Get rid of those clothing store fitting rooms with mybestfit Posted: 03 May 2011 04:24 PM PDT I don’t do a lot of clothes shopping, and I usually treat the fitting rooms as one of those “necessary evils”. Generally, they are too cramped, and trying on clothes for “the right size” and “the right look” can be time consuming if you are shopping with your wife. I believe that mybestfit, this transparent capsule of a room that you are seeing here, is the future of fitting rooms. Simply put, it is a full body scanner that doesn’t use lasers, but instead has a “vertical wand” array of 196 radio wave antennas for a 3D model of the body. Somehow, it can scan more than 200,000 points of data from your body in 10 or 15 seconds. There is a video after the jump so you can see how it will work. You will notice in the video how the person who gets scanned gets a bar code. Honestly, I don’t like any representation of a human being as a bar code, but I believe that this code can only be compared to sizes of clothes. So if a user sees an outfit that he or she likes, a scan will reveal whether it fits or not. No trying-on is necessary, and this is great for situations for when you are buying clothes for someone else. Hopefully, you will be able to see these booths at Levi’s, Eddie Bauer, and the Gap in the near future, and fitting rooms will be a historical footnote. The Icon Link: A bright light in a small package Posted: 03 May 2011 03:56 PM PDT There is no end to miniature flashlights, and since we will always need them, there will always be a market for them. I got a chance to try out the Link from Icon, and it is quite a light. It has a light output of about 50 lumens or 6 lumens. I turned off the lights to try it for myself, and I was surprised at how bright it actually was. The circle of light it made illuminated pretty much any dark in the way, and I made the mistake of looking directly into the light. You know those spots you see after looking at the sun? I saw them for a little bit after looking into the Icon Link. I am assuming that the bright output is a result of the Solid Total Internal Reflection (TIR) lens for creating a smooth focused beam. Another cool feature is the power-regulated LED which can maximize output and runtime, and “never needs replacing”. The Icon Link is sealed with O-rings, and is waterproof to one meter for about 30 minutes. It also has the handy clip that you see there which actually goes along the body of the flashlight rather than at the end of it, like most mini-flashlights. The ICON Link Dual-Output LED Flashlight is available on Amazon for about $20-30, depending on what deal is going on with it. It runs on a AA battery, which is included. Augmented Reality Tattoos work well with the Nintendo 3DS Posted: 03 May 2011 03:32 PM PDT About one year ago, I did an article about augmented reality tattoos. It was a Beunos Aries-based software producer who had the AR marker on their flesh, thanks to a company known as ThinkAnApp. A YouTube user name Cranberryzero realized that the 3DS is a terrific excuse to get his own AR tattoo, and he posted his work and the results on I Heart Chaos. You can see the video after the jump, and the results are quite impressive. I’m not certain what kind of game he is playing on his arm, but you notice the shakiness of it. What is really interesting is the effect of creating a pit on his arm, and it almost looks like you can look through his wrist. Still, it is pretty impressive to play a game on your arm with graphics floating over it, and this is the appeal of augmented reality. Granted, you might not want a permanent mark there. I don’t know how long augmented reality will be around, and I wouldn’t want to be the grandpa that has to explain to his grandkids why there is a strange tattoo on my arm. Perhaps this effect could be done with a temporary tattoo. By the way, the video doesn’t show a Mii character on the wrist. I think this is a doctored photo from my Source. VIA AMOS-5001 Chassis Kit for Slim Em-ITX Embedded Systems Posted: 03 May 2011 06:00 AM PDT
This is touted to be a robust, flexible, and fanless chassis kit, resulting in it being the slimmest and most compact chassis design in the world when you take the wide range of x86 64-bit embedded computing applications into consideration. Just how slim or small is it? For starters, it measures a mere 35.2mm in height and 231mm in widfth, making it slim enough to be slotted into even the most space-constrained environment. Systems that are built using the VIA AMOS-5001 are also tough cookies in their own right, being shock resistant and is able to withstand even the most extreme temperatures. The VIA AMOS-5001 chassis kit will come with a unique modular design that comprises of just a quartet of mechanical parts which ensures the easy integration of VIA EITX-3001 series mainboards. If you want to throw in a 2.5″ hard drive, there is an optional storage subsystem chassis to fulfill that need. Nice to know that VIA has already readied the VIA AMOS-5001 at the moment, where it is targeted at a wide range of embedded segments including medical, POI/POS, digital signage, kiosk, industrial and building automation, and gaming and surveillance applications. Not only that, the VIA AMOS-5001 chassis kit proves its toughness by being able to withstand a wide temperature range of -20°c to 55°c, and can also shrug off G-forces of up to 50. Each VIA AMOS-5001 chassis is easy to assemble and maintain, since it makes use of only four separate mechanical parts to form a slim, robust fanless system. The VIA AMOS-5001 chassis will merge the unique integrated heatsink design that is commonly found on Em-ITX boards, while a discrete aluminum heatsink will come into direct contact with the processor and chipset on reverse side of the board, resulting in a solid, robust base for chassis assembly. If you so desire, an optional storage compartment can also be added. