College students create quite a thrillride Posted: 13 Dec 2010 03:22 PM PST I suppose that the new Formula Rossa roller coaster at Ferrari World could be one of the newest thrill rides. I’ll bet it took a team of professional engineers to make that roller coaster that goes 149.1 miles per hour. However, a pair of college students named Mike Nawrot and Romain Teil have designed this particular wooden wonder. I believe that it was designed for Rush 2010, and it certain looks like quite the adrenaline rush. Apparently, it dropped “its riders vertically, then turned them face down as they skimmed 2 feet above the ground, face down and strapped with their backs to the cart, before bringing them back to vertical upside-down”. Yeah, you might want to fill out a certain form before you go on it. I don’t have the name of the college where this Reverse Cowgirl is located, but if the pledges have to go on this in order to get into a fraternity or sorority, then their Greek system might be severely depleted before the semester even begins. This is the Reverse Cowgirl, and yes, that is the name of a sexual position. There’s a funny story about how I entered the words “Reverse Cowgirl” into a search engine. I’m going to let you figure out how it goes. Introducing Foolish Gadgets because not all gadgets are cool [ College students create quite a thrillride copyright by Coolest Gadgets ] Related Posts: |
Bank Robber caught with SPFXMask Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:52 PM PST Some of you might remember when we discussed how SPFX masks can create a very realistic Mission Impossible effect of disguising the user. A recent event last spring has proven their effectiveness. The man on the immediate left is Conrad Zdzierak, and he is a Polish immigrant who held up several Ohio banks wearing the mask to his left. I’m sure he thought he was committing the perfect crime as the cops were looking for a suspect with an African-American face. The police even arrested an African-American man that they believed to be the culprit, and the scapegoat’s mother thought it was her own son when the Police showed her a surveillance photo of the robbery. Of course, Zdzierak couldn’t keep up his charade forever, and his girlfriend found the “smoking gun” of the mask and stolen money and called the police on him. You might be wondering how Zdzierak obtained the mask in the first place. Apparently, he ordered the mask from SPFXMasks, and told them it was for a movie. He even had a set of African-American hands to match with it. Okay, we are clearly moving closer to an era where we can’t trust the face of the persons that we see. Authorities are beginning to suspect that a man known the “Geezer Bandit”, who has pulled off a string of robberies in Southern California, might not be as old as they suspected. Navy Railgun can shoot at a projectile at Mach 7 Posted: 13 Dec 2010 02:28 PM PST Some of you might remember when we covered that portable coilgun that uses electromagnets to fire a projectile. This one railgun by the Navy can also fire projectiles, at an out-of-the-barrel speed of Mach 7 (approximately 5,000 miles per hour). A railgun is powered by electricity, and accelerates a conductive projectile along a pair of metal rails. The current interacts with the magnetic fields generated by the rails and this speeds the projectile on its very fast way. In case you are wondering, these projectiles have to be specially made in order to prevent them from melting from the air friction. By the way, it takes 33 Megajoules of energy to fire this gun. Some of you might be familiar with the term railgun from Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. It is a scene when actor Jon Turturro contacts a Navy ship to use its railgun to destroy a very giant Decepticon. As I recall, the person on the other end of the line said that the weapon of mass destruction was classified technology. I’m sure that the railgun in the film was a CG creation, but this aforementioned real-life railgun is planned to shoot targets from a distance of 100 miles away. Yes, that is pretty far, and is probably cheaper than a missile. As much as I think this is a cool weapon, I am not looking forward to days of railgun warfare. Chinese Sky Lanterns – a new holiday tradition Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:43 PM PST Every year, while I search for the newest or coolest stuff around, I always set aside some things that I think might be fun for my family, ideas for parties, or things I would enjoy making or having every year. Something to look forward to. This year I came across a great one, Wish Lanterns. In order for the magic to begin, you need only to light the fuel cell at the bottom of the lantern, and using the same principals as a hot air balloon, wait for the air inside the rice paper sack to heat and then watch as it gracefully glows and floats up into the sky. After you release your Wish Lantern, it will burn for approximately twelve minutes, and then the flame will extinguish and the paper will float back to the ground. Wish Lanterns are 100% biodegradable and will disappear in two to