Asus Eee PC 900A connected to this Volvo Posted: 03 Sep 2010 05:38 PM PDT This device on this car is probably the future of auto security as we know it. Someone has gone to the trouble of installing an Eee PC 900A into the dash of this Volvo, and has gone to even more trouble to make the computer part of the automobile’s systems. Not only does it have two pressure sesnors for boost and vacuum, but the computer displays the RPM, O2, and the exhaust directly. By the way, the user enters in a PIN number in order to start it. I have included a video of it that you can see after the jump. Granted, the camera movement is shaky, and the narration reminds me of the show Dexter, but I like what he has done here. In fact, I take back the Dexter comment, as you are no serial killer, but a complete genius. I think we all know that a PIN number could really do a lot to prevent car theft. However, in the photo, it appears to be a woman doing some sort of strip tease. That is probably going to lead to an accident. Well, we all know that cars and computers are going to get more and more “in tune” with each other. This particular DIY device is definitely the way to go, and I hope not to hear about any “surfing the net while driving” accidents. MoMA presents a minimalist Chess set Posted: 03 Sep 2010 05:06 PM PDT This is the Modern Chess Set, and, as you can see in this illustration, this Chess set is able to fit very compactly in this tiny box. You will notice the pawns are these little cubes that fit together well. The rooks are a little larger and do the same thing. The bishops and knights have some sort of symmetry, to create a rectangular solid, I like how the king and queen dovetail together, as it is rather poetic, in a Freudian way. I am assuming that the chess board is not there, but it looks like it would fold up and fit inside this box. In fact, I just checked my Source, and there is no board included. I’m sure you have probably seen this on the photo, but the pieces are made of maple or cherry wood. Remember that white goes first. You should be able to get it at the MoMA store for about $65. I suppose that is a big price to pay for a chess set. Not only that, it doesn’t look these pieces are made of valuable metals or stones. Yeah, this pure wooden minimalism. I suppose that if you were cross Jenga with chess, this is what you would get. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Samsung Galaxy Tab is first DivX certified tablet Posted: 03 Sep 2010 04:56 PM PDT
The Samsung Galaxy Tab will arrive on European doorsteps later this month, where it will hit their friends across the Atlantic as well as select countries in Asia after that. For those who are not in the know, the Samsung Galaxy Tab will feature a generous 7-inch TFT display that is capable of delivering an unrivaled screen quality for a better viewing experience. It is pretty lightweight as well, tipping the scales at just 0.84 pounds (380g), where you have a choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. Just in case that is not enough, you can always expand that further by another 32GB thanks to its microSD memory card slot. The Samsung Galaxy Tab will come with Samsung’s own TouchWIZ user interface, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS support, rear and front facing cameras and doubles up as a cellphone as well. We don’t suppose considering the fact that it runs on Android, this could very well be a smartphone (albeit a very large one). Take that, iPad! Since it will be Android-powered, the Galaxy Tab can access various applications from Android Market where applicable. Hopefully the battery life of this thing is going to last at decent levels, since it would definitely be a bummer to view your favorite movie halfway only to have it die on you. LaCie MosKeyto USB flash drive is super small Posted: 03 Sep 2010 04:40 PM PDT USB flash drives are dime a dozen, and we know that most of you already own more USB flash drives than you care via trade shows and conventions. Well, the company known as LaCie who has had plenty of experience when it comes to storage devices such as external hard drives has recently unveiled their latest model where USB flash drives are concerned – we’re talking about the LaCie MosKeyto. Nice word play on the mosquito bit, LaCie. This will be a super small flash drive that is anything but pesky, and it won’t carry diseases at all – only important data files. LaCie hopes that their MosKeyto will be able to up the ante for power, portability and ease of use. Measuring less than 20mm while tipping the scales at 10 grams, the MosKeyto is one of the smallest USB flash drives that you can find in the market at the moment. After all, it will come in a variety of capacities, maxing out at 16GB (yeah, that’s not much by today’s standards but then again it is restricted by its size). Most folks will probably lift an eyebrow or two when you tell them that it totes 16GB worth of data within considering the size of this thing. Even better is the fact that the MosKeyto looks even non-existent whenever it is plugged into your computer’s USB port, and you