The YUBE – iPhone Exercise App Really Takes You Away

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 09:29 AM PDT

The YUBE is an augmented reality application for stationary exercise, you've seen it before, someone pedaling away on a stationary bike and watching the world seemingly pass by on a TV screen. It uses an iPhone or iPod Touch to synchronize the user’s body motion to travel through an actual video, so you can travel the world without ever leaving the gym.

The YUBE plays video (scenic travel or even competitive racing) to the speed of your actual exercise.  The iPhone or iPod Touch is attached to your arm (for walking or running) or leg (for biking) and then the application senses your body speed and uses that to control the speed of the video.  The faster you go the faster you go through the video. Imagine yourself tearing through the streets of Paris or along the scenic shorelines of Santa Barbara.

For me I think it would be better if someone were chasing me, with weapons, or better still if we could have virtual exercise instead, you know, where I could repose on the couch and burn up calories like a marathon runner, I'd even allow a little sweating as long as I didn’t have to get up, or put down my Doritos, but alas, this is the best they can do for now.

The Yube has been around for a while but it needed to be connected to your TV in order to display your exercise video, now with AirPlay and Apple TV,  you can be anywhere in the room and beam your video right to the TV without cords or wires.

The Yube works with exercise bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, stepping machines, spinning bikes, or anything that is considered stationary exercise. A stepping machine video? really? What's that like?

Yube offers a full and a lite version, $4.99 and $1.99 respectively, and both are available at www.iTunes.com

How I tested out the Dry Case with my own phone at CTIA Spring 2011

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 08:54 AM PDT

See that phone there at the bottom of the fishtank? It is mine. You might think that that I am worried that this is the last time I will see its beautiful wall paper (that’s a picture of my wife on it), but I am not, because it is in the Dry Case.

We have reported on this particular device before, but it is something that you have to see to believe. The demonstration at CTIA Spring 2011 made me a believer, and I’m not certain what compelled me to risk my phone over it. Man, if it didn’t work, that would have sucked.

Fortunately, the Dry Case guy was there, and sealed the bag properly. He then used this small hand-pump to create the vacuum seal, and it went into the drink. If the fish tank that you see in the picture was 100 feet deep, it would have worked.

Of course, I’m not a scuba diver. If I wanted to listen to music on my phone ten feet underwater, I could do that with the Dry Buds, which are about $29.99. Also, if I wanted to take my tablet PC underwater, Dry Case has one of those for about $59.99. The regular Dry Case is about $39.99, and it comes with a buoyant armband. If you want the Sports Belt, you can get that for about $19.99. You should be able to pick all of these up at the Dry Case site now.

Bluetooth Headset Camcorder

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:30 AM PDT

A Bluetooth headset is pretty much commonplace, and more or less everyone who owns a cell phone has one of these in their pockets, at home, or dangling right outside their ear. The next time you see someone wearing something that is not quite like a Bluetooth headset, and yet isn’t a hearing aid, you might want to ask him/her whether this is the Bluetooth Headset Camcorder or not.

This unique Bluetooth headset will not only record, but can transmit video over to a smartphone device. Of course, you can forget about living the High Definition life with this since it will shoot video at 480p resolution at 30 fps, which should be good enough for spy videos and to collect incriminating evidence of your adversary with but a glance.

Wirelessly transmitting an MPEG4 recording to an iPhone or Android smartphone, your smartphone will function as the viewfinder as you position your head to properly align the camcorder with your field of vision. All recorded video will be instantly shared via e-mail, either that or you can opt to post them on Facebook or Youtube with but a single button press. Seems to be the perfect toy for James Bond junior at a rather hefty $199.95.

Wireless Parasol Speaker

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 06:00 AM PDT

For many of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere, summer will be right at our doorstep before we know it. After all, the long chill of winter is over, and spring is in full swing (although certain parts of the country are starting to get bizarre with snow in the spring) as it marches towards summer. That’s the time you break open the umbrellas, as you prepare your summer menu and activities which are often held outdoors.

Why not add some zest the next time you have a huge parasol in your garden? Get the £49.99 Wireless Parasol Speaker and clip it to the pole of any outdoor parasol and you’re good to go, it doesn’t really matter whether said parasol is large or small since it has a self-adjusting flexi-grip. For out of sight audio, just clip it to the base of the pole, or if you want to listen to your favorite tunes from above, clip it to the top and you’re good to go.

