Vivienne Tam limited edition “Double Happiness” Square credit card reader

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 05:00 AM PST

For those of you who are not in the know, we are still in the midst of celebrating Chinese New Year, where this festival lasts a good 15 days. Of course, there will be plenty of firecrackers, feasting and giving out of red packets among relatives and friends, with red being a very significant color during this period simply because it is meant to usher in prosperity for the year ahead.

Designer Vivienne Tam is not ignorant of the situation, and has even decided to jump headlong into the festivities as well with her limited edition “Double Happiness” Square credit card reader. Shop keepers and store owners who celebrate Chinese New Year might want to take a look at this limited edition device, as it basically allows anyone to accept credit cards by plugging a card reader into your phone or iPad.

This ia a collaboration between Tam and Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, CEO and co-founder of Square, in order to end up with this one-of-a-kind reader, where it merges technological simplicity with elegance.

The branded Square reader will come in a black lacquer-like color, where it features the Chinese symbol for double happiness in red. Obviously inspired by Tam’s ‘China Chic’ style which is also representative of her personal mantra, the two characters for happiness (xi) are joined to express the joy of wedded union. Chinese culture tends to favor equilibrium; yin is balanced by yang, and symmetry is an underlying principle in all realms of design.

The ‘Double Happiness’ Square intends to merge both worlds of technology and fashion together, and according to Tam, “I believe this will resonate with customers — it’s cutting edge, and easy to use. It will inspire women to start or grow their businesses.”

Would you fork out $10 for this? Look at it this way, making a purchase will also have you do a good deed since all proceeds will be donated to Happy Hearts Fund, which improves children’s lives through educational and sustainable programs in natural disaster areas.

Light Cycle burns a hole in your pocket

Posted: 13 Feb 2011 04:30 AM PST

For the five of you out there who have yet to watch Tron: Legacy, you don’t know what you’re missing. We’re talking about super slick special effects that are guaranteed to have your jaw drop when you view it in 3D, and if you want to own a memorable piece from the movie, might we suggest you check out the Light Cycle here?

This illuminated, street-legal motorcycle is inspired by the computer animated cycle from the above mentioned 2010 film Tron: Legacy, where it has been specially designed for casual cruising and slow ride-bys at shows. A steel frame covered by a fiberglass cowling replicates the sleek look of its computer-generated imagery counterpart.

Apart from that, more jaws will drop at its electroluminescent strips that are built into the tire cowlings, wheel rims, and body in order to illuminate the cycle. Underneath all of that is a fuel-injected Suzuki 996cc, 4-stroke engine that won’t make the same noise as the bike in the movie, but at least it will impress whoever looks at it. Of course, you probably won’t get very far with its 3 1/2-gallon main fuel tank and 1 1/4-gallon reserve tank. Since all cycles are built to order, you can expect to have a tiff with your other half when discussing the $55,000 price tag this puppy comes with.
