C-3PO Backpack

Posted: 14 May 2010 02:19 PM PDT

A while ago, ThinkGeek had a Tauntaun Sleeping Bag that was originally a joke, but ended up being an actual product on their site.

This is a product on the same vein, also inspired by The Empire Strikes Back. It is a backpack with C-3PO in it. It is just like the scene where Threepio is blasted to bits, and has to spend most of the rest of film in a backpack on Chewbacca’s back.

In this case, this is a hollowed out C-3PO that you can store stuff in. For example, you can shove an iPad in there.

This is a licensed Lucasfilm collectable, but in this post Star Wars age, what cheezy piece of merchandise isn’t these days?

You will note how you can take C-3PO out, and I am assuming put him together without the Wookee or droid.

Is it just me, or does this remind me of a blow-up doll. Perhaps an ugly blow up doll. Perhaps if the lady who was given the golden skin makeover in GoldFinger was an ugly blow-up doll, this would be it.

Well, you should be able to get this on the ThinkGeek website here for a price of about $59.99.

D-BOX in a Megaplex 20

Posted: 14 May 2010 01:54 PM PDT

During CES 2009, I had a chance to try out a D-BOX seat, and I was completely blown away.

The seat moved with the film. Speakers were mounted so the sound was life-like. It was quite an experience, and I wanted one of these at home.

It would appear that D-BOX Technologies is going to have a whole theater full of these seats with the Megaplex 20 in a District in South Jordan.

It will be the first movie theater to equip an auditorium with 28 D-BOX MFX seats. That is about four rows, and that will make them the most coveted seats in the house.

The theater plans on being open just in time for Walk Disney’s summer blockbuster The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Something tells me that it will certainly be quite an experience with these seats.

Personally, this theater is a step in the right direction, and I look forward to a day when every theater has these types of seats. Just think of all the great action that will be in the theaters then. With a little 3D, walking in the theater would be like walking into another world.

Of course, that would probably raise ticket prices, and make it hard to non-action oriented films to be seen in the theater. Yeah, the D-BOX could change the industry as we know it.

Teddy Bear Robot from Fujitsu

Posted: 14 May 2010 01:26 PM PDT

Fujitsu is very proud of their newest Teddy Bears, and these are certainly not like any Teddy Bears I know. Man, even Teddy Ruxpin would kill himself if he were still alive today.

Teddy Ruxpin was this bear that was able to talk when you put cassette tapes in his back, for those who don’t remember the eighties. The Fujitsu Teddy Bear Robot has much more than that, as it has 13 sensors all over its body.

I have heard that it can do about 300 behaviors. For example, if you smile at it, the nose-mounted camera will detect it, and the bear will smile back. That’s right, it has a camera mounted in its nose. Makes your nanny-cam look like child’s play, doesn’t it?

My Source barely had any information on this, and it looks more like experimental tech rather than something with a projected release date or price.

I can tell you what it reminds me of: A.I.. Yes, I realize that some of you have almost forgotten about this Spielberg flick with all the robots, but the kid robot main character had a teddy bear toy that could walk and talk. Perhaps that film portrays the model of the Fujitsu Teddy Bear of the future.

The Aviator Headphones

Posted: 14 May 2010 12:00 PM PDT

Skullcandy is usually a line that sticks with the rocker and punk types of gadgets.  That’s by no means a bad thing, but these Aviator Headphones are more likely to appeal to a broader crowd.  Their current audience will still like these, but it might pull in a few new fans to the Skullcandy line.  Although these aren’t technically done solely by Skullcandy, actually they teamed up with Roc Nation to get these new sets.

Despite appearing slightly bulky, these are a bit more portable than they appear.  They fold up to make them a bit smaller and easier to carry around.  The headphones themselves feature a 20-20kHz frequency response, 65Ohms impedance, 40mW of input power, 100mW of output and a 3.5mm gold plated plug.  The headphones aren’t out just yet, they’ll be showing up sometime in June.

Decorate Your Keyboard With Decals

Posted: 14 May 2010 11:00 AM PDT

Most people put some kind of skin on the outside of their laptop, making it much more original and personal.  Well now you can take things another step further and decorate the inside as well.  There are several attractive keyboards available, so I could see many being interested in making their current keyboard a little more attractive on their laptop.

This one is a rainbow print that’ll make you look like a Skittles addict.  The stickers are made by special material-Avery MPI.  If you get bored of them, you can always peel them off and go back to the original look.  These are of course made specifically for a MacBook, so those of you with other laptops will probably have a harder time getting something like this.  For those that do have the necessary hardware it will cost you $14.99 through Etsy.

