Snapstick – from your phone or laptop, to your TV, with a flick of the wrist

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 05:22 PM PST

I am an information hound. If I am not on my laptop, which is pretty rare, I am wandering around the internet on my mobile phone. The ability to use a phone to surf the internet was amazing in its day, but now even with my new reading glasses, trying to see anything on my darn phone is more of a pain than anything else.

Enter Snapstick, a developing new product that would allow you to use your laptop or mobile phone as a visual remote control that lets you pick whatever content you would like to watch, or share on the big screen, and using Snapstick’s SplitMedia™ technology, it will direct the TV to get the content you’ve selected on your phone or your laptop, directly from the Web through WiFi connected software, and when it's done, you’ve got the web on TV and your phone is free to use as usual.

Snapstick touts itself as the easiest way to integrate the internet and television and they sure make it sound simple, "if you can surf the web and watch TV, you already know how to use Snapstick" Well, I can do both at the same time and chew gum. So count me in fellas!

Okay, so its not an actual product yet, but they're in beta testing and the premise seems just perfect. I can see myself finally being able to share all the fun stuff I have on my phone with my friends and, I can put the reading glasses away. Now I'm going to dream about all the things I'd be able to do if I could just snap any internet content I wanted to a big screen… wow!  Presentations? pictures? Internet TV episodes? Youtube?  Just Awesome.

Coming soon to a living room near you….  www.snapstick.com

The Future of Food: Underground Tubes

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 03:29 PM PST

This is definitely an idea that I am pretty certain that I will never see.

Imagine a world where you no longer have to go grocery shopping. Instead, a company called Foodtubes brings the groceries to you!

The idea is to build gigantic underground tubes that are as thick as a truck, and can move underground at 60 miles an hour.

They are powered by air pressure or linear induction motors, and they are essentially big pneumatic tubes, like the type in old office buildings. I always wondered what happened to that system of communication. I remember it being out-of-date before the age of email.

Anyway, Foodtubes states that food transport is a very wasteful system, with trucks spending 92 percent of fuel just hauling their own weight, as well as increasing our carbon footprint. Foodtubes says that there is more to establishing this system than just laying tracks. Listen to what they had to say about the freight industry “man”:

The freight industry is deeply entrenched at every level of government and commerce. . . they claim rights to profit from dominating our roads, shaking our buildings and polluting our air. Many traditional politicians and food bosses are oil-junkies, dedicated to keeping things as they are–whatever the social costs.

Apparently, Foodtubes intend to test this out on a five mile above-ground test circuit, and then create a track for the entire UK.

Smartstand puts an iPad on the Pedestal

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:58 PM PST

I suppose that the conductor behind the pedestal leading an orchestra is one of the oldest ways of listening to music.

While technology can create all kinds of synthesized orchestration, I will leave it up to decide whether it is an improvement. Yes, an electronic baton might not help a conductor, but an electronic pedestal might.

The SmartStand puts all the sheet music in a digital format for the conductor, and makes it so he or she presses on a pedal to turn the page.

You may be wondering why this would be invented. After all, it looks like someone just put an iPad on a stand. There are many accessories already for that.

I’m guessing that the iPad or any other tablet PC doesn’t come with an online music school, an instrument tuner, and other apps needed for conducting a band. Are there Apps for that?

I wonder if this Smartstand is designed in such a way so that the user would not need a band. Perhaps he or she could just program music to play on command, and just have the baton just for effect.

For some reason, I don’t seem to have a price or release date for this SmartStand. I would imagine that it would be equal to or greater than the price of a regular tablet PC, though.

Proverbial wallets know your virtual cash better than you

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:28 PM PST

We live in a society where having virtual money is essentially just as good as real money, but virtual money slips easier between the fingers than cold hard cash.

Some people at MIT have created Proverbial Wallets, and they are designed to hook up to a cellular phone via Bluetooth. Smartphones are probably required, as the phones must be in tune with the user’s account.

There are three of these Proverbial Wallets, which I will detail after the jump, along with a video:

The Bumblebee is designed to vibrate with every swipe of the credit card. Honestly, I think this is the most useless of the three, as most people should probably have their wallet in their hand when their card is being used. That should be enough of an alert.

The Mother Bear is one that will “resist opening if you are getting within your budget”. I am assuming that it is pre-programmed to do so, and I wonder if it will open at all if you have blown your budget.

