Spring is Here – Time to Make KettlePizza

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 09:57 AM PDT

We really didn’t have much of a winter this year and daylight savings time is already upon us. It is this time of the year that my thoughts turn to spring and summer. Time spent outdoors, playing golf, basking in the sun and cooking outdoors. I’m always looking for new ways to diversify my barbecue options… one can only eat hot dogs and hamburgers for so long.

Welcome the KettlePizza, this is a stainless steel sleeve designed to make your Weber, or most other kettle style grills into an ideal cooking chamber for making mouthwatering pizzas. The sleeve is sandwiched between the lid and the base of your existing kettle grill and allows cooking at temperatures of over 750 degrees F. Using both charcoal and some hardwood for flavor, you will have real wood-fired pizza oven taste, right in your own backyard.

The KettlePizza can be used in many ways, and although it makes an amazing pizza, using a skillet or a traditional pan you can cook almost anything you’d like, right outside, in your new oven.  Please check out some videos of the KettlePizza in action, Here.

So you can forget about the burnt bottom and uncooked toppings that you had on your last grilled pizza and have some thin-crust crispy goodness this time around. The KettlePizza kit includes a laser machined stainless steel riser sleeve, a hi-temp thermometer, wood handles with stainless hardware and a 14 inch pro pizza pan. It is easy to assemble can be purchased through amazon.com for around 150 bucks (just make sure you get the right size for your existing grill) Let me know when you have yours, I’ll bring the pepperoni!

Move over Spork – Meet the Knork

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 09:25 AM PDT

I have to say I have never really been impressed with the Spork, you remember, that spoon/fork hybrid that was ever so popular at fast food restaurants for a while. They usually came in a bag with flimsy little napkin and some salt and pepper packs. I always ended up using mine as a spoon, the tines on the “fork” never really had enough strength to stab anything. A decent enough idea, just bad execution.

Well, now we get to welcome the Knork, available not only as disposible cutlery, the Knork also comes in stainless steel and is ergonomically designed for the way we eat, the Knork combines the necessity of a fork, with the cutting edge of a knife all in one handy utensil. The gently beveled edge allows you to easily cut your food (with your already perfected rocking maneuver) with much less time and effort than ever before.

I realize that at first glance the Knork may appear to be a novelty, but upon further investigation I realized how valuable it may be to our seniors, or folks with hand and wrist issues, or even for kids simply learning how to eat… I know the whole fork-knife coordination thing was an issue with me when I was a kid. It still is.

The Knorks are 18/0 stainless steel, hand formed from a single solid bar. They are available in glossy, matte or a Duo Finish with a glossy head and frosted handle. Serving pieces and plasticware are also available, and a four piece stainless set goes for just under 25 bucks from amazon.com

And no, I don’t know why they dont slice the corner of your mouth, they just don’t!

Jubilee Solar Queen comes in purple

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 06:30 AM PDT

Long live the queen! Her Majesty The Queen has certainly lasted far longer in office than the numerous US Presidents who have come and gone over the years, offering a symbol of stability as well as that of a regal and wise ruler over her subjects. She is rarely seen without her hat, and she tends to come dressed in a mono-color set up, looking stunning no matter her age. Well, for those who love the color purple, you might be interested in the £14.99 Jubilee Solar Queen that will definitely help adorn your house with a very regal figurine.

This will deliver a touch of majestic splendor within or outside your humble abode. Her Majesty’s royal wave will be non-stop here unlike in real life, as long as there is sufficient solar power to keep her waving. As for the solar panels, they are obviously stashed away on her handbag, so that the rest of her outfit will not look out of place. This purchase is a limited edition figurine that was released to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee that marks 60 years of her reign on the throne.

Scrabble Prestige

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Back in my younger days, a Gold credit card was the bomb – fast forward to today, and that is just an entry level credit card, followed by the Platinum version which is a step up, while the Visa Infinite card is the stuff of dreams that high income earners hope to have in their wallets. Well, I guess the same kind of “upgrade” mentality applies to different items in life as well, with Scrabble Prestige being one of them. This £69.99 take on the beloved classic word boardgame is definitely far more refined than the normal version, which I will explain below.