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Color Adjusting Illuminated Vase Posted: 03 May 2011 05:30 AM PDT Until someone comes up with a color-changing flower so that you can always have a different on other days, I guess we will just have to make do with the Color Adjusting Illuminated Vase. Hey, don’t look at me this way – at least you can have a different cycle of colors for the vase instead of the flowers, giving you a change either way. This vase was specially customized to illuminate in up to 300 different colors, now how about that? Of course, I am quite sure that some of the color differences would be so subtle, you can hardly tell anything has changed especially when fourteen LEDs (six white and eight colored) are used within the rim. The LEDs will cast a solid hue or transition seamlessly through the colors in two- or eight-second intervals, and since it is cordless, this means you won’t run into trouble of people tripping all over it. A rechargeable battery powers this puppy, where the vase is able to illuminate up to 12 hours after a 10-hour charge – at least the law of diminishing returns does not apply to this $179.95 addition to your home. Fanbrella shields you from sun and rain and more Posted: 03 May 2011 05:00 AM PDT
The integrated motorized fan with a UV-reflecting canopy results in this being a carry-along haven on hot summer days. There is a button which is conveniently located at the bottom of the handle which will activate a quiet three-blade fan under the canopy, where it rotates up to 650 rpm in order to produce a refreshing downdraft. When you close the Fanbrella, the fan’s blades themselves will collapse along the umbrella’s shaft for added convenience. Since the umbrella’s shaft and ribs are made out of plastic that deliver sturdy support, they will not rust like metal. Powered by half a dozen AA batteries, these will deliver up to 5.5 hours of non-stop cooling. Seems to be more battery-hungry than my classic Game Boy Color… The Fanbrella can be yours for a cooling $79.95. Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. RCA sets world alight with new portable digital TV receivers Posted: 02 May 2011 07:30 PM PDT RCA has just introduced a new range of portable digital TV receivers for the masses, where these were specially designed to deliver instantaneous access to local TV news and weather broadcasts to viewers, all coming in a small, affordable package. All models on offer will boast either rechargeable built-in batteries or easily-replaceable AA batteries, although we would prefer the former since that would be more environmentally friendly – albeit the latter being a whole lot more convenient since AA batteries can be purchased from just about anywhere you are in the world. At present, battery operated portable TV sets have more or less disappeared no thanks to the transition to all digital broadcasting a couple of years ago. Although these new devices were designed for digital TV reception, they cannot let you access low power analog TV signals, albeit with some models being equipped with reception capability for new Mobile DTV viewing that enables one to watch TV while he/she is on the move. Among the new RCA portable TV models would include the Storm Ready, which is a 3.5″ portable TV that will retail for $89 each. This model (DHT235C) boasts of a bright LED backlit LCD display, standard ATSC digital TV reception, real time signal strength indicator, closed captioning capability, easel back stand and silver/black finish cabinet, built-in monopole antenna, and a quartet of AA batteries are able to have it run for up to 3 hours. As for the 3.5″ Hybrid Portable Television (DMT335R), this $119 purchase will share the same size as the DHT235C, where it will also come with a bright LED backlit LCD screen, in addition to Mobile DTV capability apart from having standard ATSC digital TV reception. Running on AC power if you run out of four AA batteries, other hardware specifications include a real time signal strength indicator, closed captioning capability, easel back stand and bronze/black finish, English/Spanish display and a built-in monopole antenna. Any takers for RCA’s latest offerings? TRENDnet 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter Posted: 02 May 2011 07:19 PM PDT TRENDnet has just rolled out a spanking new 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter (also known by the model number TEW-684UB), where it is touted to be the first ultra-high performance 450 Mbps wireless USB adapter in the world. The 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter will be able to upgrade both your desktop and laptop to the highest wireless performance that is available today. Currently, most computers purchased that come with integrated wireless are more often than not outfitted with either 150 Mbps Wireless N or even slower 54 Mbps Wireless G technology, where they are the bottleneck culprits when you’re connected to a 450 Mbps router. This is what TRENDnet intends to reverse with the TEW-684UB. Boasting of advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology alongside a trio of spatial streams per antenna are able to generate a maximum theoretical wireless throughput of 450 Mbps. You can quickly connect to a 450 Mbps 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz wireless network with but a touch of a button, apart from the convenience of one-touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). The inclusion of a 3-foot USB extension cable also makes it easier for you to strategically place the adapter in your home or office, while TRENDnet has also thrown in the WMM Quality of Service (QoS) technology that will do its bit to prioritize gaming, Internet calls, and video streams. LEDs are conveniently located on the front of the adapter to convey device status. According to Pei Huang, President and CEO of TRENDnet, “In the highly competitive Networking market space, it is fairly difficult to be the first to market with new technology. Thanks to the dedication of all TRENDnet employees, we have brought to market, not only the first 450 Mbps USB adapter, but also the first 450 Mbps router, 450 Mbps Ethernet adapter, and 450 Mbps access point. Now for the first time, TRENDnet gives consumers the opportunity to network all of their devices to a high speed 450 Mbps network.” If you want to up the ante for wireless performance in your home or office, then the 450 Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter can be yours for a highly affordable $79.99.
