Willow Glass – Gorilla Glass gets a Thinner, more Flexible Sister

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:26 PM PDT

Do you ever try to imagine the future? Do you fantasize about what cellphones may be like years from now? Are you still waiting for holographic television and implanted electronics or flying cars? I love to wonder about the future, and some amazing high-tech stuff is coming sooner than you think!

Corning, the New York-based developer of the now famous Gorilla Glass, has just announced the next generation of super thin material, and its called Willow Glass. This new glass is as thin as a sheet of paper, is amazingly flexible, and can wrap around just about anything leading to a whole host of futuristic applications.

Corning Willow Glass could lead to several cost-efficient applications including many of today's slim displays, and some uber-cool smart surfaces of the future. The thinness, strength, and flexibility of this glass has the potential to enable displays to be "wrapped" around a device or a structure, it can be rolled, or folded and flattened.

Willow Glass holds tremendous  promise, not only because of its thinness and bendability, but because it could very well revolutionize the form and shape of smartphones, TVs, tablets, e-readers and a whole host of other consumer electronic devices.

It is likely that Willow Glass will be used to replace Gorilla Glass in many of its existing applications and it will start turning up in ways you never thought possible. Folks are already coming up with great ideas for this new material. Can you say “Flexi-reader”? Look for it in a pocket near you.

LG’s Mega-Capacity Front Loader – Bigger, Better, Faster

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:16 PM PDT

I have to say there isn’t too much I look forward to less, than doing the laundry. Okay, maybe ironing and cleaning the bathrooms, but laundry is certainly right up there on my list of “I think I’ll wait till tomorrow” chores.

The good news is that that LG has just introduced the Mega-Capacity TurboWash, that can wash a whole lot more clothes in fewer loads, and save you up to 20 minutes of time per load… which in turn can free you up to do a million other household chores you don’t really like, including cleaning out the fridge and emptying the kitty litter box.

LG’s new technology actually combines the Spin and Rinse cycles to save us about 20 minutes —while still maintaining superior cleaning performance. What’s more, LG’s 6 Motion technology utilizes six wash motions that LG likes to call Tumbling, Scrubbing, Filtration, Rolling, Stepping and Swinging, all in various combinations (just like the moves your great-great grandmother used to put on the families dirty clothes way back in the day) and an upgraded control panel that allows easy access to all functions and adds to the washing machine’s stylish and elegant design.

The LG Mega-Capacity TurboWash Front-Load Washer also features Smart Diagnosis technology that helps diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues, which helps prevent costly and inconvenient service visits. Additionally, a downloadable smartphone application alerts customers to simple problems, such as a loose water hose or a door being left open. Imagine that, a washing machine that texts you…

The LG Mega-Capacity Washer will be available to consumers in mid-June, at stores nationwide with suggested retail prices starting at $1,399. To find out more visit LG.com

Pong carries most advanced iPad case in the world

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 06:30 AM PDT

When the word “Pong” is mentioned, chances are the geek community would think of one of the earliest successes in the world of video games, but the Pong which we are talking about this time around has nothing to do with video games. In fact, it is not even software, but hardware-based.

I do know that iPad cases are dime a dozen all over the place, where most of them tend to lean more on the aesthetics instead of concentrating on function, although there are are some companies who churn out the ideal of both form and function. The Pong iPad case is said to be the most advanced of its kind in the world, and this is a claim that certainly needs looking into right after the jump.

Just what makes Pong’s offering come up with a rather self-trumpeting statement? For one, it is said to not only offer protection for your spanking new iPad, but it will also be able to give the 3G/4G and Wi-Fi reception a boost, improving its signal strength in addition to enhancing your download and upload speeds, while increasing its range without sacrificing on the more practical issues of protecting your iPad from knocks, drops and minor scratches.

Not only that, if you have a fear of developing cancer due to being around so many mobile devices these days, the Pong iPad case does its bit by claiming to reduce your exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR). Just what is EMR? It is basically a form of microwave energy that mobile devices use to communicate, where the World Health Organization has even classified it as a Class 2B carcinogen.

Pong’s lofty claims are not without any basis or proof, as side-by-side tests performed in independent laboratories certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) did show that Pong’s offering allows the iPad to deliver up to a 10X increase in cellular signal strength over any other case; up to a 9X improvement in Wi-Fi reception and download and upload speeds, and a 2X increase in range, over other leading brands; and up to 1.6X greater range than the iPad alone. Not only that, it is shown to reduce users’ exposure to cellular radiation by up to 83% below FCC safety limits, and Wi-Fi radiation exposure by up to 72%.

It will come in Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G/4G iPad model options, where prices start from $119.99 upwards.

Microsoft and Nike to change the way fitness works at home

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Now, this might be a bit of an old hat, but did not the fitness revolution worked alongside video games when the Nintendo Wii was released, not to mention having the Wii Fit title accompany it? I suppose Microsoft literally took things to the next level with the introduction of their Kinect system, where your entire body was used as a motion controller, now how about that? This is certainly worth looking into, and this time around, we have fitness giant Nike work alongside Microsoft in an attempt to usher in a new era of home fitness, calling it “Nike+ Kinect Training”.

“Nike+ Kinect Training” is made available for the Xbox 360, where it boasts Nike trainers who will work alongside some of the company’s top athletes. Basically, “Nike+ Kinect Training” is a custom training program that is rooted in elite Nike fitness, and was specially designed to assist athletes of all levels arrive at their potential without having to brave traffic jams while on their way to the gym, but rather do so right in the comfort of their own homes.

Hmmm, it does make me wonder whether the program itself has enough parameters to develop a truly customized workout for everyone and anyone. I suppose nothing quite beats a human personal trainer at the gym, but the tradeoff would be the amount of money that you would need to fork out by the hour, and I would say many are willing to make a compromise for something that costs far less, and yet offers decent enough fitness returns.

It does not matter what your fitness goal is, “Nike+ Kinect Training” will offer you the right tools in order to help you arrive there. Thanks to the magic and wonder of Kinect, the personal trainers in the experience are able to check out how your body moves, make an assessment of your physical strengths and athleticism, identify areas for improvement, while churning out a personalized workout plan so that you can achieve your personal best. The inclusion of real-time feedback does wonders to ensure positions and movements are correct, which means the “Nike+ Kinect Training” custom program is able to evolve alongside you.

No idea on pricing, but “Nike+ Kinect Training” will arrive as an Xbox 360 exclusive later this holiday season.

Self-Emptying Dehumidifier

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 04:30 AM PDT

The air in your home can get rather dry, depending on which geographical location you are at – not to mention the season which you’re in right now. To make sure that there is just the right amount of moisture in the air so that mold does not grow all over your stuff, and the air does not feel so dank and musty, how about making sure your home has a dehumidifier? For those of us who are still pondering over whether to make that particular purchase, you might want to take a gander at the $299.95 Self-Emptying Dehumidifier – where the name itself gives the game away. Basically, this dehumidifier comes with an integrated pump which will expel condensed water into a wash basin, or if you choose, out a window up to 16 feet away.

This basically does away with your responsibility to empty the water tank, making it the perfect home appliance in basements that do not have floor drains. The pump used is said to be powerful enough to push water up to a basement window, while its tank control system is smart enough to shut the unit off should the hose become obstructed, so that you do not end up with a flooded basement instead. To put it in a nutshell, we are looking at a virtually maintenance-free operation, now how about that?