You can call it – splendiferous, exemplary, extravagant, or lush, there are just so many ways to make good use of your word power with Scrabble Prestige. Coming in a mahogany box, this beautifully-finished set has a rotating game board courtesy of a raised grid, allowing tiles to remain once you have placed them. While you wait to play your turn, the wooden racks is the place for your tiles to lounge upon, while the tile bag comes in velvet for that added touch of royalty.

Supermarket scanner recognizes objects

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:30 AM PDT

Everyone who has been to a supermarket now compared to one 20 or 30 years ago know just how much more efficient life at the checkout line has become thanks to the barcode sticker on all products. I remember that as a kid, the staff at the checkout counter needed to key in the item code itself for the till to register that item as sold, but these days, the “beeps” of such barcode scanners pervade all checkout lines as people rush from one place to another.

Well, Toshiba Tec must have figured out that they have something better up their sleeves – that is, to make obsolete standard barcodes in supermarkets. This laser scanner will not read barcodes, but rather, it is capable of recognizing the merchandise itself, regardless of whether it is fresh produce or packaged goods, thanks to a special algorithm and what I would suppose is a camera of decent performance levels.

Formally known as the Object Recognition Scanner, this laser scanner certainly comes in handy. Toshiba Tec says, “Fruit and vegetables in supermarkets don’t usually have barcodes, because they’re put out while they’re fresh. So these items can’t be read at the register using barcodes, which means staff need to input data to record them. If staff are part-time employees, they may not recognize some items, which can cause delays. We’re developing this new scanner to solve that problem.”

The laser scanner will make use of pattern recognition technology that is being worked on by Toshiba, and this technology is able to tell the difference between merchandise as well as different objects, discarding the latter as noise, without sacrificing on performance since the scanner itself is capable of operating at high speeds. Fresh produce in addition to printed items, the scanner recognizes. All right, apologies for the Yoda reference there, but it is definitely something that is worth looking into if it were to be faster than a standard barcode scanner at the checkout line. More fine tuning work on it is required though as at press time.

Fishing Spirits offers force feedback

Posted: 12 Mar 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Once, video games and real life were separated – you had crazy titles like Centipede or even Pac-Man that had a pie chart wannabe going around a maze, avoiding ghosts at certain times (and turning the tables on them after eating a Power Pill) while chomping up different fruits and pellets, or even Asteroids that required you to help a ship in order to save the earth from destruction. Well, the advent of technology, especially in the graphics department, has certainly advanced the cause of video games, bringing more and more real life scenarios such as racing, boxing, wrestling, basketball, and the super popular war genres.

Fishing is definitely a niche market, as not all guys think that the best thing to do in the world is hanging out somewhere in the middle of the ocean with a rod in tow among good company. However, there are others who feel that they would prefer to be one with the ocean, battling wit against big game that live underwater. Replicating that experience on a game console is not that easy, but it has been done before. The closest I came to in fishing in a video game would be picking up Magikarp in Pokemon. Namco Bandai Games has come up with Fishing Spirits, an arcade fishing medal game that supports up to 8 players, as well as supporting force feedback controllers. We shall look in further detail about Fishing Spirits after the jump.

This unique title will hit arcades in Japan from July this year, and it is said to be radically different compared to previous medal games. This is said to be a totally new genre by itself, and Namco Bandai hopes that it will make you feel as though you were really fishing in the first place right from the moment you sit down. The game itself will feature a couple of 55″ displays for a truly stunning experience, and there are more than 50 kinds of fish which are large and small, swimming around the display. The new fishing rod shaped controller is equipped with vibration and reaction motors, delivering much needed tactile feedback to the player. Ah well, at least there are no sprays around the machine to keep you wet when the virtual fish struggles.

May the best fisherman win!
