The Smoking Gun smokes but doesn’t cook food Posted: 09 Aug 2010 04:22 PM PDT If you’ve become obsessed with giving your food that smoky flavor, you might looking into this Smoking Gun. It’ll allow for you to smoke a whole lot more than you normally would thanks to some unconventional methods. Instead of being stuck only smoking foods while you cook them, you can smoke items that you don’t actually want cooked. You just choose your wood as normal and use the gun to blow it onto your food of choice. Since the smoke travels a little bit of a distance it won’t actually cook the food of choice. It will work on delicate fruits and vegetables as well as both cooked and uncooked meats. The extender hose measures 18" long and the gun itself features a removable filter. You can purchase The Smoking Gun for $99.95 through Williams-Sonoma. Source: GadgetLab Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 09 Aug 2010 03:45 PM PDT This gadget took a design cue from seagulls in a very smart way. The top of this lamp looks like its ready to break away from the stand and fly off into the darkness, lighting the ground as it goes. This interesting looking light isn’t just another concept design either. It’ll soon be up for sale so that you can light your favorite book with it. Those wings aren’t just there for looks either, they have a little movement to give you control over the angle of the lights. The light itself is packed full of 72 LED lights, that all together only have an output of 14W. Which is likely enough to make it appeal to those of you that are trying to be a little more energy efficient. The knob to turn it off and on also can dim the light as dim as 5%. These are said to become available this August. Source: Gizmowatch Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Sharpie creates liquid pencils Posted: 09 Aug 2010 03:01 PM PDT It seems like people are writing less and less, some prefer to even type up quick memos instead of jotting them down on a post-it note. For those that still prefer to write things down on normal paper, there’s a new writing utensil out there. Sharpie has come out with an interesting new pencil, that mimics pens by being liquid. We already have erasable pens and mechanical pencils, I suppose this was the logical next step. We just couldn’t keep writing in the same way that other generations did 50 years ago. These Sharpie pencils will allow for you to erase your work up to a certain point. After it’s been sitting for over 3 days you won’t be able to erase it, but for at least a little while you can. These are already making their way to Office Depot just in time for the back to school frenzy of shopping. Posted: 09 Aug 2010 06:30 AM PDT For those of you who have run out of ways to decorate your home, you might want to consider getting the Automatic Can Bin. After all, it definitely is cheaper than those high end models from names like Brabantia, and for £49.99 a pop, you will be able to place this conversation starter in just about any corner of the home without having it look out of place. Featuring a sensor in its lid that makes things more practical and hygienic, the Automatic Can Bin will feature a mirror finish (hopefully it won’t get scratched too soon) alongside stainless steel. The sensor is sensitive enough to detect movement from 15cm to 20cm away, and will close after 5 secnods. A black plastic inner removable liner bucket makes it easier to clean it separately once the bin is nearly full – just don’t exceed the 30 liter limit and you’ll do just fine. It would be nice to see different brands of drinks appear on the outside like Coke or Pepsi for that added touch of class. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Posted: 09 Aug 2010 06:00 AM PDT Want to hone your reflexes, but don’t want to take chances by playing with a crab and its pincers? Enter the Karate Copycat Challenge, where this game will challenge players to use quick, karate-like hand movements in order to match sequences of flashing lights and music. There is a quartet of semi-circular rings in the device itself, were each of them will feature a curved light bar that illuminates according to one of seven possible games. Players will be directed to wave a hand into the open space within a certain interval after a light flashes while a musical note plays to score. In order to keep track of your progress (or your failure to keep up), a motion detector in each space will measure a player’s response time to ensure the sequence is followed to a tee. As you attempt to repeat an accelerating pattern of lights, you will also be instrumental in keeping a song going by waving hands through loops as they illuminate, enabling you to “tag” as many lights within a certain timeframe, or to build/compose songs by playing the game like a musical instrument. Best to get a quartet of rechargeable AA batteries to go along with this if you intend to be on the green side of things. Hammacher