Razer unveils Abyssus Mirror Special Edition gaming mouse

Posted: 04 May 2010 04:41 PM PDT

Razer has made a name for itself when it comes to gaming hardware, since they’re a company that specializes in that particular niche market, and we are stoked to say that they have not failed in that aspect. Of course, I still remember the original Razer Boomslang mouse that came out all those years ago, where it boasted a rather unorthodox form factor that made it quite hard to get used to at first, since the trackball was located not right smack in the center of the mouse’s bottom, but somewhat near where your wrist is. Still, the design was revolutionary back in its day, and the company hasn’t looked back since. Fast forward to today and you have the Razer Abyssus Mirror Special Edition gaming mouse which will merge a sleek and simple design with a high performance 3.5G 3500 dpi infrared sensor to bring you one mean killing machine – on your computer, that is. This is actually a special edition that sports a black chrome mirror finish without losing any of the key features that is available on the original Razer Abyssus.

Why the Razer Abyssus Mirror Special Edition, you ask? Well, it was built with gamers who demand the utmost in form and functionality, while offering indefatigable reliability even under the most intense gameplay conditions. You won’t find the Razer Abyssus Mirror slip out from your hand easily even with a glossy finish, although it will definitely be a firm fingerprint magnet. It comes with a couple of large buttons that have been tuned for maximum tactile feedback, while equipped with Razer's signature Hyperesponse technology. Underneath, Razer decided to include two easily accessible mechanical switches, where one of them is used for on-the-fly dpi switching that lets you choose between 450, 1800, or 3500dpi, while the other adjusts the polling rate, providing instant adjustment from a standard 125hz to 1000hz Ultrapolling.

Expect the following specifications to come with the Razer Abyssus Mirror Special Edition gaming mouse :-

  • High gloss mirror finish
  • 3500dpi Razer Precision 3.5G infrared sensor
  • 1000Hz Ultrapolling/1ms response time
  • Mechanical dpi/polling rate switches
  • On-The-Fly Sensitivity adjustment
  • Always-On mode
  • Ultra-large buttons
  • 16-bit ultra-wide data path
  • 60-120 inches per second and 15g of acceleration
  • Three independently programmable Hyperesponse buttons
  • Ambidextrous design
  • Scroll wheel with 24 individual click positions
  • Zero-acoustic Ultraslick Teflon feet
  • Seven-foot, lightweight, non-tangle cord

It is now readily available Stateside as well as folks living in Europe, retailing for $49.99 and €39.99, respectively.

Jacket has 200 laser diodes

Posted: 04 May 2010 03:15 PM PDT

This gadget proves to me that there are some things that you should do with technology, simply because you can.

Case in point, a jacket that is nothing but “frickin’ lasers”. There are about 200 of these laser diodes that are sewn on the garment itself. There is nothing here that could help feed the world, but this jacket is just “frickin’ cool”.

I suppose the reason why this laser-jacket was made is so that you look like a disco ball without any light to make the myriad reflections. Except that you’re creating dots of red light, not white.

I believe that Bono once wore one of these jackets for one of his concerts, and there was concern that people viewing this jacket could be hurt. After all, there is a reason why you’re not supposed to look at the laser on your CD or DVD player.

It turned out that the lasers on Bono’s jacket were “safe class 2M lasers which have been defocused for additional safety”. I have no idea if the creator, Wie-Chieh Shih, took the same precautions.

But hey, I’m assuming if this guy is intelligent enough to create a jacket with 200 laser diodes, then he is smart enough to figure out how to make the beams not blinding.

I just had an awesome thought, though. Imagine this guy wearing a laser jacket, standing in a House of Mirrors.

German scientists use lasers to create clouds

Posted: 04 May 2010 01:19 PM PDT

This is an interesting device I saw this morning that could easily signal a new era for Mother Earth.

As you can see from the picture, a laser has been used to create clouds. It was actually some German scientists, and they didn’t just point a laser at the sky and make clouds.

No, these guys shot some lasers into a chamber of some water-saturated air at about -24 degrees Celsius.