Black & Decker Alligator Lopper

Posted: 14 May 2010 09:57 AM PDT

On occasion there is a tool that you really don’t absolutely need, but could still be justifiably useful.  Sure, you probably mostly want it because it’s awesome, but it still could be very useful.  It has slightly more versatility than a chain saw, it can do some of the things you’d do with a chainsaw and hedge clippers.  Plus, it’s a whole lot tougher looking than a set of hedge clippers.

The cut capacity is up to 4 inches and has a 4.5 amp motor.  The clamping jaws make cutting through branches fast and easy.  They’re like a giant pair of scissors, they’re just a whole lot meaner.  It appears that this needs to be plugged in, but I really can’t say for sure.  It would be more convenient if you didn’t always have to deal with a cord, but it’s not too bad of a deal either way.  You can pick up the Alligator Lopper for a little over $100.

Lighted Safety Umbrella

Posted: 14 May 2010 06:00 AM PDT

If you happen to live in an area where more than half the days throughout the year has some rain, then we would strongly advise you to pick up the Lighted Safety Umbrella. Sounds pretty nifty since it would go a long way in helping you spot any gaping holes on the road by lighting the path around you thanks to 3M reflective material and a “6V” Krypton bulb which will cast a 6' circle of light when illuminated. Not only does it make it easier to move around while wearing this when it pours, it also increases your visibility to other road users. Meant to withstand strong winds and gusts without suffering from any damage, the Lighted Safety Umbrella will retail for $29.95 where it ships with a spare bulb just in case something awry happens.

IntensaFIRE rapid-fire device now arrives on the PS3

Posted: 14 May 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Do you have a great love for gaming, that you would do everything in your power (and budget) to make sure that you are able to come up with the best performance possible at all times? For folks who have the dough to spare, it doesn’t really matter since all the latest hardware releases can be purchased off the shelf without batting an eyelid, but if you are a gamer who is on a rather tight budget, preferring to max out your gaming skills with whatever hardware that you have at the moment, then you might want to check out the IntensaFIRE rapid-fire device for the PS3 (it is already available for the Xbox 360) wireless controller. Good thing this after market gaming controller upgrade kit does not require any form of rocket science for you to figure it out – in fact, it is pretty accessible and easy to fix that if you already know how to use a screwdriver, you’ve more or less completed half the journey.

According to Coy Christmas, President of BGRMods, “We saw a need in the gaming market which inspired the creation of the IntensaFIRE for Xbox and we are excited to bring the same level of gaming to PS3 users. Console and accessory personalization is a large part of the gaming world. The problem was that gamers buy kits for their controllers only to find out they were too complex to assemble themselves. So we had our engineering team to create an engineering marvel, and get a product to the gamers that eliminates the technical curve. The PlayStation 3 version of the IntensaFIRE is even easier to install. It just clicks into place. No glue. No solder.”

No glue and soldering involved? Sounds like our cup of tea, as this 9/16″x 9/16″ product is ready to be introduced to the market at $69.95 a pop, whereas its rivals in the market is going for a considerably higher sum at $199 apiece. The IntensaFIRE will modify the PlayStation 3 dual shock 3 wireless controller by turning it into a rapid fire controller. Strange how previous controllers of yore came with a turbo button as default, but how things have changed since then! Among the benefits of this include Rapid-fire R1, R2, L1 and the “X” button, along with dual-rapid fire and 8-mode sleeper. It will play nice with all PS3 controllers, where it is a snap to install while featuring a 3-customizable user programmer mode.

Sony unveils limited edition WALKMAN W252 to celebrate Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Posted: 14 May 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Sony has decided to celebrate the launch of the latest Metal Gear Solid title in the series from Konami, Peace Walker, by introducing a limited edition WALKMAN W252. You know what they say, if it is good enough for Solid Snake, it ought to be good enough for plebians like me. Bad jokes aside, here’s a run down on what this limited edition digital audio player offers, where this wearable MP3 player is water resistant to make it more than a decent gym buddy as you rack up the miles on the treadmill, while folks who prefer to run outdoors regardless of rain or shine will definitely appreciate its water resistant capability, although you might want to be more careful with it since dropping it by accident on the grass could prove rather hard to find unlike Apple’s brightly colored iPod nanos, as the WALKMAN W252 comes in a special camouflage finish.

