Hard Candy Cotton Candy Maker

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 05:20 PM PDT

If you’re craving cotton candy in December you’re pretty much out of luck, that is unless there happens to be a circus in your area.  Otherwise, you’ll have to wait until it warms up again for the festivals and fairs to show up again.  Unless you happen to purchase yourself your own cotton candy machine.  Then you can have it whenever you want without leaving the comfort of your home.

You just pick out some sugar or sugar-free hard candy and this will turn it into some fluffy cotton candy.  It features a translucent bowl so that you can watch it be created.  It’s entertainment and nourishment in one simple gadget.  Along with the candy maker you’ll get 2 plastic cones to put the cotton candy on.  You can purchase one of these through Best Buy for $49.99.

Doctor Who Zip Case with Stylus

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 04:57 PM PDT

Although the Dr. Who DS case is a little over the top for my tastes, the sonic screwdriver stylus would be a whole lot of fun.  This full kit will be plenty to fill your Dr. Who obsession.  Of course it’s not like you actually get to pick which Dr. to be featured on the case, but at least the general theme is right.

These will fit the regularly sized DS units and give your DS that sci-fi touch that it truly needs.  These will be shipped out October 29th, but you can go ahead and pre-order it now.  They’re up for grabs on Amazon UK, but it doesn’t look like this is making it to the US just yet.  To order it it’ll cost you £14.99 or about $24.

Lum Smoke Detector with emergency lighting

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 03:59 PM PDT

Smoke alarms are such a normal sight that you don’t even notice them hanging from walls and ceilings anymore.  However, no one can ever claim that they’re an attractive addition to your home, they just happen to be incredibly useful.  This smoke alarm design is even more useful, plus it could actually be somewhat hidden from sight.

The Lum screws into your light socket on any lamp or hanging light and the bulb screws into the Lum.  The smoke detector draws energy from the light when the smoke alarm is going off and will even power the light bulb for some emergency lighting.  This design by Arthur Brault would be a nice solution so that you don’t have quite so many gadgets hanging from your ceiling.  Since it is a concept you will have to wait a bit before it ever becomes a real product.

Motorola Citrus announced at CTIA Fall 2010

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 12:58 PM PDT

We have already reported on the supposed “BlackBerry killer” Motorola Droid Pro, and Motorola is pouring out many phones at CTIA Fall 2010 this week.

One of these is the Citrus, this phone is powered by Android 2.1, and there isn’t any word on a Froyo (Android 2.2) update. The Citrus has a curved design as well as an “easy-to-use on-screen QWERTY keyboard” on a full capacitive touchscreen display for “fluid flick, swipe, and pinch-to-zoom navigation”.

Also on deck is BACKTRACK, a touch panel located in back of the device which lets users navigate and scroll through e-mails, home screens, websites, as well as music, without even obstructing the display.

Another feature is the seven home screen panels, which can be arranged for many varities of shortcuts, applications, and widgets.

Apparently, the Citrus is also good for the environment, as the housing is 25 percent post-consumer recycled plastic, and certified CarbonFree through and alliance with Carbonfund.org, as well as being PVC and BFR free. Even the packaging is 80 percent post-consumer recycled paper, and the user manual 100 percent recycled paper with soy-based ink.

You should be able to purchase the Citrus sometime in Q4 from Verizon Wireless, but we have received no word on a price as yet.

Panasonic’s new digital photo frame has iPod/iPhone dock

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 12:26 PM PDT

Even though I am spending the rest of this week at CTIA Fall 2010 in San Francisco, I am getting the feeling that CEATEC in Japan is where it’s at this week.

Take this particular prototype of the MW-20, a digital picture frame that Panasonic put on display. Not only can the 9-inch frame display pictures via SD card or 2GB internal memory, but it also has an integrated iPod/iPhone dock.

So, if you want to get all your photos from your favorite iDevice, it is as easy as docking it. You can even use the frame’s internal stereo speakers to play your favorite tunes as well.