Okay, I think that we all see the next step here. After all, if we can create clouds, why can’t we create clouds that can do rain? In that case, can’t we create clouds that can do snow?

In fact, let’s just create a system of lasers that will totally control the world’s weather. Man, that sounds like the plot of some cartoonish villain doesn’t it?

Actually, it was the plot of the 1998 TV-to-movie remake of The Avengers. Yeah, Sean Connery had the power to control the weather, and “now is the winter of your discontent”.

Yeah, this weather control could easily be abused by super-villains, but I’m going to say that I would use this to seriously make it rain in the desert.

Of course, I’m not certain what kind of eco-system we would be creating with this type of technology. It’s fun to contemplate, though.

Trekkies Rejoice: The Enterprise, she flies!

Posted: 04 May 2010 11:53 AM PDT

This man here is John Krietzer, not to be confused with John Archer, the captain of the Enterprise from the show Star Trek: Enterprise, for those who didn’t get the reference.

What you are seeing here is a model of the NCC-1701-A, and it can actually fly! I had to see it to beleive it for myself.

Not that I saw it, but I saw this video after the jump, and it doesn’t look like any special effects were used. Granted, I believe the Enterprise can fly without a propeller in back, but this one needs that extra boost that even Scotty couldn’t provide.

I applaud him for managing to get this terrific starship up in the air, and I suppose that he managed to do it with 21st century technology rather than 23rd century.

Yeah, this is the time where all sorts of Star Trek jokes can be made. And believe me, they make several on the video. I suppose that you would be considered a “geek” if you get them. I consider myself a geek because I know that the nacelles are far too big to be an exact model replica of the Starship Enterprise.

Dang, I sound just like the Comic-Book Guy from The Simpsons.

Hohrizontal 51 Speaker Shelf iPod Dock

Posted: 04 May 2010 09:00 AM PDT

Instead of having an iPod dock and speakers that take up shelf space, you should pick one up that actually creates shelf space.  This solid chunk of wood can be hung on your wall to allow your music to play at the perfect height and display all of your favorite books.  Oddly it can even handle a small TV on it, since it’s actually strong enough to support quite a bit of weight.  That is if you trust your wall to keep the shelf upright.

The shelf can actually handle up to 55lbs, which means you can pack a whole lot of stuff on this shelf.  The speakers themselves have a 25WPC amplifier and a frequency range of 50 on up to 25,000Hz.  The shelf also has available connectors for a TV, PC and MP3 player.  The shelf comes in a whole lot of different finishes, that includes high-gloss solid colors or even matte wood veneer.  You can purchase the Hohrizontal 51 shelf for $664.

Game Boy iPad Case

Posted: 04 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT

No gadget is ever quite complete without a Game Boy themed case.  If there isn’t one available, then clearly it’s not an important gadget.  Thankfully the iPad has officially been declared important enough to have a Game Boy case.  Sure, it’s not something that’s exactly massed produced, but at least it can be purchased through the lovable Etsy.

The sleeve is pretty basic, it was all sewn together by a machine.  It’s not something that was hand done.  Even the little buttons were attached by using the sewing machine.  It has all of the fake buttons a Game Boy is expected to have like A and B as well as Start and Select.  It looks nice and squishy on the inside, so it’s likely that this will adequately keep your precious iPad safe.  You can purchase the case for $34 through Etsy.

Leaf Tie gives cable management a green look

Posted: 04 May 2010 07:01 AM PDT

If you prefer cheap cable management, it tends to involve anything you happen to have around.  That usually includes things like twist ties and zip ties, both of which work pretty well.  Sure, they aren’t the most attractive thing, but they’re easy to use and hold the cords pretty firmly.  Well now you can combine looks with that easy use quality.  These zip ties actually have cute little leaves to decorate your chords.

It gives all of your cords the look of being one giant vine.  This way you don’t have to hide them quite as much.  You could always use these leaves for other things throughout your house and make everything look a bit plant-like.  These leaves come in 2 different greens, black, white, blue and red.  The packages have 12 ties in each box.  These leaves are posted in the store section of the designer site, but you’ll have to contact them to find out availability and pricing.
