Osaka Station has projected images on a waterfall Posted: 14 Sep 2011 11:07 AM PDT What you are seeing here is a water display at Osaka station in Japan. You can see it in the photo that images are displayed on it. I suggest you go to the video to see how it really works. I was hoping that the images and words that you see in the photo to the left were stable, but they are not. For some reason, anything projected here has be cascading like the water falling. It uses special computer-controlled nozzles to create this effect, and the effect is very exciting to children. I can see my own kids having a blast watching something like this. I can’t help but wonder why the images can’t be more stable on these. It would be awesome to see a television show projected on water. Heck, I would love to have a waterfall TV in my living room. I’m guessing the resolution would be pretty low, and I would only see black and white images. I’m guessing that Osaka Station isn’t the last place where you will see something like this. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t several of these displays in shopping malls and other public areas throughout the world. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Russian Arm responsible for your favorite car chase scenes Posted: 14 Sep 2011 10:35 AM PDT If you like movies with car chases as much as I do, then you should know the invisible star of them is the Russian Arm. The Russian Arm looks like a tank with a gun with two swivels. It is a gyroscopically-stablized camera crane that is responsible for action shots in car chase scenes like Transformers, The Fast and The Furious, and others. The crane of the Russian Arm is designed to keep steady while its SUV mount is moving at high speeds, even if the pavement is uneven. It can even go off-road. The Russian Arm was developed by Filmotechnic, which was begun by the Oscar-winning Anatoliy Kokush. As you might have guessed, the Russian Arm can swing freely around the vehicle, which can make for some pretty cool sweeping shots. It can go about a foot off the ground, or as high as 14 feet above it. The camera head can also pan 360 degrees in about six seconds, tilt along a 200 degree axis, and roll along a 270 degree axis. The Russian Arm is operated via joystick, and the film’s director communicates with the crew with an iCom system. Images from the camera can be displayed on eight monitors inside. The next time you watch a film with a car chase scene, watch for the use of the Russian Arm. I know I’m going to watch The Fast and the Furious again just so I can find Russian Arm shots. Texas cops get the first police gyroplane Posted: 14 Sep 2011 09:55 AM PDT If you are ever speeding in Tromball, Texas, don’t be surprised if you look up and see this vehicle on your tail. Tromball is the first American city to own the first police gyroplane. This type of technology has been around for a while, and the Auto-Gyro MTOsport is cheaper than the average helicopter. This costs $75,000, while a helicopter costs $1.4 million. The MTOsport has a rotax motor which allows pilots to descend quickly, and its top speed is 115 miles per hour. Too bad it is not very good in bad weather or at night. I don’t know about you, but I am seeing huge potential for a new series here. It will be called Flying Cops, and I’m going to pitch it with this line: “It’s like CHiPs, but in the air”. The show would start out with two macho cops getting into the MTOsport, and chasing down a bad guy. Que the action theme music here! I would imagine if the Tromball gyroplane works well to take a bite out of crime in its town, then we could be seeing gyroplanes popping up in towns all across the nation. You had better keep your eyes to the skies, bad guys! Remind me to use that on the pilot episode for my Flying Cops show. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Hyperkin PS3 Wireless Remote Controller arrives on Amazon Posted: 14 Sep 2011 06:30 AM PDT Are you an avid gamer who feels that your gaming funk has been held back simply because you lack of the relevant hardware that will help you fulfill your potential in front of the LED TV and console? Well, assuming you are rocking to the Sony PS3 and want something to improve your game, the Hyperkin PS3 Wireless Remote Controller, sad to say, is not it – it is not meant to help you gain more frags and put ph33r into your opponents, but rather, this device will target folks who have decided to make their PS3 as their home’s central entertainment hub. Available at Amazon, the Hyperkin PS3 Wireless Remote Controller is capable of offering you the entire range of functions such as a QWERTY keypad for quick and easy input, alongside total DVD/Blu-ray control to make sure you will be able to access parts of the disc far faster than using the standard SixAxis controller that comes bundled with the PS3. Also known as the Remotext, this wireless remote controller was specially designed for the PS3 (which you should be able to tell by now), where