three days. Wish Lanterns are environmentally friendly and safe to use. Chinese lanterns are claimed to date as far back as the 3rd century AD as a type of signal balloon, they are also known as floating lanterns, glow lanterns, sky lanterns, sky candles or khoom fay and were recently featured in the movie "Tangled". Each Wish Lantern comes individually wrapped with a set of safety instructions enclosed and a pack of silica gel in each sleeve, a set of 10 is available from www.amazon.com for $26.99 I can picture my family overlooking the river on a still winter evening and releasing our "wishes" for the New Year. Breathtaking. Now if we were all wearing white and holding hands… yeah, I know… I've gone too far. Maverick Lifestyle announces Nica Sunrise Bluetooth headset Posted: 13 Dec 2010 05:04 AM PST
Hopefully the Nica Sunrise will bring a new dawn (pun not intended) to the world of Bluetooth headsets that have long been labeled as geeky-looking and uncomfortable, no thanks to ear inserts as well as overall poor design. In fact, research has shown that less than 1 in 20 cell phone users use a Bluetooth headset, and the introduction of the Nica Sunriseaims to change that – considering it doesn’t look and feel like a conventional Bluetooth headset, you are able to wear it for long periods of time without suffering from Bluetooth fatigue while feeling confident about how you look to the general public. With the Nica Sunrise, it boasts open-air acoustics that enables the headset to be worn comfortably for longer periods since there is no ear insert pressing on the ear canal. The open-air approach will also see a larger speaker than those found on all other headsets, which means you get to enjoy full audio on-the-go. Ergonomically designed separate left and right flexible ear clips and a soft flexible molded rubber pad will further enhance your comfort level, and with its thin design, you can cause the headset to lie flat in a pocket or fit into a small purse in a jiffy. The Nica Sunrise can be purchased from Amazon for less than the MSRP of $79.95, depending on the color of your choice. Go ahead, take your pick without worrying about the fashion police chasing you down. Juvenile Diabetes Treatment Might Just Be In The Bag Posted: 13 Dec 2010 05:03 AM PST Diabetes runs in my husbands family, his niece has it, her little girl has it, and while as a family they manage it very successfully, It just seems like something we should be able to fix by now. It just seems like something that should be easier to deal with. Well, pardon my layman-speak as I explain that Georgetown University Medical Center researchers might be on to something, they have conducted an animal study that they feel may prove that human spermatogonial stem cells extracted from testicular tissue can change into the insulin-secreting cells normally found in the pancreas. They were able to produce these cells without using any of the extra genes that were previously needed to turn stem cells into whatever tissue they wanted it to be. The use of those extra genes caused undesirable side effects, but the sperm stem cells that they were able to harvest from human organ donors already have the genes necessary to become embryonic stem cells, so it wasn't necessary to add any new genes to coax them to change into these parent cells. When these cells were transplanted into diabetic mice, they were able to decrease their glucose levels for about a week and researchers feel that with continued progress they can lengthen this timeframe and are in the hopes of providing a unique treatment for type 1 diabetes. I say, who sits around and comes up with trying stuff like this in the first place? Then I say, Please just make it work. Google Chrome OS – Stop worrying about your hard drive, you don’t need one anymore Posted: 12 Dec 2010 10:10 PM PST I have a confession to make, I sometimes lay awake at night and worry about my hard drive. I write quite a bit and I am an addicted amateur photographer who has become so worried about losing all my stuff, I back things up two different ways, just so I can sleep. Knowing I am not alone, I am excited to introduce you to Google Chrome, an operating system coming to you soon, on a laptop, with NO HARD DRIVE. That's right, the new platform stores it all, your applications, your files and pretty much everything else you might need, on online servers rather than your PC. Able to boot in 7 seconds or less, primarily because it doesn't have to load all the customary background stuff, the Chrome OS will first be available on laptops from both Samsung and Acer. I wondered what kind of storage these laptops would have, because I wonder about things such as this, when I realized that thanks to cloud-based storage for my pictures, music and files… I really shouldn't need any. So look forward to your next computer having no hard drive and virtually no storage. How awesome is that? Of course that cloud based storage, how does that work? It's not a hard drive is it? Oh come on I have to stop thinking about this stuff. Source: www.pcmag.com Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews.