I have heard that the digital picture frame can also play well with a Lumix camera, and it even has a function that will group photos by style. I’m not certain what that means, or how in the world it would even define style. I suppose I’ll leave defining style to fashion designers and this picture frame, then.

The word is that the Panasonic MW-20 digital picture frame should be out sometime during the holidays, for a price of about $249. That is pretty expensive for a digital picture frame, but not many I know feature an iPod/iPhone dock. In all honesty, I’m surprised that isn’t a standard feature.

Remote Visual Doorbell Clock

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 06:30 AM PDT

Hmm, a doorbell clock doesn’t exactly ring a bell in our books (pun not intended), but we guess there was enough research done to justify the existence of the Remote Visual Doorbell Clock. What does this $39.98 device do anyways? Regardless of whether it is powered by either an AC adapter or a quartet of AAA batteries, it will provide additional notice whenever someone is at your door step (an alert watchdog would do equally well, but at least you don’t have to clean up after the clock). Each time the doorbell is pressed, the clock will play one out of 32 selectable tunes, lighting up and flashing crazily away for 10 seconds to boot just in case it is late into the night and you are listening to your favorite relaxation tunes with a pair of noise-isolation earphones. Works great as long as you remain within a 50 foot radius from the doorbell.

Best Countertop Ice Maker

Posted: 06 Oct 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Want to throw a party for your family and friends, and don’t want to take any chances that you might actually run out of ice that night simply because you took the number of drinkers at your place for granted? Instead of being embarassed that there isn’t going to be enough ice to go around, why not pick up the Best Countertop Ice Maker instead? This device is capable of making the most ice in the least amount of time during testing, churning out 18 1/2 lbs. of ice in eight hours. That might not sound like much, but it is 56% more than a lesser model, while all it takes to cough up a 12-cube batch is 8 minutes. It is also one of the quieter models out there in the market, making a mere 24.8 decibels of noise when in action. Using it is more or less dummy proof as well, since all you need to do is fill it up with water, choose the ice cube size and press the button to get going. Capable of freezing ice cubes in three different sizes, it will cost $249.95 to reside in your kitchen.

Western Digital offers new My Passport Essential portable hard drive and two other models

Western Digital is a name that is synonymous when it comes to storage space, and this time around the company intends to excite the market with three more models – we’re looking at the My Passport Essential portable hard drive, the My Passport Essential SE portable hard drive and My Book Essential external hard drive. All three of these will come in a range of capacities to suit your needs and budget, but what makes it all the more special would be all of them boasting lightning-fast USB 3.0 connectivity to keep up with the times. Not only that, Western Digital intends to make its mark on the market with the highest industry capacity where the My Book Essential drive is concerned, sporting up to 3TB of storage space. Each purchase will come equipped with WD SmartWare visual backup software that is capable of delivering automatic, continuous backup, where you are able to enjoy the additional space required to store or back up all of your digital memories including high-resolution photos and videos, music and other critical files, without missing a beat. Boasting a data transfer speed of up to 5Gb/s, this translates to a two-hour HD video being transferred within a mere 3 minutes – that’s shaving off 10 minutes in comparison to a USB 2.0 port transfer.

The My Passport Essential is WD’s smallest portable drive, where it will come in a 500 GB capacity as well as five fun colors to choose from including Midnight Black, Cool Silver, Real Red, Pacific Blue and Arctic White. As for the My Passport Essential SE, it will be available in 750GB and 1TB, arriving in stylish black, silver, metallic blue and metallic red colors. Instant Impresario Guitar

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 09:54 PM PDT

Love those romantic comedies that see the main character serenade the love of his life with a guitar, only to win her heart in the end? Does this mean that all is lost if you do not have the ability to let your fingers dance across the strings of a guitar? Perhaps not, as there is help in the form of the Instant Impresario Guitar, where this device will target those who practically have no previous guitar experience whatsoever, offering the instant gratification of playing chords without months of practice. It comes in the same form factor as a hollow-body acoustic guitar, featuring half a dozen strings which can be strummed or individually plucked with the right hand like a normal guitar. As for your left hand, it will press a chord button along the fingerboard. You will be able to play up to 24 different chords thanks to the unique button combinations, while touch-sensitve pads located above and below the strings will be able to deliver additional muting and octave control. Twelve built-in arpeggio settings enable one to enjoy individual string control when in “lead guitar” mode. Each $599.95 purchase comes with four demonstration songs to get you started right out of the box, and while the integrated 1 1/2-watt speaker produces clear notes and chords, it definitely won’t bring the house down. You can choose to have it powered by eight AA batteries if you want to serenade Juliet outside of her house window, otherwise sit in your living room and let the AC adapter provide the required juice.

