Do you Think these Clothes are Going to Clean Themselves?

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 08:21 AM PDT

Few things strike as much dread into the middle of my day as much as the laundry. I think its right up there on my list of things I have learned to hate the drudgery  of quite a long time ago. Vacuuming, kitty litter emptying and laundry. Hate em. We’ve put a man on the moon, how come I’m still doing this stuff the way my mom used to? Sure the washing machine is bigger and higher tech… but its the same boring job.

Well, scientists might actually have my best interests at heart. Mingce Long and  Deyong Wu say they have developed a fabric coated with titanium dioxide (think suntan lotion ingredient) That breaks down dirt and kills different microbes when exposed to certain kinds of light, more specifically, their product can clean itself when exposed to sunlight… very nice.

The report on this fabric describes a regular cotton fabric that’s coated with nanoparticles (I told you about them yesterday, they’re a size between molecular and microscopic) made from a compound of titanium dioxide and nitrogen. Their tests show that a cotton fabric coated with theses particles removed an orange dye stain when it was exposed to sunlight, and the coating even stayed intact after washing and drying. What a minute, washing and drying? Am I missing the point here?

A similar study is being done at the University of California, where scientists have created another compound that also allows cotton to break down toxins and bacteria when exposed to light. Heck, I’ll just make my family eat dinner outside in the sun, and kill two birds with one stone. Now we just have to figure out a way for the food to cook itself, then, life will be good.

Bellyak Body Boat- Having Fun, Face First

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 07:36 AM PDT

I love the water. I have to say that as much as I hate to exercise, when you put me in the water I just can’t stop myself. I love surfing and waterskiing, swimming, diving and just generally floating around in any way. There have been a quite a few developments in terms of water sports over the years, some have been pretty neat, others have been flat out wacky. Let’s see where we weigh in on this one.

Check out the Bellyak, what seems to be a cross between surfing and kayaking on your stomach, the Bellyak floats the rider through and over the water ,and allows for quick and easy directional changes. The boat, which weighs in at under 30 pounds is about 8 feet long and has room for you to bring some stuff with you, while you are out and and about exploring the river on your Bellyak.

Available in 2 different models, the “Frequency” and the “Play” the folks that made the Bellyak took the idea seriously. The Frequency is for beginners and offers more stability and control so that folks just entering into the world of the Bellyak can feel at ease, while having fun. The Play on the other hand offers experienced riders a performance hull and a shorter length (about 7.5 feet) meant to push the limits, turning your Bellyak trip, into the ride of your life.

Different from river boarding or kayaking, the Bellyak can be ridden kneeling, sitting or lying down and allows for more variety in both your moves and maneuverability than most other watercraft. The Frequency model is available right now with the sporty Play model following close behind. Please visit the bellyak.com website for pricing and availability information. Sounds like fun, no?

Zinken headphones from Urbanears

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 06:30 AM PDT

Urbanears claim that their most ambitious headphone to date would be the Zinken pair of headphones – which is said to be a brand new approach to the concept of a headphone that sees it function as a musical instrument. It was specially developed with the professional DJ in mind, although there is a caveat to this – it will pay adequate respect to the wallet of the amateur. Basically, I am saying that that you will get the best bang for your buck with the purchase of a Zinken, where we will explore its fair share of features such as the TurnCable and the ZoundPlug in the extended post.

Let us take a look at the TurnCable first. Originally constructed with a rugged Kevlar within, the TurnCable boasts of a 6.3mm plug that can be used with a mixer, in addition to a 3.5mm for mobile devices that range from phones to MP3 players, although I do wonder who uses the latter any more these days. The TurnCable also boasts of a coiled section that gives you the freedom to move without requiring to disrupt the sound that comes from your headphones.

As for the ZoundPlug, this was originally featured on the Urbanears Plattan headphone, where the ZoundPlug might point towards a plug, but rather, it is an audio output socket which enables another person to share exactly what you are listening to at that point in time through plugging in to the ZoundPlug.

To sum it up, the Zinken headphones was specially designed to be ultra wearable kind of headphone which can basically be worn for hours on end at a time without you ending up with a case of extremely hot ears. Not only that, it will come with a padded headband as well as comfortable ear cushions to deliver a longer period of wearability. In addition, the increased foam density of the ear cushions will enable you to achieve far superior noise isolation, with the swivel ear cups enabling you to adjust your playing style.

Urbanears is also mindful enough to work with materials which do not absorb odors and sweat, definitely a good idea for those moments when you are enjoying marathon listening sessions. The asking price for the Zinken as it arrives in the full-range of Urbanears colors would stand at $140 a pop.

Dead On Annihilator Superhammer

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 05:30 AM PDT

Is a hammer just a hammer? I suppose so, but is there such a thing as a “superhammer”? I suppose so, as Thinkgeek has just announced the $39.99 Dead On Annihilator Superhammer which is a multi-purpose hand tool that made short work of difficult jobs. It is capable of hammering nails into wood, not to mention being able to pull out nails, pry objects open, bash things into place, perform a Hulk smash, and of course, after you sweat it out, being able to pop open your favorite bottle of ice cold beer.

Not only that, this seems to be the ideal tool to have in your hands at the seemingly impending zombie apocalypse, which we have already started to hear of some folks around the world actually devouring the faces of other people. This is a wicked anti-zombie device, where the spike that is mounted at the bottom is capable of piercing through the skull of a walker, not to mention making you into the main focal point of attack by more intelligent zombies. Otherwise, just pass this over to Alice of Resident Evil fame and see her rack up the body count.

R2-D2 now carries popcorn and drinks

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 05:00 AM PDT

The world’s most famous astromech droid – R2-D2 of Star Wars fame, who has seen Darth Vader as Anakin Skywalker back in his younger Jedi days, is an extremely resourceful astromech droid, more often than not using his logic circuits to be able to get out of sticky spots without the need for any Jedi powers. Well, this time around, we have R2-D2 being a server of popcorn and drinks, retailing for $48.95 a pop in the form of the Disney Star Wars R2-D2 Plastic Popcorn Bucket & Drink Stein Set.

Needless to say, food and drink are not included with each purchase, where you will open up R2-D2′s head so that it will reveal the space required to hold your favorite beverage, while the popcorn bucket can be detached and hung on the side when it is in use. This special edition popcorn bucket was created to commemorate the re-opening of the Star Wars attraction which happened early last month. Definitely one for the hardcore Star Wars fan, others might just want to pick this up as a novelty item.
