Apple iPad gets international release date on May 28th Posted: 07 May 2010 05:45 PM PDT
As for folks who are residing in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore, you will have to wait until July for this device to hit the respective markets, and there is still no official word on local pricing as well as pre-order plans, although Apple isn’t going to leave you hanging high and dry as they will be announcing availability as well as the relevant details for those nine countries at a later date. Guess this is where you learn to exercise patience as a virtue, eh? Just in case you were living under a rock for the past year, the iPad is a device that boasts a much larger display than the iPhone and iPod touch, although it functions pretty much the same way using a similar operating system, letting you connect to your apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. With it, you can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. Catalyst all-in-one cooking solution Posted: 07 May 2010 05:12 PM PDT For some reason, the Catalyst all-in-one reminds me of an overhead projector that I used to have in my high school. Sure, the bulb is a little high, and wide, but that is only because it is a microwave. In all honesty, I don’t see how that bar can hold up all that microwave oven, really. Of course, that isn’t selling point of this Catalyst. Not that this isn’t selling yet, of course. The cooking top or range can split open, revealing a deep fry cooker underneath. Granted, you probably should be cutting down and not increasing your trans-fat content, and my Source has pointed out that a deep fry cooker creates some serious oily vapors. So, if this concept ever becomes a reality, I am not looking forward to the box that it comes in. I mean, there is a lot of negative space on this product. I can just picture all of the styrofoam that would be wasted in this box. This is stuff you have to think about when you have a product like this. Also, you should probably think about how much counter top space that one has to have enough space for a product like this. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Centaurus 2 Solar Vehicle Project Posted: 07 May 2010 04:35 PM PDT I really had no idea that there was a race for solar powered vehicles, but apparently there is a 2010 American Solar Challenge, a 1100 mile race from Tulsa to Chicago. This particular solar-powered car is one of the competitors. It is made by The Solar Vehicle Project team at the University of Minnesota, and it is called the Centaurus 2. You will note the driver of this vehicle, and I can’t tell if he (I’m assuming it is a he) is off center or not. It might just be the angle of the shot, but he looks a little off-center. It does look like the vehicle has three wheels, though. My source does tell me that this car is about 3 feet tall, 16 feet long, and 6 feet wide. It weighs at 400 pounds, which is pretty light compared to a car. You will note the solar cells on it. I think it’s interesting that they seem to adorn only half the vehicle. I don’t know if that’s part of the design, or perhaps the solar car isn’t finished yet. Too bad that can use the solar cells that can be printed on paper that we reported on yesterday. Too bad someone can’t invent a paint that works like a solar cell when you put a coat of it on anything. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Kites generate power under the sea Posted: 07 May 2010 04:10 PM PDT Sure, we could all use new and energy-efficient power sources, and I’ve got to admire this particular one. Dubbed “Deep Green” by a Swedish start-up company Minestro, it is known as an “underwater kite”. This particular kit doesn’t use the wind, but they are held aloft by “the motion of the ocean”. As for their “strings” they are tied to the seabed, and I’m guessing that what they are attached to must be made of some buoyant material of some sort. These are actually turbines that measure about 12 meters across, and with the seas bounding them up and down in the water, they are able to generate 500 kilowatts of power when they are fully running. Now, here is a question I have: how does one get the power from these kites and wire it to people’s homes. I guess I am assuming that tether is also a wire, and these wires are wired to a place where the power can be stored, and then, of course, transferred to houses. So far, this project is one of those concepts for now. However, the company who is working on these underwater kites have just received 2.5 million in funding. I always wanted to know how much $2.5 million dollars will be as far a electric power is concerned. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. UFO Lamps complete with abducted animal Posted: 07 May 2010 01:44 PM PDT Although these just look like interesting little UFO table lamps, they’re actually much much larger than a table lamp. In reality these things measure a whopping 5 feet and 5 inches tall. Which makes it all the more fun since hidden within that massive beam of light is a poor creature being slowly pulled up to the alien spaceship. It just gets tugged up and down time and time again, with no way to escape that glowing light. The lamp is supposed to be featured at the 2010 Maker Faire that will begin on May 12th. In order to create it, the person used recycled glass tubes, light diffusers and acrylic rings. Within that tube it holds 10 gallons of water. That water uses a 110 volt 20 gallon air pump that creates the bubbles. Those bubbles then carry the trapped cow up and down. The lamp doesn’t use just one form of lighting, it uses CFLs, LEDs and even halogens. Right now all you can really do is drool over the pictures, since these aren’t exactly up for purchase just yet. Double Circulator Fan for hot days Posted: 07 May 2010 01:22 PM PDT Air being well circulated isn’t just a summer problem. It can get that cool air up and moving during the summer, then in the winter it makes sure that the heat doesn’t stay trapped in one area of the house. This fan doesn’t just blow it in one direction though, it goes in two to make sure that the air stays moving. Plus the 2 small fans attached to the base are capable of being shifted and pivoted to get you the angles you really need. Apparently it’s far more healthy to have a nice breeze going throughout the room, rather than having a fan blowing directly on you. After you’ve chosen to put the fan in 2 different directions or a single one, you can then choose the speed of the fan. It’ll actually let you choose between the standard 3 speeds that a lot of fans feature. Unfortunately all that air comes at a price. In order to purchase one of these it’ll cost you € 99.95 or about $127. Source: RGS Conference Calendar – The global conference and expo finder. Posted: 07 May 2010 11:56 AM PDT When you’re drilling into the wall, it’s bound to make a little bit of a mess. It’s not a big deal if you’re drilling holes out in the garage, but when you’re doing them inside the house it usually forces you to clean. Instead of cleaning up the mess after you’re finished, just make sure that the mess never spreads to all of your funiture. This small device collects all of the dust before it has a chance to make a mess. You just attach this directly to the wall that you happen to be drilling. Then if you’ve managed to create too much dust for the little collector to hold, you can detach it from the wall to empty it. Then it can easily be attached once again. Although they don’t exactly mention how it attaches to the wall while it’s vacuuming up all that dust. In order to keep it up and running you’ll just need to pop in the 2 included AA batteries. You can purchase it for $19.95 through Buy Karcher. Source: Bookofjoe Coolest Gadgets UK – For all your UK centric tech and gadget news. Constructionware makes meal times colorful and more fun Posted: 06 May 2010 07:38 PM PDT The Constructionware from ThinkGeek allows your kids to have infinitely more fun as they shove nasty tasting vegetables down their throat, using utenstils that resemble construction vehicles. You get a forklift fork (what else, eh?), a front loader spoon as well as a bulldozer pusher. The plate itself measures up to 9″ in diameter which should be decent sized enough for most meals, and it is nice to know that despite being lightweight, they were made to be rugged in nature and are dishwasher safe. You can also rest easy that all materials used are FDA-approved, PVC free, phthalate free and BPA free. Prices range between $14.99 and $17.99.