T-Mobile announces new myTouch smartphone

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 09:43 PM PDT

T-Mobile has a spanking new myTouch smartphone for the masses, where it will play nice with T-Mobile’s equally new and super-fast HSPA+ mobile broadband network. It was constructed to cater for families, where one is able to hold spontaneous face-to-face conversations thanks to the wonders of Video Chat and the ability to reach 4G speeds on T-Mobile's new network. It is also interesting to note that T-Mobile’s 4G network is available in more cities across the country than any other network. Video Chat on the new myTouch will work not only on a Wi-Fi connection unlike the iPhone 4, and the myTouch's front-facing camera can work via Yahoo! Messenger or QIK. Heck, you can even leave Video Mail using QIK whenever someone is not around to pick up your call.

Not only that, the new myTouch also makes for a decent camcorder, since it can record in high-definition (HD) to help it stay on par with other handheld camcorders such as the Flip HD from Cisco. With Screen Share, customers are now able to share or broadcast HD video and pictures which they've captured. Using but a few touches of the screen, customers are able to share their photo albums, videos and movies wirelessly as long as there is a compatible HDTV or other DLNA device around. The new handset will also boast a trio of exclusive myTouch features, including Genius Button, powered by Dragon Dictation from Nuance that allows customers call, text, e-mail or access the internet with a simple voice command; Faves Gallery, which offers shortcuts to one's most-contacted family and friends; and myModes, which creates customized home screens for work and home.

Other hardware specifications include a brilliant 3.8-inch WVGA touch-screen display with virtual keyboard and Swype for easy text input, a zippy second-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz MSM8255 processor, a 5-megapixel camera, a preinstalled 8GB microSD memory card, and an integrated media player. Good thing it runs on the latest Android 2.2 operating system which will also open up the gateway to over 80,000 applications on Android Market to keep you occupied at all times.

Razer to launch new suite of Naga Special Edition gaming mice

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 09:25 PM PDT

There is nothing quite like injecting fresh interest into a particular hardware line by coming up with limited or special editions, and Nintendo has pulled that off to great effect with so many different design iterations of the Nintendo DS line, featuring different decals on the outside as well as a myriad of colors which appeal to a wide range of audience. Razer has taken a leaf out of Nintendo’s book, although Razer will not release that many special editions with their new suite of Razer Naga Special Edition gaming mice in the form of the Razer Naga Maelstrom Special Edition and the Razer Naga Molten Special Edition. We will take a closer look at them later in the extended post.

This move came about thanks to the phenomenal response which Razer received for the Razer Naga, according to the hardware manufacturer themselves. This has resulted in the creation of two collectible versions specially made for their fans, where they will boast the same functionality of full button remapping and macro capabilities of the original Razer Naga albeit with a rejuvenated and aesthetic design for a more immersive MMO gaming experience.

Razer’s Maelstrom Special Edition will enable MMO gamers to dive straight into the heart of the vortex, where it will sport a similar 17 MMO-optimized buttons with unprecedented macro functionality, boasting a whirlpool of entrancing blue light that emanates from its swirling core to further mesmerize whoever looks at it. As for the Molten Special Edition, it will instead glow in a wicked and fiery red hue, offering lava-red fissures that cuts a jagged path across the mouse.

Either way, they will still cost $79.99 a pop, and if you live across the pond, it will also retail for an equivalent amount except in Euros. This means you would be better off purchasing one Stateside as after going through the exchange rate, those in Europe will have to fork out more dough for it. Expect them to be out later this November.
