Samsung announces Ultra High Speed–1 microSD memory card Posted: 07 Apr 2012 05:00 AM PDT
While this made it extremely easy to tote around, it was also equally easy to lose. Having said that, when it comes to memory cards, there are only a couple of ways to improve on them – that is, to make them larger in terms of capacity, or to increase their speed – or if the manufacturer chooses, do both simultaneously. This is what we will look at today, as Samsung has just announced their Ultra High Speed–1 (UHS-1) microSD memory card. The reason behind Samsung’s mass production of the Ultra High Speed–1 interface microSD memory cards would be to be able to support the highest performance levels that are required on advanced LTE (Long Term Evolution) smartphones and tablets. This spanking new memory card will come with up to 16GB of storage space, and is made up of Samsung's 20 nanometer-class 64 gigabit (Gb) toggle DDR 2.0 devices and an advanced Samsung controller which will support the ultra fast UHS-1 interface. Internal tests have managed to garner some impressive benchmarks, where the new 16GB UHS-1 microSD card was shown to be capable of hitting a maximum sequential read speed of 80 megabytes per second (MB/s), making it four times compared to the read speed of today's advanced microSD cards, where they hover at approximately 21MB/s. Production of this new class of microSD memory cards started late March, so we should see them hit the market soon. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy.