Each purchase will come with half a dozen pre-installed music tracks from the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker soundtrack, complete with special in-carton code which unlocks original designed characters that you cannot get anywhere else. Something tells us that these codes will hit the Internet forums in a short time after the WALKMAN’s release, so not everyone will need to purchase it before getting hold of such codes on the Internet. Apart from that, folks who pick up the game for their PSP or PSP Go will be able to check out iconic past WALKMAN models in the game itself, where they appear as collectible items to add some spice to the title.

The WALKMAN W252 was specially designed to cater to folks who lead active lifestyles these days, being the first wire-free MP3 player from Sony which is capable of resisting rain splashes or the sweat of a gruelling gym session. Once you’re done with your workout, all you need to do is rinse it under the tap, or perhaps just leave it on while you groove to your favorite tunes when taking a shower. With 2GB of storage space, it can hold around 470 songs on average, where its 13.5mm EX Series headphones offer a secure, comfortable fit and clear, powerful WALKMAN sound. You can get 90 minutes of listening time with just a 3-minute charge, while a fully juiced up battery will offer 11 hours of audio playback. There is no word on pricing yet though.

Walk across the water like this

Posted: 13 May 2010 10:21 PM PDT

The first time I saw this image of a man walking on the water, I just assumed it was a special effect.

There is a video of it after the jump, and it’s either a grandiose hoax or the next extreme sport. I can’t help but want to believe that it is the latter.

The video explains that this act of walking across the water is done without divine intervention from Jesus, but a combination of speed, plus water repellent shoes. Yes, apparently water-resistant shoes make some difference, but some of it is the angle that you approach the water.

It looks like every day these people push themselves to go further each time, like the skipping of a stone.

I think they are using the same method of running across the water as The Flash. In the comics, he is able to perform this super-feat, and I always just brushed it off as inferior comic-book physics. Who would have thought that it was rooted in actual fact?

Who also would have thought that people could run on water like this in reality? It really does make you believe in miracles, at least the ones that you can probably explain.

I suppose it won’t be long before one of these guys manages to run across a river or a lake. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of that.

Boeing’s Phantom Ray Unmanned Aircraft

Posted: 13 May 2010 10:00 PM PDT

If you are thinking that this is a stealth fighter, then you would be right.

I mean, it has the traditional Flying Wing shape of stealth fighters like the B-2, only it is white, and not black. What makes this one even more different is that a pilot is completely optional. In fact, there wouldn’t be much room in there for a pilot anyway as this aircraft is only 36 feet long. (I realize that the photo makes it look bigger.)

This is the Phantom Ray, an unmanned airborne system (UAS) by the Boeing company. The engine is hidden way in its fuselage, which makes it difficult to detect, even from infrared devices.

According to the Boeing CEO of Defense, Space and Security, the Phantom Ray will be used for “intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; suppression of enemy air defenses; electronic attack and autonomous aerial refueling — the possibilities are nearly endless.”

The projected top speed is going to be about 614 mph, and I suppose that not having a pilot would not dissuade the builders to get the speed of the Phantom Ray faster than that. The automated system also makes it possible to do maneuvers that would pulp the best of test pilots.

My source doesn’t have any time where this would be completed, and I would have to say that I’m glad that I don’t see any weapons on this guy…yet.

Desktop Donut Factory is Homer Simpson’s Dream Come True

Posted: 13 May 2010 09:36 PM PDT

Homer Simpson is a hard working man. At the plant, he is always at that one station, doing…something.

But occasionally, it takes its toll. Instead of walking out to the breakroom for the donuts that Mr. Burns provides, I’m sure Homer would love to have the Desktop Donut Factory on his desk so he could make and eat donuts at his convenience.

For those who have Homer’s fetish can enjoy this real product from ThinkGeek. It is designed to bake a half-dozen donuts in about 4 minutes.

It comes with a recipe book, and it is compatible with any store-bought doughnut mix. It is safe to use, and has an easy-to-clean non-stick surface.

By the way, the company says that these donuts are “healthier”. However, this is because they are baked, as a opposed to being deep-fried. They warn though that it isn’t healthy to indulge in this “too much of a good thing”.

This device just sounds like it would be in a fat TV cop’s car, doesn’t it? You know, like Chief Wiggum, or something. Then again, I’ve already used The Simpsons as an illustration for this product. But we all know that TV cops just go for donuts. Maybe they could just get a car adapter and have their donuts on the go.

You should be able to get the Mini Donut Factory at the ThinkGeek website for just $19.99.