Then there is the Peacock, a wallet that will grow or shrink, depending on how much money is in your account. It does this by inflating, seriously.

In all honesty, I don’t see the practicality of the proverbial wallets. I don’t see this as a practical application of technology to achieve fiscal discipline.

Jawbone THOUGHTS unveiled

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:32 PM PST

Mention the word “Jawbone” and most people would definitely have the image of one of those sleek looking Bluetooth headsets spring to mind. After all, Aliph did a pretty good job in getting word of their Jawbone series around, backing it up with some really solid performance where hardware is concerned, although certain quarters do feel that the physical size is still somewhat larger than most of the other Bluetooth headsets in the market.

No matter, we’re talking about software today, where Aliph just introduced Jawbone THOUGHTS, an iPhone application which enables users to easily send quick voice messages to individuals and groups, doing so without the need for typing or calling. Sounds like a dream, eh? Hopefully it will work out so as we describe the Jawbone THOUGHTS in the extended post.

This application will merge the speed of texting, the group collaboration of email, and the emotional quality of voice all in one. Best of all is, even in this economically trying period for most people, the Jawbone THOUGHTS isn’t going to cost you a penny. You read that right, it is available as a free download in the Apple App store.

According to Travis Bogard, Vice President of Product Management and Strategy at Jawbone, “We live in a world that is 100% mobile, 100% connected and unfortunately 150% distracted. Reading and typing doesn’t work when you need your hands and eyes to navigate the physical world. While there has been a tremendous amount of innovation in text based messaging, all of it lacks the richness of voice. THOUGHTS is our solution to these realities by integrating all the things we love from text-based communications with the power of voice. We think it’s a really powerful way to share ideas quickly.”

Just how much faster must we communicate with one another? What happened to a good ol’ fashioned sit-down-and-have-a-heart-to-heart talk? Perhaps times have changed too fast for us, but we’re still quite sure that Jawbone THOUGHTS will be successful in its own way.

Sanyo Taho set to conquer the wilderness

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:24 PM PST

Do you have a wild streak in you that intends to go off on an adventure at every single opportunity? If that is the case, then apart from owning a nice four wheel drive to get you and your family to a faraway destination, chances are you will need a communications tool which will be able to keep up with you. Of course, an iPhone 4 is nice and all, but will it be able to last the distance when you’re busy tracking bears and living it out in nature? Those who are looking for a companion phone under such trying circumstances need not look any further, thanks to Kyocera churning out the new Sanyo Taho that not only looks good at first glance, it is also more than capable of taking a beating.

Don’t be fooled by its exterior that exudes calm, put it through its paces and in spite of all the harshest elements that it experiences, it will still work reliably enough for you to call for help should such a situation arise. Not only that, you can even take a nice 29 minute bath at the river with the Sanyo Taho fully immersed within and it will still work after that – just don’t wade into water that is more than a meter deep and the Taho will be all right, at least for half an hour. This fully submersible device can be yours for a cent shy of a Benjamin – we’re talking about $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and agreeing to a new 2-year contract. Of course, all of this won’t happen until January 9, 2011, when it hits the official market then.

This no-nonsense handset won’t come with the latest features though, so you will have to make do with its 2-megapixel camera with flash and camcorder capability, which is a far cry of what other smartphones can do these days. Apart from that, you will be well pleased with its military standard 810G certification, where it is able to stand up to dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, blowing rain and water immersion. This clamshell phone also sports applications such as Sprint Navigation and Sprint Family Locator for added value.

Lady’s Rechargeable Heated Slippers

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:16 PM PST

With winter coming upon us living in the northern hemisphere, staying warm is definitely something that all should look into – after all, how can you function at your optimal level if you’re freezing (inside or outside)? Well, Hammacher intends to keep the feet of your lady nice and toasty with the Lady’s Rechargeable Heated Slippers. These will be totally different from microwavable models that lose their warmth in less than an hour, as these rechargeable heated slippers are full well capable of warding off chilly feet for up to half a dozen hours. This is made possible thanks to an unobtrusive rechargeable battery pack which can be tucked discreetly into a hook-and-loop pocket. Courtesy of the stainless steel fiber heating element located under the forefoot, it can maintain a consistent temperature to keep feet comfortably warm and extend battery life. Seems to be the perfect Christmas gift for the missus at $99.95 if you’re all out of ideas.

