The iPhone Lens Dial – for the Serious iPhone 4s Photographer

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 09:23 AM PDT

I admit it, I have a Nikon DSLR and a Sony Cybershot, but somehow I end up taking more pictures on my iPhone. I guess it makes sense since is always available, easy to remember, and takes a pretty good shot, for a phone. But inevitably I will miss quite a few of those perfect pictures, If only I could have been just a little closer… I always walk away kicking myself for not having at least grabbed the Cybershot.

So who could blame me for being intrigued by the iPhone Lens Dial? Not only does this complete 3 lens optical system, made specifically for your iPhone, look cool, but it boasts fisheye, wide angle, and telephoto lens capabilities. The lenses are optical quality coated glass set into an aircraft grade aluminum case with both portrait and landscape tripod mounts.

While the iPhone lens Dial isn’t going to take the place of your DSLR (or your point and shoot for that matter), getting even just a bit closer to your subjects and a few special effects will make iPhone picture taking a whole lot more fun and creative. Simply turn the dial to what you need and it will lock in place, and you can start snapping.

You should be aware that the telephoto lens only provides a 1.5x optical zoom over the unenhanced iPhone lens and it is a bit expensive costing around $249.99. The case, which weighs in at about 10 ounces will also be adding a little bulk to your phone, but better to have and not need, then to need and not have.

QR Codes in Headstones – Dying for Something New?

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 07:28 AM PDT

At one time, it was safe to say that grave markers had remained virtually unchanged for a great many years. They either simply marked an area not to be disturbed or let us know who, and perhaps when the person departed this Earth. I admit that on ocassion, whilst walking through a cemetary I was curious, I would have liked to have known more about the person, or family interred there. I guess I wasn’t the only one.

Well now being dead is no reason to give up your Facebook page. A company in Seattle Washington is creating a brand new type of headstone which connects the living to the dead with QR technology. Their Living Headstone memorials have a digital link embedded in a traditional headstone that takes its users to a Facebook style webpage containing information that you and friends add about your loved ones, such as: an obituary, history, photos, or even comments by friends and relatives, heck, you can even share content via Facebook or Twitter.

These special links can be built into new headstones from the Quiring Company for about 75 bucks or they can be applied as an after market item to existing stones for around $150.00. These codes can also be applied to urns, so cremated dead folks don’t have to miss out on all the fun, and to benches, memorials, and plaques, or anywhere our departed would like to be respectfully remembered.

The price of the Code Links also come with a lifetime subscription to the Living headstone personal webpage… a lifetime subscription? hmm. How does that work? Please visit Monuments.com to watch a video, get more information or have a visit with designers. I’m in! Now I just have to decide… urn, or stone?

Vacuum Brewer

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 06:30 AM PDT

There is nothing quite like a nice cup of coffee for millions around the world to start off their day the right way – and just as there are many different kinds of coffee, so too, are there numerous other ways to make the perfect cuppa. Enter the $89.99 Vacuum Brewer, where it is said to rely on the vacuum brewing principle that has been proven to be exceptionally effective at extracting all the flavor from the coffee grounds, all the while removing the more “chewy” texture of the french press method.

Sounds like an old school method, but you know for sure it is a joy to watch if you are a coffee lover, and let your tongue judge on your behalf when you take the first sip. Some say that delicate coffees which hail from African and Central American will bloom with vacuum brewing, although there is no stopping you from taste testing the range of your favorite beans using this method in order to experience a clean, crisp flavor. It takes around 5 to 11 minutes to brew 4 to 8 cups of coffee.

Illuminated In Pool Barstool

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 06:00 AM PDT

If you are well off enough to own a home that has a pool in it, then surely you would not cringe at the $249.95 asking price for the Illuminated In Pool Barstool. After all, there is nothing quite like the feeling of sipping on a pina colada with your harem, all dressed up, ready and waiting to have a splashing good time. This is one submersible stool which will illuminate, making it the ideal decorative piece for the definitive swim-up bar experience that one would find in more luxurious 5-star resorts.