it will be able to let you text other players on the Playstation Network in unprecedented speed. I suppose those who use phones with physical QWERTY keyboards can attest to the accuracy of such a device in getting the message across, instead of relying on a virtual keyboard that more often than not, takes far longer for you to compose your message to the recipient. Whenever you aren’t shooting off an email or message, the dual analog sticks and buttons will come to good use as you enjoy your latest PS3 games without having to swap controllers. It has a rechargeable battery inside, and can be connected to the PS3 via USB to keep it juiced up. Would you pay $34.99 for added convenience in your living room? Logitech Wireless Touchpad severs cable connection Posted: 14 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT I would say that when we talk about the 21st century as well as towards the end of the 1990s, many people were optimistic that we would soon move into a true blue wireless and paperless age, but judging by what I see at the moment, it seems as though that is not going to happen anytime soon. Why, you ask? Well, paper is still an indispensable part of life, and it is far easier to access something you’ve written on a note than to pull out your notebook or smartphone, turn it on, and boot up a particular note taking program. As for going wireless, that is far more practical – although it has not really caught on as I originally thought it would. Logitech intends to push the wireless envelope with their latest product, the $49.99 Logitech Wireless Touchpad. Yup, the introduction of touchpads on notebooks, netbooks and even an optical trackpad on a smartphone did open up a whole new way of interacting with the digital world. Let’s see what Logitech has in store for us with their Logitech Wireless Touchpad after the jump. This device was specially designed to work with the Windows 7 operating system, where it will boast multi-touch navigation and gesture-based controls, making it a whole lot easier to point, scroll and swipe your way to an intended file or shortcut, where even surfing the Internet now is so much easier to do. Since this device comes with a large touch surface, it ought to deliver a fair amount of room for your fingertips to stretch in they very own way without getting cramped, especially after spending the whole day in front of the computer. Setting it up is a snap – just plug the diminutive Logitech Unifying receiver into a USB port, place the touchpad at an area where you’re comfortable with, and you’re good to go. The included receiver is able to simultaneously supports up to five more compatible devices. Rotating Targets Infrared Shooting Gallery Posted: 14 Sep 2011 05:30 AM PDT Feel that you have it in you to be a Top Shot winner, but never really made it to the show, let alone applied? You can either get some practice in even when you no longer have money to purchase bullets – that is easily done with the Rotating Targets Infrared Shooting Gallery. Yes sir, this shooting gallery will definitely challenge players to quickly hit three rotating targets – all using a harmless infrared gun. There will be three two-sided targets that rotate randomly on an infrared-sensing base, where they will reveal themselves to either be an image of a wolf, bear, or mountain lion, while a fellow hunter is imprinted on the reverse of each. I’m quite sure you know the drill by now – take that precious minute given to you to down as many prey as possible with the infrared gun, while trying to avoid your fellow hunters (although when you think of them as outlaws, everything else is fair game). A “reloading” sound will play back whenever you pump the infrared gun to add to the realism level, and there are three modes of play to choose from. You will need a mixture of AA and AAA batteries to get the entire setup going, so we would recommend rechargeables. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Baby Plus Prenatal-Education System Posted: 14 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT Talk about competitive! If you think that the modern world has somehow forgot to stop and smell the roses, then you are probably correct. After all, why bother cramming more knowledge down the brains of our poor children when they are meant to explore the world in a sense of wonder? Now with devices like this £99.99 Baby Plus Prenatal-Education System, it seems that the game of one up-manship is set to continue – where learning takes place in the womb before baby draws his/her first breath of oxygen. This particular device is said to have the necessary scientific backing to prove its effectiveness, claiming that babies are most receptive when they’re still in the womb. So all mums-to-be need to do is sit down, relax with a cup of tea, and place this prenatal teaching tool to their baby bump. It will emit the familiar and comforting sounds of mum's heartbeat, changing the rhythm gradually over time to become more complex.