is asking $39.95 for the Karate Copycat Challenge. Magic Mirror can do some interesting, interactive things Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:59 AM PDT We’ve seen a lot of magic mirrors here on Coolest Gadgets, like the Magic Mirror Security System and the Interactive Mirror. This is another in a short line of magical mirrors. This “magic mirror” is designed by Al Linke, and my source says that it was originally designed for his daughter’s playhouse. I’m not certain what he intended it to do for his daughter, maybe some sort of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs tribute toy. He definitely put a whole new twist on it as he was able to give it the ability to give weather reports. It can also tell you how your stock portfolio is progressing. Another added feature is breathalyzer mode. All you have to do is breathe into a small apparatus (not the mirror glass itself) and it will read your Blood Alcohol Level. I certain don’t see why there couldn’t be a custom-made magic mirror for everyone. I think I would design it like the Yahoo home page, so it could read me my email, give me news headlines, and maybe even give me my schedule. I’m not certain if I want that face talking to me. I could use a little something impersonal for interaction. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. SkinnyBytes reveals new range of All-In-One computers Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:30 AM PDT
What does SkinnyBytes offer with their new range? For starters, we’re talking about value and to elaborate on it further, research has shown that eliminating the need for installing an AC outlet can easily reduce the cost of having new computers around by at least 50%. With Power-over-Ethernet computers, they could very well be the new example of the ultimate eco-friendly computer, using up to 90% less juice than a traditional computer – perfect for lowering your power bills. Imagine running a business with 100 computers, multiplying that savings by a hundredfold. You can’t get any greener than this unless someone comes up with a hamster-powered computer. Apart from that, there are safety issues to consider. AC power is very dangerous due to the high-voltage/high-current it supplies, and making prevention better than cure. In classroom environments, the safety of the students could not be emphasized more, where AC outlets within reach of curious students might just be fatal. Power-over-Ethernet computers use low-voltage/low-current power over a standard network cable, doing away with the need for AC electrical receptacles. Since this range of PoE computers are compatible with IEEE standard 802.3at for Power-over-Ethernet, they also utilize other power saving technologies such as solid state drives, low-power Intel Atom Processors, LED backlighting, and passive cooling technologies. All of them will come with Windows 7 pre-installed and a TouchScreen interface regardless of their size. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Rock’Em Sock ‘Em Robots done wirelessly Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:18 AM PDT I am sure that you don’t really need an introduction to the game that these people are playing. I’m sure all of us have played Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots at some point in our lives. I’m also sure that you have noticed that the people playing this game are not using their hands. That is because Zachery Shivers and Anne Flichbaugh have made Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots motion controlled. There is a video here if you want to see how they did it. Be warned, there is a lot of technical jargon that the layman may not understand. All you need to know is that the wrists can detect punching motion and other movement, and it transmits to the figures so one player can knock the other player’s block off. The rest is a lot of specifics that make it look like you could build a motion controlled version of this game for yourself. Just to let you know, this is not something that a toy maker is working on at this present time. This is a part of a Texas Instruments’ Co-op Design Challenge. So do we have a winner? Well, if you like to watch different people say “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em robots”, then at least this video is a hit. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Epson wants you to get printing with more all-in-one models Posted: 09 Aug 2010 05:00 AM PDT
The Artisan 835 would be the flagship model of the series, where it will feature a 7.8″ smart touch panel display, a 3.5″ color LCD display, an integrated fax capability (not that many people use it these days, but still), and a 30-page Automatic Document Feeder which makes it a snap to copy and fax documents in a jiffy. As for the Artisan 725, this model will come with an enhanced touch panel for easier navigation. Both of them will come with 2.5 times faster wireless connectivity thanks to Wi-Fi n connectivity, not to mention support for wireless printing from an Apple iPhone. It also touts to have the fastest 4" x 6" photo print speed in the world, but we guess that depends on how it was benchmarked. Using Epson's six-color Ultra Hi-Definition Claria ink, printouts are expected to look stunning, whether images or text. The remaining features of the Artisan Series are as follows :-
