Concept Future Kitchen controlled by Text Messages Posted: 27 Apr 2010 04:30 PM PDT Future Kitchen is a concept kitchen, and it is essentially what it says it is: the kitchen of the future. It may not be as advanced as the Jetsons’ kitchen, but it is more advanced than mine. Best of all, it uses something completely modern as control: texting. Let’s say that you have something in the oven, and you want to cook it before you get home from work. All you need to do is send a text message, and it will start cooking. You can use it for running the dishwasher, the range, and pretty much everything else in the kitchen. Of course, I can see a few things wrong with this particular product. For example, do you really want to have something in the oven while you are gone? It’s very easy to forget about your kitchen when you are away, and you don’t want to come home to a house full of smoke. Even worse might be the cases where you think you turned your oven on using your cellular phone, but it turns out something went wrong, like you forgot to send the message. Just think about all those times you set a VCR to tape, and then it didn’t. As I have stated before, this next gadget is just concept for now, but it really should be reality in a society that texts constantly. Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. The Nazis were working on jetpacks? It’s true. Posted: 27 Apr 2010 04:01 PM PDT I like writing articles about jet-packs, and I just had to write about this one when I heard it was a Nazi jet pack. Seriously, I’m not trying to tell you that all that jet-pack stuff that you may or may not have seen saw in The Rocketeer was real? Of course not, but the Nazis were playing around with this particular model, also known as the HimmelSturmer (aka the Skystormer). Just to let you know, this picture here isn’t taken from some old Nazi archive files. It is simply a representation of what could have been. The HimmelSturmer used a pulse jet engine, like the type used in the V-1 Buzz Bomb that rained on England many a time during the war. The purpose of the HimmelSturmer isn’t to make the wearer fly like Superman, but it is to make the wearer leap tall buildings in a single bound. At least able to jump over minefields, barbed wire, trenches, or anything else that might get in the way. It was planned for the soldiers to create 180 foot jumps at an altitude of 50 feet. As far as my source says, this tech arrived late in the war, and it doesn’t look like there was an active prototype. Still, the idea of Nazi jet-packs is just plain cool, right? From a science-fiction standpoint, of course. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. [ The Nazis were working on jetpacks? Samsung STORY Station 3.0 portable hard drive Posted: 27 Apr 2010 03:45 PM PDT
The Samsung STORY 3.0’s SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface is able to offer a maximum transfer rate of 5 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is a whole lot more compared to 480 megabits per second (Mbps) that is currently seen in USB 2.0. This means one is able to move 4MB of music (which is roughly the equivalent of a 3-minute song) or image files (let’s take a 6-megapixel camera in hi-resolution photos on average) within 0.02 seconds, while an HD movie in just 2.3 minutes. Don’t worry about your older computer which has yet to have a USB 3.0 port – this new interface is backward-compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 interfaces, although you will have to learn to live with the slower speeds then. Apart from offering great performance, the Samsung STORY 3.0 is also a looker, boasting a minimalist design that was specially inspired by retro electronics while offering a combination of a grey, brushed aluminum casing with the logo stenciled in red. All casing materials are RoHS-compliant, while the ventilation slits ensure even heat dissipation so that performance remains stable and reliable. There are three energy-saving modes to choose from – idle, sleep and suspend, to add to its green credentials. You will be able to choose from varying capacities of 1TB to 2TB, where each purchase is backed by a 3-year warranty. Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 27 Apr 2010 03:39 PM PDT Alright, so let’s say you have a sand box that you enjoy allowing your kids to play in without worrying about what they’ll find. That or you just happen to have a deep unwavering hatred for felines, now you can make sure that they’ll stay away from your lawn. It won’t harm the cats at all, it’ll just make an obnoxious noise that keeps them away. It’s meant to be used outdoors, so it’s of course weatherproof. It requires a 9 volt battery to keep it up and running. While it is going it’ll cover an area of 330 square feet. It doesn’t make the noise at all times, just when it senses movement. Once the ultrasonic alarm goes off, no humans will actually be able to hear it. You can purchase the ContechCatStop Ultrasonic Outdoor Cat Deterrent for $51.95 from Amazon. Domestic Transformer turns 344-foot square space into 24-room house Posted: 27 Apr 2010 03:36 PM PDT This is one of those posts where I think you should just watch the video (located after the jump) and read about it. This is Gary Chang’s “Domestic Transformer”, located in the heart of Hong Kong. It is one of the most populated cities on Earth, and Gary Chang has made his typical 344 square foot living space into a 24-room house. It is possible with sliding walls. What you see here is his 2-meter wide kitchen, which is located behind his bookcase. If he wants the bookcase back, he folds up the kitchen and pushes it against the wall. He even has a bathtub and fold-down bed on another wall. The walls are on railings on the ceiling, and he has mirrors on the ceiling to cover them up. The mirrors also serve as a reflective area for the windows that you see here. These windows create a warm bath of light that Gary says makes him happy, even with bad weather. In all honesty, my living area is pretty small, and I wouldn’t mind turning my home into one of my Domestic Transformers. I’m sure it would be pretty time-consuming to get all the railings and walls into place, though. Still, I admire Gary Chang’s initiative to try and make a small place big. I think he succeeded.

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 03:17 PM PDT No fashion piece would quite be complete without a hidden USB drive. It’s just a strange phenomon, but it’s a lesson you have to learn fast. Otherwise you could make a horrible social blunder. Thankfully Tokyoflash is now jamming USB drives into one end of the wristband of this watch. That way your drive will always be within reach. Then to finish it off they had to put on a watch face that requires you to think in order to read the time. There are 3 small circles, each one represents the usual things like hours, minutes and oddly the third one is not seconds. The 3rd indicates how much storage space remains on the drive. Despite that it does look strange, it shouldn’t be too hard to read once you get the hang of it. Sadly it’s still just a design, so you won’t be able to pick this one up just yet. Posted: 27 Apr 2010 01:59 PM PDT Although your clock is an extremely small gadget, it’s still pulling power. No gadget is too small to be switched over to some other sort of eco-friendly power. This one actually pulls its power from water, which makes it possible to use it in rooms that wouldn’t get enough light to utilize solar power. Of course if you’re not very good at remembering to water plants, then maybe a water-powered clock isn’t the best idea. Unfortunately it doesn’t exactly fill itself up with water. Every 1 and a half weeks you’ll have to fill up those little tubes with water again. That’s actually not too shabby, it’s just remembering that’s the trick. It has both a time and date function and no alarm functions on it. It’s a pretty basic little clock. It would actually be a fantastic gift for anyone that’s just flat our fascinated by renewable energy, no matter what their age. It’s a great way to get to see that work up close, even if it is at such a small scale. You can purchase the Leeds Element Water Powered Clock for $20 through Amazon.
