Kraken steampunk 3D goggles

Love all things steampunk? You might be interested in this then, the Kraken steampunk 3D goggles thanks to the efforts of Will Rockwell, where this pair of goggles look really revolutionary and well ahead of its time. Despite being homemade, it is touted to be very comfortable to put on, with lenses crafted from a set of Real3D glasses, making it suitable for use when viewing 3D movies in theaters. This will probably result in a scenario where most people will look at you instead of some 3D magic on the silver screen. The goggles themselves are screwed and soldered together, being rather sturdy in built. You will be able to find it accompanied by a genuine vintage goggle box.

Quill Concept All-Terrain Vehicle

What you are seeing here isn’t some prop from a science fiction movie, but the Quill concept by British designer Halil Buzcuoglu.

This car is designed to drive over snow and land “with equal efficiency”. Whoa, does that mean that it can drive through snow as fast as it can on land? That would be quite something, considering those tank treads on the front of it.

The Quill can hold two passengers, and it has a large windscreen for a front view, and integrated cameras for a rear view. It has a joystick for steering, and I would imagine it would be capable of a lot if it were actually built.

Well, I suppose that’s all I can really say about the Quill. I suppose I could sing about it, with this song to the tune of Smashmouth’s “All-Star”.

Train interior concept can retract seats

Just to let you know, you are not looking at the interior of a ghost train. This is concept design for a train interior where railway travel isn’t a drag for the living. Designed by Chris Precht, it has an interior with pull down seats instead of stationary and unmoving seats.

This makes a railway car very accommodating for whatever occasion that you need it. For example, if you just want simple passenger seats, pull them down. If you want to have a little open space for your on-train party, retract the chairs into the ceiling.

I’m not certain how these seats can retract like this, as there would have to be plenty of room up top for that, correct? I wonder where the luggage would go? Also, those seats in the front row, the one that the pretty lady is sitting on, seem comfortable, but don’t look like they are designed for compact storage. I mean, if they were able to fold up, that would be one thing, but it doesn’t look like they do.

All bugs aside, this certainly will reduce crowded conditions, and make it easier for wheelchair-bound passengers to travel by train.

It is a shame that this is still a concept, as I do not like all the crowded seating arrangements of mass transit. I’ve never traveled by train, but if there is a way to make this work for an airplane passenger area as well as a train, then more power to this patent!

AILA robot knows how to hold things

This is AILA. I have no idea what it stands for, but she (yeah, I’ll call her a she) was at the Hanover Messe 2010 event at the DFKI Bremen showcase.

AILA uses SemProM, also known as Semantic Product Memory, which enables her (yes, I gave a gender to a robot once again) to figure out how to handle objects based on its shape, size, and fragility. See what that means after the jump.

Let me put it in human terms. If there was a small steel ball and an egg in front of you. You would hold these objects differently, would you? The egg would require a firm get gentle grip while the steel ball would require a strong grip to get it off of the ground.

The AILA has laser range finders that enable stereo vision in her head, and she has a 3D camera can scan for object recognition and orientation. The built-in RFID reader on the left hand also helps.

There is a video of her below, and you can see her in action. Granted, there isn’t anything to see except AILA carrying what looks like some motor oil or lighter fluid. You should note that she doesn’t crush it in her hands.

I’m not certain why AILA was given a feminine look, and it is a shame that she doesn’t have legs.

NuMetrex Bra Detects Heart Rate

The nice thing about working out on a treadmill is that it gives you all sorts of statistics, one of which being your heart rate.  If you prefer to keep track of your heart rate, then working out on a machine is about the easiest way to do it.  That is unless you pick up yourself one of these sports bras that tracks your heart rate.  That is, if you’re female.  If you’re male, well, people might start to ask a whole lot of questions.

Electrodes within the bra detect your heart rate and then thankfully send the information off to the watch on your wrist.  I imagine it’s a little more readable if the info is on your wrist instead of on the bra.  The bra, watch and transmitter start out in price at $99 through NuMetrex.  Of course if you are male, there is a very tight shirt that can do just the same through the same company.  The shirt sets are a bit more than the bra sets, starting out at $109.

Steampunk USB Drive With Built-In SD Card Reader

If only I had an endless supply of cash for the latest best looking gadgets out there.  Truthfully I’d probably spend more money on interesting steampunk gadgets like this than things like the iPad.  I usually enjoy the eccentric gadgets over the streamlined ones.  This gadget although it’s the size of a USB drive, it actually has a built-in card reader.

That card reader will make it possible for you to store, read and access an SD card of any capacity.  Plus on the other end is an 8GB USB drive that’ll allow for you to store a great deal of data.  This whole thing is made of brass, copper, glass and watch/clock parts.  You can purchase it for $195 through Etsy.  It’s definitely not a cheap little gadget, but it’d be worth it if you have money to spare.

Snakkes Chat Bubble Wall Lamp

With a dry erase board you could easily write down all of the messages you need.  It’s just so bland, some messages need a little more finesse to be properly delivered.  Thankfully there are things such as this speech bubble wall lamp that will be sure to make your messages much more obvious to anyone else in your home.

Sure, it’s not really necessary to pay the extra money for a light up chat bubble, but it makes things so much more fun.  It makes me wish that I had the amount of cash needed for purchasing this.  The lamp can be wall mounted and the front is a whiteboard that can be marked on with your usual whiteboard marker.  The frame of the light is actually a steel frame.  You can purchase it for £195 or $300 through Northern Lighting.
