LevelUp unveils storage solution for Rock Band

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:01 PM PST

When it comes to video game accessories, you would do best to stick to a tried and tested name. After all, it simply doesn’t make any sense not to rely on a trusted name especially when plenty of third party manufacturers come out with sub-par offerings of their own. At first, it might seem as though those were bargains of the month, since they work just as well as the real thing, but after a while, the difference in quality becomes rather stark. You will find that the original hasn’t break break down yet even though you’ve had hundreds of hours of gaming, while the cheaper purchases would have been broken or spoilt by then.

Having said that, proper storage of your video game peripherals is also another important aspect. LevelUp knows this, which is why they have unveiled a storage solution for Rock Band, aptly known as the Rock Band Ottoman.

Sure, it looks real easy to be a rock star on paper, as all you need to do is get smashed and snort lines of white powder to get “inspired” to write songs and scream your lungs out on stage, while groupies fling their panties at you with but a look. Little do people know that being a rock star requires much more than that – we’re talking about having a bunch of loose gear and accessories as well, and even if you’re not the real deal but an actual Rock Band fan, all that gear and accessories can quickly add up to the home’s clutter, making band practice a whole lot less fun. LevelUp’s solution would be the Rock Band Ottoman, where it is made out of solid wood and a sleek leather-like exterior, making it durable enough to withstand the most destructive performer.

Features of the Rock Band Ottoman include fitted drum stick loops, fitted side accessory pockets, and a Velcro guitar loops to keep your gear secure. You are able to comfortably fit two axes, one drum set, one microphone, and one drumstick set. Not only that, LevelUp has included a safety hinge lid and side handles for easy lifting just in case you decide to hold a gig at your friend's house. The "Skull and Snakes" version is selling online for $179.00, while the "Back in Black" version is going for $89.99.

PeeWee PC unveils Pivot 2.0

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:50 PM PST

They say that kids learn through examples, and most of the time, whatever they pick up, they do so from their parents. If you’re a parent, chances are you know what I’m talking about – you can tell them a hundred times not to eat cookies before dinner, but if you do so yourself, expect to have a battle royale of wits on your hands since what you say don’t jive with what you do. Well, having said that, if you are a business person who totes around your laptop wherever you go, chances are little Johnny would also want a laptop of his own so that he can follow dad/mom.

Of course, you know that getting him an actual laptop would be a waste of money since he doesn’t really know how to make use of it to the fullest at that tender age, not to mention the high chances of him spoiling it with his rough behavior as expected from kids his age. What’re you going to do to get rid of that tinge of guilt? Enter the PeeWee PC Pivot 2.0, of course.

PeeWee PC is currently the leading manufacturer of computer products and accessories for kids, and they have recently announced the availability of the new PeeWee Pivot 2.0 laptop. Not only is it able to compute and run basic programs thanks to an Intel Atom N450 processor and Windows 7 as the operating system of choice, this is also a rugged, durable and lightweight (3.7lbs) laptop that boasts a 180° rotating touch screen tablet and camera coupled with 15 educational games to help you get started right out of the box. Nice to see the retractable carrying handle included for easy transportation, and the water resistant keyboard is definitely more than welcomed.

On the outside, you would find a durable exterior and superior security protection. Made out of a sturdy plastic shell, the Pivot 2.0 also sports rubber slip-resistant grips and a water resistant keyboard as mentioned earlier, making it more than capable of withstanding the demands and rigors of every day use while at school, home or in the car.

PeeWee Patrol and Privacy security suites limit how much time children spend browsing and gaming, blocks inappropriate sites and prevents children from changing system systems for added peace of mind for the parents. If you want to keep Johnny happy this Christmas, why not consider the $599 PeeWee Pivot 2.0?

Digital Storm keeps things running nice and cool in your PC

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:43 PM PST

You gotta love a name like Digital Storm – it brings a whole new updated meaning to the traditional word ’storm’, and has long been the predominant name when it comes to computer system integration and engineering. Well, Digital Storm is extremely proud to bring what they deem to be the Formula 1 of high-performance computing – their very own Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System. This new system intends to deliver an unrivalled PC gaming experience which is capable of handling overclocked Intel i7-980X CPUs of up to 4.6GHz, while ensuring the idle processor remains below 0ºC. Now is that a feat worthy of mention?

As you can tell by its name, the Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System will deliver freezing liquid to the CPU, which is more than capable of smothering any heat it encounters. Having been designed and tested over months of research by the industry's most performance focused engineering team, the Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System is not meant for your ordinary computer user, but will instead specifically target enthusiasts and hardcore gamers who have performance and power right at the top of their lists.

