launching its Amazon Locker service. Amazon Locker simply lets you get your packages at secure locker type locations throughout the country. You find the locker that’s closest to where you want to be by using a zip code, address or even a national landmark and then you use that address when you check out. You can even save your desired locker locations for use during subsequent purchases.

The whole process seems easy as pie, and has a whole slew of advantages, including easy one stop delivery for the drivers, anytime parcel pick up for the customers, as well as increased package safety. Indeed I have had a package or 2 that may have “walked off” my doorstep in unintended hands and last but not least, it allows for stealth package delivery, so no surprises are spoiled and no one needs to know about the well, ahem…. lets just say stuff no one needs to know about!

So, to pick up your Amazon Locker package you simply take a unique pick-up code that you receive via email or a text message to your chosen locker location and enter your code into the touch screen display and Voila! The compartment with your package magically opens. Sound good to you? Check out amazon.com for more information and watch for locker locations coming soon.

LaunchPort – Charging your iPad in Grand Style

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 08:51 AM PDT

I look around my house and see my devices charging at every conceivable electric outlet, I have all sorts of electronics plugged into ugly little power strips all over the place. I have tried hiding the cords or using more attractive charging stations, but in the end I have a tangled mess of cords and gadgets stuck in every corner. Maybe we should go the other way, and stop trying to hide our charging gadgetry and make the charger an objet d’art. What if our chargers were something beautiful to behold?

Check out Strut’s LaunchPort, sure, it’s an incredibly convenient and wireless way to charge your iPad, but thats not the best part. The LaunchPort is a jewelry grade, stainless steel hand polished sphere shaped pedestal, used in conjunction with a uniquely handcrafted Burl wood, carbon fiber or leopard print case, that charges your iPad and looks simply beautiful doing it.

Using powerful magnets that easily secure the gorgeous case to the magnificent pedestal, the unit can tilt, turn and pivot to almost any angle and the specialty case actually directs the sound from the rear of your iPad up to the front, allowing increased volume and clarity over your stand alone iPad. The case can be removed should you desire it, and a mini USB is also included in the event you require charging somewhere away from the base station.

The pedestal is available in chrome, matte black and gloss white with special order engraving and custom finishes available, same goes for the elaborate cases which have many special order options in addition to the 5 standard finishes currently available. Please visit Strutlaunchport.com to learn more and as you may have guessed, this much style doesn’t come cheap, the Launchport rings in at about 1200 bucks for the pedestal with the case. Is that too much money for aesthetic bliss?

Ready, Set, Draw…Your Thermometer

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 08:22 AM PDT

Overcooking food. There is no better way to kick a nice evening off than burning the steaks or overcooking the potatoes. Think of it, you have friends over, you are trying to be host(ess) and get all the food finalized. Make sure the grill is a certain temp, make sure the water on the stove is hot enough, keep the side dishes warm…but not cooking. It is a challenge to juggle all the tasks! Arm yourself with a tool that can help you manage times like this, and more.

The Kintrex IRT0421, built to measure temperatures from a distance, requires no contact with food. Using an infrared sensor, the unit provides temperatures from -76 to 932°F. Hopefully your meat doesn't get hotter than that. The pistol-grip design makes it easy to handle and by not touching the food you maintain a sanitary environment. Beam it at the grill to check temperature, beam it at the warming items to ensure they quit cooking. Not to mention the fact you can use it to stay on top of temperatures anywhere. Two AAA batteries for power means you can replace them as needed. Manage all the temperatures in your life for $46.45 on Amazon.

Western Digital rolls out latest My Passport portable hard drives

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 06:30 AM PDT

When it comes to the world of hard drives (portable or otherwise), you can be sure that the name Western Digital is bound to pop up. How could it not? They are continuously on the cutting edge of hard drive and storage technology, and cater to the masses with reliable products at decent prices (according to my experience with their devices to date, of course, different people might have something else to say). In order to remain ahead of the pack, Western Digital has introduced a new My Passport Edge family of portable hard drives that will work on both the PC and Mac platforms. Let us take a closer look at just what the My Passport Edge delivers right after the jump.

For starters, the My Passport Edge and My Passport Edge for Mac (so that is how you tell the difference when it comes to the kind of platform it works on) will boast 500GB of storage space which frankly, is not too much these days as we are more into terabyte territory now. At least it is capable of lightning fast transfer with a USB 3.0 interface, allowing you to effectively manage, share and enjoy digital content everywhere you go. Sporting a sleek, ultra-slim design, both My Passport Edge portable hard drives are a snap to tote around, while you can rest easy knowing that different security features incorporated within will protect the drive’s content from unauthorized access.

Mac users tend to be more particular about industrial design, which is why the My Passport Edge for Mac portable hard drive will not look out of place when you plug it into MacBook computers and MacBook Air notebooks, thanks to its all-aluminum exterior which also has another function – to protect the drive and its contents from everyday bumps. Compatible with Apple Time Machine as well, you know that the My Passport Edge for Mac is ready to rock and roll right out of the box with your Mac.

As for the PC flavor of My Passport Edge, this portable hard drive incorporates WD SmartWare continuous and automatic backup software which can create a copy of users’ computers’ content so that your personal digital files are backed-up and protected just in case you lose your computer by accident or via theft. A premium finish gives it that sleek look for sure.

Both models will come with a 3-year limited warranty, where the My Passport Edge and My Passport Edge for Mac will retail for $109.99 and $119.99, respectively.

JBL embarks on new adventure with Nokia’s upcoming Lumia handsets

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT

It was not too long ago (just a couple of days, actually) that Nokia introduced a couple of new Windows Phone 8-powered devices, with the Nokia Lumia 920 leading the helm. Well, what is the whole point of a next generation flagship smartphone if there are no equally great accessories to go along with it? This is where JBL comes in, where the famous audio company has introduced speakers for the new Lumia devices that are touted to deliver wireless streaming and charging capabilities to boot. We shall look at their individual merits in the extended post.

The JBL PowerUp and JBL PlayUp will be under scrutiny here, where both of them will ride the wirelessly boat by "hooking up" to the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 through their respective NFC chips. Not only that, the JBL PowerUp will boast of Qi wireless charging capability, letting Lumia owners place the handset on the dock in order to get it playing or charging – no hassles, dude!

Juicing up your device while having it play music is not a new idea with the plethora of audio docks out there in the market at the moment, but doing both wirelessly is a novel idea. Just in case you still have some devices that happen to be relics from the past, you can always rely on the classic 3.5mm audio connector, now how about that?

Sachin Lawande, executive vice president of HARMAN and co-president of HARMAN Lifestyle and Infotainment, said, "These JBL speakers were designed for Nokia's on-the-go music lover who wants a quality wireless audio performance without sacrificing convenience. The JBL PowerUp uses the latest in wireless technologies such as near-field communications to create an ultra-convenient yet high-performance speaker – just drop your phone on the speaker to charge and play. Music fans will hear the truth and appreciate the quality audio experience they expect from JBL."

Last but not least, pricing details. The JBL PlayUp is tipped to retail for $149 a pop, while those who want the beefier JBL PowerUp will have to fork out three Benjamins for this puppy as they arrive later this year.