Hand Paper Shredder

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:12 PM PST

Identity theft is extremely common these days – otherwise, how do you manage to collect so much spam in the virtual as well as real world in such a short period of time without soliciting that many companies in the first place? Well, for those who want to keep things private, there is always something you can do on your part. Case in point, the Hand Paper Shredder that you see here. Don’t get put off by the $23.99 price tag for something that requires manual labor – at least you can be sure that even your sensitive information in the office can be disposed of properly even when there is a blackout, as you need not rely on a power outlet or batteries, using good ol’ fashioned hand crank power instead. The only problem? We don’t think your arms are able to last the distance if you have a few thousand pages of information to shred…

Bling Nation – soon it’ll be okay to lose your wallet

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 08:55 PM PST

It's no longer a prophesy, I'd say it's a forgone conclusion, the cashless society is almost here…

Businesses like Bling Nation, based in Palo Alto California, are getting things rolling with stickers that will allow you to transfer your hard earned cash to stores, restaurants, or your friends with the tap of your mobile phone and all without giving anyone access to your personal information. No longer are credit cards, checks or cash necessary.

Bling Nation provides customers with free "Bling tags", available from participating business locations, that are affixed to the back of your mobile phone, these tags transmit data using a unique mobile platform that enables tap-and-connect capabilities. Bling tag users can also earn and redeem loyalty rewards and receive text-messages confirming their purchases.

When users tap the tag on a proprietary reader at participating retailers, it pays with money from their PayPal accounts. For added security, users will enter a personal identification number for purchases over a certain amount.

Merchants can buy or rent the Bling tag reader and will be charged a fraction of the cost of the major card processing companies, without any hidden charges. It seems like Bling Nation is on its way, look for it soon… at a bagel shop near you.

For more information regarding retailers and consumers, or to find locations near you, please visit  www.blingnation.com

Although I hope this doesn't mean that soon, every time I lose my phone I've lost my wallet too…

New Spark Nano Helps You Find Jesus this Holiday Season

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 08:34 PM PST

I love this time of year, I love the decorations, the lights, the  hustle and bustle of the city. But I also know that even during this most wonderful time, there are Scrooges everywhere, just looking for an opportunity to steal my stuff.

Humbug!

The Grinch should think twice this year before trying to steal Christmas, thanks to high-tech, folks can protect their holiday paraphernalia from would be crooks using The Spark Nano, the worlds smallest GPS tracker. Churches and small businesses in my area are currently using these devices installed in their Nativity scenes to protect Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the 3 wise men, from wise guys, who think stealing characters from a nativity scene is a good time.

The Spark Nano is self-contained and requires no external connections or antennas, which means you can track a vehicle, a person or anything you like, completely covertly. So when Christmas is over, you can put it your Spark Nano right back to work in your teenagers car, your husbands briefcase or on your child’s backpack.

The device uses satellite signals to pinpoint its location anywhere in the world, so owners can then use cell phones or computer browsers to track not only its location, but where it’s been since it was taken.

I wouldn't want to be the one caught red handed having stolen baby Jesus at Christmas. What would Santa say?

The Spark Nano GPS Tracker is available starting at $199.95 from www.skymall.com

Welcome to the age of the Onaroo PBA, or Personal Baby Assistant

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 05:34 PM PST

As someone who has had three kids, I know how tough it can be to keep things in order. This is where the Onaroo PBA comes in.

This Personal Baby Assistant is a data gathering device that keeps track of everything that new parents easily lose track of. It is designed to sync to a PC via USB cable (no wireless functionality yet) and uploads all the data to the PBA Online website, so you can officially chart your child’s progress.

So for all those people that need a chart to document their reality, you will be able to check on your newborn son or daughter’s sleep schedule, bottle feeding, breast pumping, diapers, temperature, medicine, and even growth.

The PBA also works as a kind of alarm system. Not the type that can protect your home, but the type that has timers and alarms that are programmed to go off at important times like feeding. It can even be put on the belt and set to vibrate at the aforementioned important times.

The Onaroo PBA costs about $49.95, and all of the online services are free. Some of you might think that could be a little expensive, as my Source was quite quick to point out that much of what the PBA does could be accomplished by an iPhone App.