can travel with it plugged in even when your notebook is in a protective sleeve or briefcase. After all, it lies flush against your notebook, so there is no worry about the port being affected in any way should the drive be knocked around or bumped. Another advantage would be not losing it at all. The LaCie MosKeyto comes in a sleek black plastic build that lends an air of seriousness, and will also be equipped with a durable nylon strap to attach to an accessible key ring while a cap helps protect its USB connector. This means you will have nothing to worry about at all, as it blends into the background perfectly. Apart from that, LaCie will also integrate an additional 4GB secure online storage from Wuala into the MosKeyto, to make storage a whole lot more convenient. It will play nice with Windows, Mac and Linux platforms, and come in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB capacities with prices starting from $17.99 upwards. Keychain Retro LED Camera with sound Posted: 03 Sep 2010 03:30 PM PDT People are always purchasing those silly little keychain lights. Most of the time they could barely be described as attractive or interesting. If you’re going to carry it as a keychain it should have a little personality. If you’re a big time photography or old camera lover, then this keychain could do double duty for you. It’ll show off your favorite hobby and the flash doubles as a handy little flashlight. Like most keychain flashlights, it isn’t going to have a ton of light. It will at least help you find where to insert your key when you’re fumbling in the dark though. To work the light there is just one press button that will kick it on and even make a shutter sound when it’s pressed. To keep it on you’ll have to hold down on that button. You can purchase one of these for $8 through Gadget Brando. Source: GeekAlerts Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Hunter Fanaway Retractable Fan Posted: 03 Sep 2010 02:30 PM PDT Now this is the way to do it if you’re not big on the look of ceiling fans. Instead of spending a fortune on one just to get a trendy one, spend a fortune on one that disappears. Sure, the light stays right there, but those fan blades tuck away until you’re ready to use them again. With this you’re never stuck having a fan around at all times when you don’t need it. The great thing is that even when the fan is running, the blades are completely clear. With the blades out, they’re not going to draw a whole lot of attention to themselves. It doesn’t take a lot to bring those blades out either, it just uses a little centrifugal force. This features things like brushed chrome, frosted white glass and even a remote control. It is a bit expensive though. You can purchase it for $559 through Hunter. Source: OhGizmo Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Welcome to the Dollhouse (actually, it’s a real house) Posted: 03 Sep 2010 02:25 PM PDT I realize that this certainly looks like a real dollhouse. After all, it has no outside wall on one side, and has pastel colored wallpaper. This is actually an old farm house on the Canadian tundra, and it has been artistically remade so the whole north facade was torn out, and replaced with plexiglass. Apparently, the artist/builder Heather Benning loved this old farm house and preserve it in its original condition. After all, if you live out in the country, then you know that there is never a shortage of old, dilapidated farm houses on the plain. In all honesty, I am glad that Ms. Benning got to fixing up this barn before it falls over. I didn’t think that this was a doll’s house when I first saw this thing, but I actually thought that it was one of those houses like the Big Brother Concept house. That is, some sort of giant-sized place where everyone can see what you are doing, and you have absolutely no privacy. I suppose it would be terrific for filming a reality show like Big Brother. You would probably only need one camera and one of those crane mounts. You might want to put mics all over the place for the sound. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Golden Robot USB Drive looks familiar… Posted: 03 Sep 2010 01:38 PM PDT It’s funny how you can see something and it just so strongly reminds you of something else you’ve seen before, like this very subtle Golden Robot USB Drive that I just can’t seem to put my finger on. Every time I glance at it I just hear this annoying voice yammering off a bunch of ridiculous survival statistics. It’s just the strangest reaction. Clearly this robot is nothing more than a gold robot and that’s it. Alright, so it’s obvious they were just trying to dodge having to give George Lucas some royalties by not coming out and calling this robot C-3PO. What’s odd is that this is actually a little nicer than some of the C-3PO toys I’ve spotted. By just skipping out on the facial features it makes this one look a little more well made. A lot of times if you don’t think you can do something right, by just skipping that entirely it makes things look a whole lot less cheesy. You can pick up the 4GB USB drive for $25 through Gadget4all.
