Elgato HDHomeRun PRIME App for iPad 2

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 06:06 AM PDT

Elgato has just released the HDHomeRun PRIME App for iPad 2 over at the App Store, where it will play nice with the Silicondust HDHomeRun PRIME line of CableCard-enabled network tuners. To put it in a nutshell, this new app will allow users to stream and record live premium cable TV directly to the iPad 2 – making Apple’s hot selling tablet all the more desirable now.

It does not matter whether you want to watch the news in the kitchen when you are preparing dinner for a hungry family, or perhaps indulge in a little bit of baseball on the patio on a warm evening, or even have a stab at a late night horror show without having to disturb anyone from their slumber. The HDHomeRun PRIME App will pave the way for you to view and record live cable TV anywhere – as long as you remain within the vicinity of your home's Wi-Fi network.

Elgato's HDHomeRun App and Silicondust HDHomeRun PRIME together intend to deliver premium television and DVR capabilities to the iPad 2. First of all, the HDHomeRun PRIME device will send the TV signal directly to the HDHomeRun PRIME App, so you can save even more electricity since there isn’t any need to fire up a computer. Apart from that, the HDHomeRun PRIME App will enable you to record programs straight to your iPad 2, providing the option to transfer those recordings from the iPad 2 to a Mac or PC later on.

To put it in a nutshell, Elgato's latest solution will stream cable TV "copy freely" channels to the iPad 2, and users who rock with Verizon FiOS or Comcast cable television will have the upper hand since most of channels from these providers are already sent with a 'copy freely' flag.

The HDHomeRun PRIME App won’t be free though considering what it can do – you can pick it up for the introductory price of $17.99 from the App Store, while the HDHomeRun PRIME can be yours for $249.99.

Sony digital binoculars are a world’s first

Posted: 21 Aug 2011 05:37 AM PDT

Sony intends to introduce far more interesting optical device than your usual digital camera with the first pair of digital binoculars in the world. Yes sir, we are talking about the DEV-3 and DEV-5 models that will be able to record all that you see in the AVCHD 2.0 format, making them the perfect tools for nature/bird watching. Not only that, these videos that you record are stored in Full HD resolution and stereo sound for added effect, and if you so desire to make things all the more interesting, there is even a 3D mode which will record scenes as thrilling stereoscopic video footage – just make sure you have a compatible 3D HDTV for the playback.

You will be able to choose the variable zoom on both models in order to scan a wide area at low magnification before you zoom in seamlessly to pinpoint a subject, ranging from birds in a field to some other forms of wildlife on your next safari adventure. You can turn on the digital zoom at magnification settings of over 10x, but of course with digital zoom on, you make a sacrifice in terms of image quality.

If conventional binoculars could talk, they would definitely turn green with envy when they lay eyes (or should I say, lenses) on the DEV-3 and DEV-5. The former will be able to pull wildlife, sporting subjects and architectural details closer thanks to a maximum magnification of 10x optical, while when you’re set to 3D mode, it boasts of a maximum magnification of 5.4x optical.

Electronic autofocus will help keep moving subjects sharply in focus at all times unlike conventional binoculars, and Sony knows that you place ease of use at the top of your list, hence throwing in a comfortably positioned dial that delivers fingertip adjustment of manual focus. Not only that, with electronic autofocus, it will let you focus cleanly on subjects that are less than 0.5″ away when recording in 2D (minimum of 32″ is required, however, when recording in 3D).

The DEV-3 and DEV-5 digital binoculars will also boast Optical SteadyShot image stabilization (Active mode), similar to the kind of optical stabilization system that you find in most of the other Handycam camcorders and Cyber-shot cameras from Sony. Oh yeah, they even sport an HDMI port for you to output your video/photos onto a compatible 3D HDTV.

The new DEV-3 and DEV-5 digital recordable binoculars will hit the market this coming November, retailing for around $1,400 and $2,000, respectively. Any takers?
