Sony Dash ready to hit the market

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 03:57 PM PDT

Back at CES 2010 we saw that Sony unveiled the Dash during their press conference, and while this was never going to be a game changer of any kind, it was still nice to see yet another touchscreen device ready to hit the market. Well, a good 4 months or so has elapsed since then, and it is finally good to know that Sony will be introducing its Dash Wi-Fi touchscreen device to the market at last, where you are able to receive real-time, personalized Internet content that is pushed to you regardless of whether you are at home or at the office. The Sony Dash has been tagged with a $199 price tag, where you can purchase it online from SonyStyle.com or pick it up from other Sony Style retail stores and authorized dealers nationwide.

You get a 7″ color touchscreen display to view all the relevant information being shown, where the Dash will rely on a current wireless internet connection in order to receive a continuous display of your selections from more than 1,000 free apps, where many of them are offered via Chumby Industries, Inc., where among these include news, calendars, weather, sports, and social networking. Not only that, with the use of BRAVIA Internet Video, the Sony Dash is able to let you be entertained via TV episodes, films and additional video content and music from a host of other providers such as CBS, Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and Slacker amongst others.

You will be pleased to know that the Dash will boast a playlist of your own personalized internet world which is constantly refreshed and pushed to you, hence helping you save time since there is less need to search for your favorite content or to log onto your favorite sites. Apart from all of the above mentioned, the Sony Dash also doubles up as an alarm clock, letting you wake up through your favorite music videos, internet radio or other video content instead of the standard alarm clock buzzer which is old hat by now. Nice to know that multi-tasking is also supported, which means you can refer to a recipe in the kitchen while having some MP3 files playing in the background.

McGill University in Montreal creates haptic floor

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 03:40 PM PDT

My source calls this an augmented reality floor tiles, but I don’t think this is really “augmented reality”. I’ve seen augmented reality as tech better used on webcams. This particular concept device allows your feet to have different sensations as you step.

Perhaps a better description of this product would be a modular “haptic” floor tiling system. It has a “deformable plate suspended on a platform”, which enables the user the ability to step on a floor with a different feel. I believe it works by using the plate and platform sensors that can detect forces from the foot, and then give off the proper vibrations to simulate the feeling of stepping on whatever you’re supposed to be stepping on. There is even top-down projection and speakers to use the visual and audio feedback.

Seriously, that’s what it does. I have no idea what you would use it for. I mean, do you need a floor that requires you to feel such surfaces as sand, snow, grass, or even pebbles?

I’m assuming that this will help create the crunch of snow beneath your feet, or the light touch of grass. If it does sand, then I wonder if it does the hot sand in the beach that you burn your feet on. Impress your friends with this one, for sure.

Battizer Battery Charger gives a better charge

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 03:13 PM PDT

For any gadget lover a battery charger is almost absolutely necessary.  After you become fed up with battery costs it’s just one of those items you have to have.  Well this battery charger actually claims to give your batteries even more power than the original capacity.  Now it says it may do this, but at the very least it will absolutely give a full charge and at a much faster rate than other chargers.

You zinc carbon batteries will only take 15 minutes to charge completely and the alkaline take 1 hour.  It’s capable of charging AA and AAA zinc carbon, alkaline, NiMh and NiCD batteries.  When the light blinks green on the front it means it’s charging and when it goes steady green that means the battery has a full charge.  They even say that they can charge those zinc carbon batteries up to 5 times more and the alkaline 10 times more.  Now you’ll have to test it out to find out if the claims are true, but luckily there is a 30 day money back guarantee.  If you do choose to give it a try it’ll cost you $67.

Soulra Solar Powered iPod Speaker

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 02:51 PM PDT

If you have a bright sunny day, it might be nice to take your music along with you when you’re out enjoying the day.  This particular iPod speaker won’t require you to carry around any spare batteries, since it pulls all of the juice it needs straight from the sun.  Of course it’s not waterproof, so should you see clouds forming you might want to run the speaker someplace dry.

The dock will play your iPod for up to 7 hours continuously for every full charge it receives.  Now they don’t say quite how long it will take for this to charge up again, but with a solar panel of that size hopefully it won’t be too shabby.  Although it’s not waterproof, it is actually water-resistant, so should it get a few splashes at the pool it’ll keep on playing.  When you purchase this you’ll also receive a remote control to keep control at a distance.  You can purchase it for $200 through Frontgate.

Hozuki LED Candle Lantern

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 01:36 PM PDT

When you’re out camping if you enjoy reading you just find a way.  Be it huddling close to the lantern on a picnic table or finding a way to tie it to the top of the inside of your tent.  This invention is probably straight from someone who has gotten fed up with rigging something up.  If you want something more to help with the lighting, but that has a natural flare, this lantern is it.

The handy hook allows for you to hook it to the underside of your tent on the inside or even on a conveniently located tree branch.  When you’re at home you could even use it as convenient back up lighting.  The light has several different modes, one of which being the candle mode.  You can also dim or brighten the light.  It has 3 different levels of brightness to choose between.  When it’s in candle mode you can also choose different levels of brightness.  You can purchase the lantern for $89.99 through Think Geek.