The Artisan 725 will retail for $199.99 while the Artisan 835 is going for $299.99 as they make their way to the markets sometime in the middle of this month onwards. And Now the Award for Best Use of a Giant Robotic Arm Posted: 09 Aug 2010 04:27 AM PDT My source called this photo the “image of the day”, and I have to agree. You might wonder this is. Just to let you know, it has nothing to do with Neo and his friends aboard the Nebuchadnezzar getting plugged into the Matrix. It is about creating a virtual simulation. Believe it or not, the purple section that you see in the photo is part of a gigantic robotic arm. I don’t know what this mammoth robot arm was originally used for, but it is now a vital part of a racing simulator. You can watch the video after the jump if you don’t believe me. I guess what you don’t see here in the picture is the video screen that is certainly in front of the user in the video. You will notice how the arm will lean back as the speed increases, and it shifts back and forth with the turns. I’m pretty certain that this is how Disneyland’s Star Tours works. This robot arm/racing simulator is part of a study by Paolo Robuffo Giordano at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, researching the way our bodies experience motion. I don’t think it is made for home use like the SimCraft, but I suppose if I had a giant robot arm, a TV screen, a racing game, then this is definitely the best combination that I could think of. Cricket Communications offer BlackBerry Curve 8530 Posted: 08 Aug 2010 07:00 PM PDT
Cricket will be offering the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for $299.99, where it will come with Cricket’s true rate $60 BlackBerry Plan. For $60, what can you get? For starters, we’re talking about unlimited nationwide talk, text, email, web browsing, picture mail and even international text capabilities, all done over Cricket’s all 3G network – yep, that’s right, you won’t have to worry about the signal dropping to EDGE or GPRS any more in selected areas. Of course, the $60 will also include all forms of taxes and fees save for applicable sales text, but if you’re a heavy duty user, then this will certainly sound extremely appealing considering you can go nuts with all your text messaging and email without burning a hole in your wallet. Parents might want to consider this option for their kids as well, especially those who have been bundled off to college, as it helps them keep in touch without costing too much. Just to recap, the BlackBerry Curve 8530 will come with a comfortable full-QWERTY keyboard, a high-resolution 320 x 240 pixel color display (pretty average for a BlackBerry, but don’t compare it to iPhone or Android-powered smartphones), BlackBerry Messenger, access to thousands of applications via BlackBerry App World, a powerful media player, a 2-megapixel camera with video recording capability, integrated GPS navigation, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) and Bluetooth connectivity. Media can be stored over a microSD memort card, so getting one with larger capacity is always a good idea. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Dell announces Inspiron M101z laptop availability in the US Posted: 08 Aug 2010 06:47 PM PDT
Tipping the scales at less than 4 pounds, this ultrathin laptop is more than capable of fitting into a handbag or backpack without looking out of place. Don’t be fooled by its diminutive size though, since the Inspiron M101z has more than enough processing juice to stepp through everyday tasks in a jiffy, delivering impressive playback of streaming movies and HD videos at the same time. Thanks to an inspired hinge-forward design which will ensure the display moves closer while keeping the body rigid to help enhance strength and durability, you will also benefit from easy typing and navigation thanks to its full-width keyboard. Apart from that, it has an attractive finish and smooth curves, with four colors to choose from. Powered by AMD Athlon II Neo Mobile processors and integrated ATi graphics, you will be able to achieve slightly more than 6 hours of battery life when using it, but of course that is just a ballpark figure since a lot of it depends on what kind of applications you’re running as well as the number of connections you’ve turned on. Depending on your specifications, the Inspiron M101z will start from $449 upwards, where it will be accompanied by a one-year limited warranty. Some of the more detailed specifications are as follows :-
