Hands on with the Jabra Freeway Hand’s Free Virtual Assistant Posted: 17 Jun 2011 04:12 PM PDT On a recent trip to San Francisco, I misplaced by Bluetooth headset. Fortunately, I had something Bluetooth waiting for me when I got back, with the Jabra FREEWAY Speakerphone. We have reported on the initial release of the FREEWAY back in March, and even though it has a clip for the car visor, it can also work on the desk as well. I found that it instantly recognized my Bluetooth-enabled smartphone within mere seconds of being powered on. Having the three speakers with virtual surround sound was also handy, not to mention it announcing the name of the incoming caller. The ability to have it answered by me saying “Answer” is another added bonus. Other features included the 14 hours of talk time and 40 days of standby. It is also good for A2DP streaming for playing of music, podcasts, and GPS directions. Another great feature is that it can link up with two Bluetooth devices at the same time. According to the official web site, the Jabra Freeway is exclusively available at Amazon.com. The price is about $124.94, which might seem like a high price to some, but it is a good price for a Bluetooth speaker of this quality in my opinion. In short, I recommend the product. Deep Shot is good for computer-to-phone transfers, and vice versa Posted: 17 Jun 2011 03:23 PM PDT Even though our computer and smartphones make our world easier to live in, it can be a pain to transfer the information back and forth. Fortunately, Tsung-Hsiang Chang, an MIT Grad student and Google Inern, and Yang Li (also employed by Google) have created Deep Shot. Imagine doing something on your computer, like driving directions. Instead of going to the Navigation App on your smartphone and retyping everything again, you can just take a picture of the screen, and what was on the PC will be on your phone. The reverse of this also works as well. So if you are doing something on your mobile phone and you want to type it up on your computer, just Deep Shot it from the mobile to the PC. You can watch a video of it after the jump for more information. This would be good if you don’t have to go through the rigamarole of entering in your password every time you do a transfer. By the way, isn’t there a service known as Chrome to Phone that does the same thing? Leave a comment if you know the answer. Whatever this case, I would like to have Deep Shot on my computer and smartphone right now. Google, if you can hear me (and I know that you can), please get Deep Shot into some sort of App form, please. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. R2-D2 Planetarium shows where the Death Star is Posted: 17 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT There is something about Star Wars that makes you want to put its iconic images from on Planetariums. There was that the Death Star planetarium that we reported about one year ago, and now there is R2D2. Just to let you know, you aren’t going to see any holographic images of a galaxy far, far away from a long time ago. In fact, the 2-D projector is mounted on the top of his head, and not that nose-like projector on the side of his dome-shaped head. You won’t be hearing any princesses talking about how you are their only hope. The R2D2 Planetarium displays about 10,000 stars, but I am not certain how accurate the display truly is. In fact, it shows something that won’t appear on any star charts: the Death Star. Yes, it is the original, fully-formed one from the first movie. You will notice the lack of planets surrounding it. Not included in this R2 unit is the plans for how to destroy the deadly space station. However, if you take some fighters down into the trench in the middle, you should probably just shoot the exhaust port at the end. Yes, I don’t know why the Death Star designers left in an obvious Achilles heel in their plans, nor why there is a big trench leading right up to it. To me, that is a greater mystery than The Force itself. This particular astrodroid is available from Sega Toys in Japan for a price of about $85. It should adorn the rooms of Star Wars geeks everywhere. Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Wattbike helps you keep in shape Posted: 17 Jun 2011 10:09 AM PDT So you have been trying to keep to your word of staying in shape after all the feasting, but failed to due to the lack of discipline (not to mention the place you live in actually has some pretty good stuff to munch on round the clock). Apart from getting a gym membership (that will gather dust after a while), there are other ways to shed those pounds – how about getting some form of exercise machine in your home? This is what the Wattbike is all about, being an innovative indoor cycle trainer. This is actually one of the world’s first affordable indoor bikes which will accurately measure power (Watts). Watt computers are there for a reason – they enable athletes to instantly see how much power (Watts) they are producing compared to just measuring one’s heart rate after a certain amount of time spent on the hamster wheel…sorry, treadmill. This is actually the first indoor bike that has ever been endorsed by British Cycling, and it sees widespread action by UK and European elite athletes, sports bodies and professional sports teams as being part of their preferred high performance cycle training device. Meant to replicate the sensation of 'real' cycling, while delivering accurate, repeatable and comparable results. Basically, they enable the user to train harder within a shorter period of time simply because they enable each session to be tailored to a specific intensity and training goal, doing away with any down time which outdoor riders would encounter in the real world. With a Wattbike, you are able to analyze and fine tune your cycling technique, monitor and record key performance parameters in real-time at an unprecedented level of accuracy. Best of all is, working on this feels like an actual bicycle, boasting air and magnetic braking systems that enable you to replicate any desired training session, ranging from low intensity recovery riding to maximal intensity sprints. Get this if you want to look buff – just make sure you have the discipline to follow up on your commitment though. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. OtterBox protects Motorola XOOM with its new cover Posted: 17 Jun 2011 09:48 AM PDT
The outer layer comprises of a durable silicone skin which has been enhanced with patented "honeycomb" coring, making it specially designed for increased impact resistance. It has an inner layer that comprises of a hi-impact polycarbonate shell that has been lined with memory foam in order to cushion the XOOM from any knocks and drops. To know more about the OtterBox Defender for the Motorola XOOM, read on after the jump. There is also a removable polycarbonate screen shield that delivers an impenetrable level of protection (reasonably speaking, of course), where it will also double up as a display stand with a couple of viewing angles. You can always make use of one angle while typing notes during a meeting, and the other angle will see action when watching videos while you’re on a trans-Atlantic flight (or any other flight, for that matter). OtterBox Founder and CEO Curt Richardson is proud to claim, "No other case can withstand the same degree of rough treatment. The Defender Series provides superior protection but also allows complete interaction with the tablet." Silicone plugs will ensure the cover the charge, micro USB and HDMI ports in addition to the headphone jack and microSD memory card slot/SIM tray, helping make sure that dirt and dust will remain where it belongs – outside. Even the volume keys are covered by silicone to make sure they are protected. As for the microphones, sensors, camera and flash, these will obviously remain exposed for full functionality. Bear in mind that this isn’t water resistant in any way, but it sure is tough as nails to get the job done, brushing off scratches and knocks without batting an eyelid.
