This ride gets more thrilling as you get more scared

Posted: 13 May 2011 02:44 PM PDT

So what is it that we are looking at here, some sort of swing that doubles as a torturing device?

You are close. Imagine if there was a thrill-park ride that got more thrilling as you were thrilled. I realize that there was way too many variations of the word “thrill” in that last sentence, but here is what people at Nottingham University are attempting:

These rides are essentially controlled by “bio-feedback” through a medical sensor attached to the rider. If the rider’s breathing gets faster, then the ride will go faster. If the rider can somehow control his or her breathing, then he or she will have one steady ride.

So if you are riding one of those bucking broncos, the mechanical device would speed up its game as you got more scared. The same thing applies to the swing ride, which is what I am seeing in the photo, I assume. I’m guessing the biofeedback readers are in that gas mask contraption.

In all honesty, the idea of amusement park rides that get scarier as you get more scared sounds like something from a nightmare. Are these devices meant to be used as a way of finding controlled relaxation? Whatever it is, it seems a little extreme. When I say extreme, I mean like extreme sports. Maybe that should be the target audience of these devices.

Japanese Researchers working on this Aero Train

Posted: 13 May 2011 01:59 PM PDT

I always liked how those maglev trains can hover on the tracks, and Japanese Researchers are working on another type of floating train with this prototype that you see here.

I realize that this prototype looks more like a plane than a train, but this uses air and several plane wings in order to levitate like it does.

You can watch the video of how it hovers after the jump. You will note that it does tend to drag a bit.

I believe that the plan is to create an “Aero Train” that can travel at speeds of 124 miles per hour, which is just a wee bit slower than bullet trains. It has to travel in a U-shaped concrete channel. I am guessing that someone will need to put up a fence around the concrete channel so that people do not fall in. After all, I don’t know how good the brakes are on this train.

For now, the prototype was presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics, but I can see the future could possibly be bright for this particular train. By the way, is this really a train, per se? I mean, it doesn’t look like you could drag a bunch of cars behind this, unless they could hover too.

Switchblade Boomerang gets your superhero career started

Posted: 13 May 2011 08:08 AM PDT

If you were to be a superhero, I am quite sure most of you would already pick latent abilities such as being a mutant or celestial being, instead of the Batman type who is just a masked crusader with plenty of money stashed away while aided by mad martial arts skills and a bunch of gadgets that would make James Bond turn green with envy. However, I don’t think that Batman’s arsenal of weapons are not complete until he has the Switchblade Boomerang.

You might just beat Bruce Wayne to one of these puppies though by placing an early pre-order, with shipping expected to commence this coming June 2nd. The Switchblade Boomerang will retail for £12.99, where it helps you kick start your crime fighting career as it is made from three spongy, spring-loaded blades, and is highly portable since it can fold up and slide easily into a pocket, bag, or utility belt.

In ideal situations, just press the central button and watch the three foam blades fling out and lock in place. Throwing the Switchblade will see it return to you in an arc, but a little bit of practice is always recommended if you do not want to fumble in public.

wEASEL Smartphone Stand

Posted: 13 May 2011 08:00 AM PDT

While I was at CTIA 2011 in Orlando about a month ago, I stopped by the wEASEL booth. As you can probably tell by the weird capitalization, this was not a booth with weasels.

The wEASEL is a handy device that affixes to the back of a smartphone with an included 3M adhesive rectangular pad. It has a kickstand on the back which is good for propping up whatever phone you have in both landscape and the portrait mode that you see in the photo to the left.

You can also see the plastic circular thing on the back of it, which can retract into the wEASEL like those pull-out handles on roll away luggage. The purpose of the loop is so it can be hung on this circular hook that also affixes to a car dash or wall with adhesive.

In short, the device can stand, lean, hang, and be secure while holding if the user puts his or her finger through the aforementioned loop. Not only does this insure that you don’t drop it, but it makes it easier to retrieve from one’s breast or pants pocket.

If you want to check out this wEASEL for yourself, then feel free to order it on the official site here for a price of $24.95.

Cell Phone To Home Phone Redirector

Posted: 13 May 2011 07:44 AM PDT

How many of you no longer have a landline, and hence, a home number for others to reach you? Surely there would be a fair amount, but what about those who do own both a landline and a cell phone? Why, here is the perfect device to bridge both the old and the new in the form of the Cell Phone To Home Phone Redirector. The name more or less explains its position – it is a device that can redirect calls made to a cell phone directly to a home phone handset.

It takes less than a minute to set the entire shebang in your abode, where you will plug it into an existing home telephone while pairing it with a cell phone through Bluetooth connectivity. All incoming calls will then be sent straight to a home home up via the device, as long as it remains within a 30 foot radius.

This works great for folks who prefer the comfort and familiarity of a home phone handset, or for others who have already done away with a landline service but still want to make use of the physical home phone instead of trashing it. The device can be paired up to a couple of cell phones, and for $59.95 a pop, it might just be what dad is looking for this Father’s Day!

IASUS Headset solution targets smartphone conferencing

Posted: 13 May 2011 07:31 AM PDT

IASUS – a company that you should not confuse with Asus of Taiwan (strange how adding an ‘i’ prefix changes everything and yet makes things feel so familiar) has just announced that they have a headset solution for those who want to hold smartphone conferences, relying on a design that is inspired by Secret Service headsets. Known as the 500K, this is touted to be the ultimate conference call headset – but will it be able to live up to its billing?

We won’t really know unless we take the 500K Headset out for a spin, as it delivers ultimate comfort, clarity, and reliability, while setting a new performance standard for mobile headset communication. After all, today’s business professionals tend to live an extremely connected life – where hours on end can be spent on conference calls as well as VoIP web conferences.

These communications power users will certainly be less efficient with conventional headsets, as those tend to result in discomfort, pain, and mechanical overheating in the ear. As for wireless headsets, those tend to suffer from dropped signals and a short battery life. Good thing IASUS intends to show the world just what they can do with the 500K, where it has certainly gone through a whole lot of thoughtful design and engineering before rolling off the production line.

The 500K Acoustic Coil is in reality, a unique earpiece that has been adapted from the design of standard-issue Secret Service headsets. This is a lightweight acoustic coil that will rest securely and comfortably in the ear without causing any occluding to the ear canal, hence allowing one to wear the headset all day long sans feeling of discomfort and overheating.

Not only that, IASUS has also thrown in a noise-reducing unidirectional microphone that has been housed within the 500K's answer/end call button for uncompromised clarity. It features durable cables and a military-spec answer button to ensure that with the 500K Headset, you will never fail to connect to your incoming calls and web conferences.

You can use the 500K Headset with computers as well as most cell phones on the market, where each $99 purchase will need no installation, charging, pairing, or assembly and will be accompanied by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