There is a poolside remote control which will activate the stool’s built-in, waterproof four-color LED array, ensuring the stool itself is illuminated for optimal nighttime mood lighting. The LEDs can be set to flash or fade depending on your mood and preference, and when you hit the pause button during a fade, it will set the color at a gradient between both hues.

You will not find the stool having a mind of its own and floating off somewhere, since it will anchor itself to the pool’s bottom thanks to a filling of water when submerged, not to mention the inclusion of an integrated sand reservoir. Its pedestal is a large screw which will let you adjust the height of the seat from 24″ to 36″, and each of the removable rechargeable battery inside delivers up to a dozen hours of continuous use, taking 8 hours to charge up.

Flyme OS 1.0 arrives for Meizu MX and M9 this June

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 05:30 AM PDT

Have you heard of Meizu before? Well, here is a little history lesson before we continue – Meizu was the first company to come up with their self proclaimed iPhone killer back when Apple first released the iPhone in 2007. Of course, the aesthetics of their smartphone is there for all and sundry to look at, but when you break it down into the overall user experience as well as app ecosystem, there is no way the Meizu offering could live up to expectations as an iPhone killer. Since then, many have come and gone bearing the iPhone killer banner, but none failed to deliver, allowing the iPhone to remain supreme.

Well, this does not mean that Meizu has already thrown in the towel, and they have worked on other smartphones over the years since 2007, with the most recent model being a quad-core processor running in the Meizu MX, which is an update to the previous Meizu MX that had a dual-core processor underneath the hood. As for the operating system of choice, Meizu has decided to stick to Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, except that they have tweaked it until it is known as the Flyme OS. Flyme OS 1.0 will roll out this June for both Meizu MX and M9 smartphones.

Since the Meizu M9 is a relatively older handset, it goes to show just how Meizu is committed towards its old users. Just what does Flyme OS 1.0 deliver? For starters, it is said to offer a powerful range of features and user-friendliness alongside a simple and elegant design, and initial impressions, regardless of whether at home or abroad, have been nothing but high praise. Meizu decided to focus on user experience right from the get go this time around, and I guess it is a way of learning from their past mistakes that great looking hardware alone can only carry a device so far.

You can wait for the OTA (Over The Air) update in June this year, or head on to Meizu’s website for a manual download by then.

Dell Precision tower workstations get redesign

Posted: 24 Apr 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Let’s face the fact that tablets and smartphones these days tend to hog the headlines when it comes to computing devices, and computers are not all that hot anymore. This does not mean that nobody is buying desktops, notebooks and workstations any longer, but rather, the more interesting bits of news and rumors all hail from the smartphone and tablet departments. Dell is having none of that though, rolling out a press release that details their newly redesigned range of Dell Precision tower workstations which are touted to “give creative and design professionals new levels of performance.”

This new line of Precision workstations will come with new patented technology that does away with virtually all memory errors, thereby increasing the reliability of the workstation while maximizing uptime for the user without causing any more additional stress. Not only that, there is an externally removable power supply which is the first and only one of its kind in the industry where a mainstream tower workstation is concerned. The power supply itself is lockable and comes with a built-in handle which will light up in green when working properly. This would definitely come in handy to decrease the amount of downtime spent in detecting and servicing issues.

Front accessible hard drives make it far easier to perform upgrades as well as swapping out hard drives in a jiffy, especially those who are immersed in data intensive fields such as video editing, military and research organizations. You will be able to figure out your very own configuration according to your need thanks to its ability to hold up to a quartet of 3.5-inch hard drives or eight 2.5-inch hard drives.

Not only that, Remote Access will enable the Dell Precision T7600 to convert easily to a rack solution, letting you mount it to virtually any standard Dell PowerEdge server rack. Through the central location of the workstations, businesses are able to maintain a clean and quiet work environment, ensuring that all relevant hardware remains tucked away in a safe place, while offering remote workers access via a Dell Precision FX100 zero client.

The new Dell Precision tower workstation portfolio comprises the Dell Precision T7600, the Dell Precision T5600, the Dell Precision T3600, and the Dell Precision T1650, with one to suit just about any budget.
