Jell-O’s “Pudding Face” Billboard appears in Manhattan Posted: 08 Aug 2011 09:34 AM PDT What started as a website on Jell-O has apparently become a phenomenon. Well, perhaps “phenomenon” is too strong a word. The concept behind this face is that it will frown or smile, depending what the general mood is on Twitter. I would imagine it is a “simple” effect to do on a digital website, but it has been taken to a whole new level with this billboard at Manhattan. This is without a doubt one of the weirdest ad campaigns that I have seen. It is also one of the creepiest. If I was a little kid, I’m pretty certain that this would scare me, and I am not certain why. Especially if I saw it turn from a smile to a frown right in front of me. Perhaps it is the “Big Brother is watching you” resemblance. I think the face reminds me of Bill Hader from Saturday Night Live or Dwight from “The Office”. I have heard that people are talking about how the economy is going down, and the other day, I heard someone use the D-word. If we are in this depression, then I would imagine that Jello Pudding Face will be wearing a frown. I would then imagine that the billboard would have to be taken down, or its downer face will encourage a bad association with Jell-O pudding, worse than Bill Cosby. Forget space shuttles, Boeing and Lockheed Martin have their own space capsule plans Posted: 08 Aug 2011 08:15 AM PDT For those who are still getting over the final space shuttle missions, please know that there is more than one way to get people into space. What you are seeing here is Boeing’s Crew Space Transportation vehicle, the CST-100. It was unveiled a year ago, and Boeing plans to test them in 2015 atop an Atlas V rocket. There will actually three tests. The first will be a simple test, followed by a test that set to deliberately fail in order to test out the capsule abort system. The third mission will be a manned mission, to the International Space Station. As I mentioned in the title, Lockheed Martin is working on a space capsule of their own. In fact, both Boeing and Lockheed Martin are working with an organization called the United Space Alliance, a contract that NASA has launched since they are now working with a Commercial Crew Development program. I wonder if we will ever discover a way to shoot these capsules from a cannon, slingshot, or some other way that doesn’t involve giant tubes of fuel. If you want to be involved in the Capsule’s first man mission, I heard that Boeing is looking for people to occupy these capsules. Magnetic Light Switch Cover is one way not to lose your keys Posted: 08 Aug 2011 08:00 AM PDT Magnetic Light Switch Cover is proof that the simplest of ideas are the best ones. I’m sure all of us have lost our keys before, so why not have a magnetic light switch cover to stick them to the moment we enter our dark dwelling after unlocking the door? That is the idea of Jake Frey, a third-year student of industrial design at Philadelphia University. This light switch has a high-powered magnet on the back of the base plate. I wonder if this is an electromagnet, wired in with the same wires that are attached to the switch. I’m guessing no, but I could be wrong. Leave a comment if you know if this light switch cover is a stand-alone magnet. I suppose that you could use a hook or a small shelf below the light switch to securely put your keys next to the light switch. That, and you don’t have to worry about leaving a scuff mark, not to mention people with pacemakers entering your home. The Magnetic Switch Cover costs about $24.95 at TheFancy, and it looks like it comes in the traditional red and silver colors of U-shaped magnets. If you want another way of not losing your keys, you might want to try the easy2pick, it is available at the X-treme Geek site for the exact same price. Sprint delivers the Samsung Conquer 4G Posted: 08 Aug 2011 06:30 AM PDT Are you rocking on to 4G/LTE devices? If you haven’t done so already, then maybe you might want to give Sprint a chance. After all, they will be rolling out the Samsung Conquer 4G this coming August 21st. Just what does the Conquer 4G bring to the table? How about Android 2.3 Gingerbread as the operating system right out of the box, where this means you need not wait for an update. Apart from that, the Conquer 4G will also have a 1GHz processor running in the background to get things done, with a couple of cameras to help you out with video calls as well as the main camera. More concerning the specifications are available after the jump. There is another thing that makes the Samsung Conquer 4G so special – it will be the first 4G smartphone from Sprint which will cost less than a hundred bucks. Yup, you get that right, it will no longer cost $200 thereabouts to bring home a 4G device. That certainly took a long time in coming, where Sprint has already released 24 4G-capable devices to date. A 3.5″ touchscreen display isn’t the biggest around, but then again it gets the job done. The 1.3-megapixel front facing camera is perfect for video chats, while there is also a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera complete with flash and zoom. Need to connect whenever there is no 4G connection at all? No worries, as it works just fine with a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n chipset, alongside being GPS capable. To make sure you won’t run out of storage space, Samsung has decided to include a microSD memory card slot that is capable of stashing away up to 32GB of storage space – and Sprint’s generous enough to throw in a 2GB microSD memory card to get you started right out of the box. Being 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capable, it is capable of supporting up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices – on both the Sprint 3G or 4G networks. If you’re going to go wireless, you might as well go all the way – and Samsung’s gone ahead by including stereo Bluetooth wireless technology so that you can enjoy hands-free conversation while you’re behind the wheel. Not only that, Sprint ID has been included, letting you enjoy a variety of apps, widgets, shortcuts, ringtones and wallpapers that were specially designed to meet users' specific mobile needs and interests using but a few simple clicks. Ghostbusters trap replica from the movie Posted: 08 Aug 2011 05:30 AM PDT Remember the Ghostbusters movie that came out in the first half of the 1980s? Well, that certainly kicked off quite a storm, where a cartoon series followed thereafter, not to mention a mountain of merchandise being introduced to the market as kids went nuts with Slimer and gang. Well, for folks who still cannot get enough of Ghostbusters more than two and a half decades down the road, perhaps this replica from Mattel might pique your interest – it is a new Ghostbusters ghost trap replica that was inspired by the 1984 movie, where it will hit the market this October for $135 a pop. Sure, it is not going to capture Aunt Petunia’s roving spirit when you open it, but at least it comes in two modes to make it look all the more realistic. The doors will open when you step on the attached pedal, where the array of status and indicator lights will blink to let you know that you have snagged yourself a ghost. When you switch the same trap to ‘Movie’ mode, it will do something similar, albeit with more aplomb. For starters, the light show is more animated and there are extra sound effects whenever the trap’s doors close. Heck, it will even offer vibrating feedback to make it seem all the more real. Something for this Halloween, perhaps? Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. [ Ghostbusters trap replica from the movie copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] Related Posts: |
Posted: 08 Aug 2011 05:00 AM PDT An alarm clock is an alarm clock, right? Apparently not – and to call something the Omnipotent Alarm Clock might be a little bit pretentious, don’t you think so? Let us see whether this device is capable of living up to its name. For starters, the basic function would be to wake you up no matter the cost, so it had better be armed well enough to deliver as promised. If you think that your smartphone’s alarm clock gets the job done, the Omnipotent Alarm Clock does many times better. It has 21 alarms (beat that!) with 20 radio preset stations just in case you need some variety during your everyday morning wake up call. Apart from that, you can even adjust the snooze interval – perfect, as there is a little bit of something for everybody else. The clock itself boasts 14 alarms that can be set to go off at two different times each day, making it a ‘one size fits all’ solution – that is, so that folks with different morning schedules can rely on a single device. If you choose, you can always link your alarm to a preset AM/FM radio station or a buzzer, so that the person will be able to wake up to his/her preferred sound. As for the snooze button, it offers anywhere from one to 30 minutes of extended sleep, where the snooze duration can even be set to automatically reduce by 50% each time the button is pressed – so that stubborn sleepers will rise. Touted to ship from August 18th onwards, the Omnipotent Alarm Clock can be yours for $59.95.
