Nokia’s nanotechnology helps future phones remain dry

Have you ever noticed drops of water that falls onto most leaves? That drop will not hang around there (unless the leaf is formed in such a way that the water cannot subject itself to the law of gravity and flow down to the ground, but remains as a puddle), which means the leaf itself is water repellant. Boffins over at the Nokia Research Center in Cambridge have reason to optimistically believe that they might just be able to replicate a similar effect on your phone, thanks to the wonders of nanotechnology.

According to Chris Bower, the Principal Scientist at the NRC in Cambridge, "Like many scientists we are trying to copy what nature has been doing perfectly for thousands of years." Just how are they going to achieve this vision? For starters, the team at NRC are currently in the last stages of working out a Superhydrophobic coating that will be applied to the outside of a smartphone.

Does this mean we will eventually end up with waterproof handsets being the norm? Not really, as if you submerge a phone without all of its holes and openings sealed against water, it will still go inside and wreak havoc on the electronics. However, assuming it rains and you cannot find a shelter anytime soon, at least all the rain water will run off your phone, at least leaving only you wet.

I guess the experience is somewhat similar to those using a Teflon non-stick frying pan, where it has a hydrophobic coating, but we are talking about a superhydrophobic coating here that adds a nanostructure to trap a layer of air over the surface, making sure that not a single drop of water will ever reach it. Chris Bower proceeded to demonstrate this breakthrough by using a couple of hand-held Nokia maze tiles, where after dropping water on a surface that has no coating at all, says, "The water spreads, like this, and coats the surface." When repeated with the maze of ordinary hydrophobic coating, the water will retain its form, allowing you to guide it. As for the maze with a superhydrophobic coating, the water drops and nearly bounces up, beading tightly together – followed by a quick skid over the surface.

LG Optimus L3 to arrive in Europe this month

The recently concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, did see a fair number of smartphones unveiled for the masses, and it would be interesting to see how the smartphone landscape will play out in due time when all the different players release their products onto the market. LG, a staunch supporter of the Android operating system, they decided to launch a trio of smartphones from the L-Style line – and the Optimus L3 would be the first model from this particular range, so let us take a closer look at it.

Arriving in Europe later this month, the LG Optimus L3 will deliver an authentic experience that brings together both style and practical technologies into a single package. L-Style's elements, including Modern Square Style and Harmonized Design Contrast with metallic accents, and you can be sure even if this smartphone falls under the budget market, it is not going to look the part.

Sporting a 3.2″ display that delivers enough visual space for a smartphone of its size, the Optimus L3 comes with a longer talk time in order to live up to its reputation as an "on-the-go" socializing device, where its 1,500mAh battery ought to do the trick. Customers are even able to choose between white, black, hot pink or blue shades, depending on their preference. According to Dr. Jongseok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company, "We've always believed in the need to offer a variety of smartphone options and many people simply don't want to pay for a lot of extra bells and whistles. We think the Optimus L3 offers all of basic smartphone-related benefits but in a more premium package that hasn't been seen before on a smartphone in this category."

Once it arrives in Europe, the LG Optimus L3 will then continue its march across Russia and Asia, with the other worldwide markets to follow thereafter. Just to refresh your memory, the LG Optimus L3 will be powered by an 800MHz processor, featuring 1GB of internal memory, 384MB RAM, a 3.2″ QVGA touchscreen display, a 3-megapixel camera at the back, and running on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. I am not sure whether Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is in the works for this puppy or not though.

Those of us who live in developed countries know just how easy it is to access clean drinking water, but spare a thought for the many millions who do not have access to basic amenities. If you are still running scared of catching some sort of bug in your drinking water, then here is a suggestion for all paranoid Androids – the £32.99 Bobble Jug that will come in black, blue, pink and green shades. All you need to do is fill up the jug from a tap, and then pour out that refreshing cup of fresh water. The activated carbon filter is said to make short work of the odor as well as chlorine from the tap water, allowing you to savor each and every single drop that goes through your mouth after that.

Each carbon filter is capable of filtering through up to 150 litres of clean water, and since the Bobble Jug is made out of recycled PET, you know for sure that you are doing your bit for the environment. Bear in mind that the filtering process begins when water is being poured into the jug itself, so you can always remove the cover after that when you place the Bobble Jug on the dining table. The Bobble Jug can hold up to approximately 2 liters of life giving water.

The galaxy is said to comprise of millions of stars, and Samsung has managed to master the technique of miniaturization with their latest smartphone release, the Samsung Galaxy Pocket. This device measures a mere 11.98mm slim, and will tip the scales at 97 grams. For those who are so used to large screen sizes on their portable devices, the Samsung Galaxy Pocket can be said to take a few steps back (if only to maintain its tiny size, of course), featuring a 2.8" display. Samsung has not forgotten about the user interface experience though, upgrading their TouchWiz user interface that delivers a smoother menu navigation via easy-to-access widgets, delivering easy shortcuts to frequently-used functions.

Text input has also been improved for speedier, more accurate typing and messaging. There is 3GB of internal memory available for you to stash away your applications, MP3 files, photos and other media, while the integrated FM radio lets you tune in to your favorite station. Connectivity options include high-speed Wi-Fi and HSDPA 3.6. No idea on pricing or availability as at press time though.