Right smack at the core of Sub-Zero would be a series of TEC peltier coolers which function in conjunction with other high-end liquid cooling components. In other times, enthusiasts were relegated to bulky phase change systems in order to achieve radically low temperatures to maximize performance. Well, things have certainly changed with the passage of time, where enthusiasts are able to achieve unmatched overclocking potential with increased reliability since the core of Digital Storm's Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System has no moving parts.

If you’re interested in picking up Digital Storm's Hailstorm gaming PC with the Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled System, all the work has already been done for you, albeit at a price, of course. Prices start from $3,899 and can only go upwards from there, depending on what is the type of configuration that you decide upon. Just like you staying cool under an intense situation in a game, so does your computer with Digital Storm’s help.

Spy Gear Lie Detector Kit, we go fingers-on

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 08:00 AM PST

I have always wondered how accurate lie detectors really are. I mean, if they worked all the time, it would certainly solve a lot of legal cases in a hurry.

I can honestly say that I was not able to get the Spy Gear Lie Detector Kit to work perfectly, but it isn’t really designed to work 100 percent of the time, because it is a toy.

Apparently, it is designed to “Ask tough questions to really make ‘em squirm. The indicator lights light up when your suspect isn’t telling the truth. Busted!” Yes, this is the toy that can prevent your kids from torturing one another the next time they are playing Jack Bauer on 24. Now they can pretend they are Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro’s character from Meet The Parents).

I had a chance to try it out for myself, and when my son and I were playing with it, he just couldn’t break me. Of course, my son is six years old, and the deliberate lies that we were telling were only sometimes getting a positive reading.

Apparently, the number of lights on this thing signifies the chance that your last statement was a lie. Four bright ones means that you are busted! There is even a paper chart thing so you can write on it like the real lie detectors use.

Speaking of pens, the Lie Detector Kit came with an invisible ink pen that showed up under its battery-powered ultraviolet light. It is a nice bonus.

In case you want something to match the Spy Gear Security Scanner for those young ones on your Christmas list, the Lie Detector Kit is probably it. It is available on the Spy Gear website for $24.95.

Formula Rossa Roller Coaster at Ferrari World

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 07:30 AM PST

I report on roller coasters about as much as I ride them, which is hardly ever. The Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit might be most high-tech one, but this Formula Rossa roller coaster in Abu Dhabi is most certainly the world’s fastest.

The Formula Rossa is part of Ferrari World, a theme park in the United Arab Emirates, and the ride reaches a top speed of 149.1 miles per hour.

After the jump, I have included a video of Ferrari Formula 1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa as they are one of the first to try it out. I’m sure that they are used to speed, but you will see that there is a look of terror in their faces.

Apparently, this roller coaster is a “simulation” of the F1 driving experience. It can carry 16 passengers on four cars, and climbs to a maximum height of 171 feet. You will notice it’s opening burst of speed that takes it from 0-100 kilometers per hour in two seconds, you might also notice the sudden drops and sharp turns to take the rider up to 1.7 Gs.

This is yet another reason to visit Dubai. All of the huge buildings and other advancements they have are starting become the stuff of legend amongst techno-junkies here who are stuck on the west side of the world.

Deflexion silicone armor grows hard on impact

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 07:00 AM PST

This next device is known as Deflexion, but it has nothing to do with a game played with lasers that we reported on a while back.

No, Dow Corning created this Deflexion, which is a material made from silicon that has been polymerized into a flexible silicone sheets. The idea is to create some kind of armor that can shift around like clothing in a breathable fashion.

However, if something hard impacts it like a bullet, then all the molecules gang up around that area and instant turn rock solid. They would disperse and absorb the impact, like a bullet-proof vest. I suppose that a bullet proof vest is what you could use this for, but there might be other applications like cases for mobile phones, for instance.

Either way, this Deflexion sounds like something from science-fiction or superhero stories. Sort of like the “memory cloth” that Batman uses in the Christopher Nolan movies to make his cape go instantly as stiff as a hang-glider. I believe that the first issue of Ultimate Iron Man contained a scene where a character is coated with some blue goo that can perfectly absorb the hit of a baseball bat.

I can’t help but wonder if a hit on a suit of Deflexion “armor” would cause it to stay stiff, permanently. That could be problematic if you were hit on all sides by machine-gun fire. This is one of the bugs that will have to be worked out if we ever see a working prototype. It looks like it is in the drawing board stage for now.