Should the sun decide to hide behind the hills because of this thing called “dusk”, you will be pleased to know that the Wireless Parasol Speaker comes with a dozen built-in LEDs that will shed light on your surroundings – flick it on with a switch for an easy transition. With an indoor transmitter that can work with just about any audio system, the Wireless Parasol Speaker on the outside can pick up the signal within a 15 meter radius.

Jabra announces FREEWAY speakerphone

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

Jabra has announced their spanking new speakerphone for those who tend to receive far more calls than they should whenever they are on the road. After all, it is considered to be a driving offense in most countries by now if you happen to hold up a phone to your ear while you’re behind the wheel, and the FREEWAY intends to make life a whole lot easier (and cheaper, since there won’t be any more tickets issued to you for flouting the law).

The Jabra FREEWAY is touted to be a revolutionary new speakerphone which will usher in yet another industry-first innovation, as it intends to bring audio quality to a whole new level thanks to a ground-breaking new three speaker system. This is the first of its kind in the industry, not to mention support for HD Ready Voice for superior audio quality regardless of whether you are the one receiving the call, or making one.

The Jabra FREEWAY is capable of functioning as a device inside the car, or outside when the situation calls for it, without suffering from any drop in performance or quality. Heck, if you want, you can also use it to listen to music with any compatible device, ranging from an iPad to an iPod touch, iPhone, MP3 player or video game console.

As with most car speakerphone designs these days, the Jabra FREEWAY will be clipped to your car’s visor, where it will turn on automatically whenever the car door is opened, and will aid you in pairing the device to your handset. Voice commands can be used to make, answer, end, redial or reject calls, making sure your hands are always on the wheel to react to road conditions. The moment a conversation is finished or when you’ve arrived at your destination, the FREEWAY will automatically turn itself off, so you need not fret about whether there is enough battery for the next call or not.

Each $129 purchase of the Jabra FREEWAY will be accompanied by a free one year subscription (that normally costs $59) to Voice Assist, a voice controlled app that can be used with any type of cell phone or IP-connected device. Expect this nifty little device to hit the markets this May.

Clingo is a new way to store your phone

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PDT

We have reported on Clingo products before, like the Neklit for the Nano.

For those who don’t know, Clingo relies on a film that will literally stick to the mobile device itself. I tried it out for myself at CTIA Spring 2011, and I have to admit that it does have a lot of sticking power. However, when I wanted to peel it off, it came off without any harm to the phone itself. In case you are wondering, you can wash it off when it becomes dirty, and it will remain sticky after that.

I thought that this was easily the most unusual thing I had seen at CTIA this year, and Clingo has a whole line out of accessories for mobile phones. There is a Universal Mobile Stand for sticking your phone at the right angle, a Universal Car Phone Mount for using your phone’s GPS capability, and a Universal Game Wheel in case you want to steer with the proper racing App.

I got a hold of the Universal Mobile Neklit. In case you don’t know what that is, let’s just say that if I were to stick and iPad on it and run a large analog clock app, I would like like Flava Flav.

There are more Clingo accessories than I could possibly name in one single post, so if you want to check it out for yourself, head on over to the Clingo site.

Chumby Gets an Update – He’s Back and Better Than Ever

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 08:20 PM PDT

We have certainly told you about Chumby before, and while I am a huge fan of what I have called a glorified alarm clock, it has always come up a bit short of spectacular. It's a lot of fun, don't get me wrong, but it could have been great. It just fell short of utilizing what it seemed like it had the capabilities of doing all along.

Well, it's time to meet the Chumby 8, who is faster, bigger, stronger and does everything you wondered why your old Chumby didn't! Of course you still get all of the same great Chumby content and features offered in past Chumby models with a whole bunch of new features, including an internet browser, easier setup, ready to play channels, free subscriptions, cool upload features, a scheduling service, videos and apps, new music sources including Napster and, wait for it… the battery back-up it needed all along!

Chumby can be your bedside companion or kitchen buddy, that will let you view your favorite stuff on the internet in a continuous streaming type format. Always on, always updated, you can check Facebook, sports scores, stock quotes, David Lettermans top 10 list and listen to your favorite tunes all without pressing a button. Wake up to birds chirping, followed by headline news and the weather. Just plug in your Chumby, connect to your network, and use your computer to create a lineup of favorites from over 1,500 apps in more than 30 categories, Then let your Chumby do its thing. I’m loving it.

Available April 5th 2011 for under $200.00 bucks from  www.store.chumby.com
