M-Edge Accessories offer Camouflage line of jackets and bags for the Amazon Kindle Posted: 07 Apr 2010 05:36 PM PDT
This new line came about in an effort to help boost troop morale, as M-Edge has partnered with Len Edgerly of The Kindle Chronicles, a weekly podcast concerning the Amazon Kindle, in order to provide a Kindle for an Army Sergeant who is deployed on active duty in Afghanistan. This initiative has seen Len Edgerly and Ken Clark, a former military officer, to co-found E-Books for Troops so that U.S. military personnel deployed overseas will be able to enjoy the wonders of free e-book readers in order to enhance their opportunities for recreation and renewal when on tour. M-Edge has done the needful by donating a camouflage jacket and e-Luminator booklight for each Kindle that is picked up by E-Books for Troops. We do wonder whether wherever our troops are will be able to download their favorite copies of paperbacks? Whatever the case is, there is a trio of styles from M-Edge's existing Sport Line, where it provides the perfect solution for on-the-move readers in rugged environments without having to worry about sand, wear and tear, and screen scratches. Made from durable and easy-to-clean ripstop nylon, a plush grey fleece on the inside helps keep your Kindle well protected. The Leisure Jacket will utilizes a clear vinyl cover which protects Kindle's screen from sand, dust, and moisture without sacrificing full functionality of the buttons and keyboard. As for the Latitude Jacket, it zips closed thanks to a hidden double zipper. Last but not least is the Journey Bag that functions as a messenger-style bag that is perfectly sized to accommodate the Kindle as well as its accessories when traveling. Can you sign, record your voice, and give me a picture for my Rawlings Recordable Autograph Ball? Posted: 07 Apr 2010 04:23 PM PDT I believe that autographed baseballs can fetch a large price from collectors, but can you imagine having an autographed baseball with the player’s photo and a recording of their voice? Now that might be worth something. This is the Rawlings Recordable Autograph Ball, and it has a voice recorder that can do 12 seconds of anyone’s voice. So if you can ever get your favorite baseball player around to sign the ball, you can surely get him to say something to the ball as well. In case you are wondering, that isn’t an LCD screen on the ball, but just a 1.5 inch circular frame. I’m guessing that while the player is signing the ball, you can take a picture of him, and then put that picture into the frame later on. All in all, you got yourself quite a collector’s item! Of course, this product really needs to have more than just a switch to turn the microphone on and off. After all, the famous player’s voice could so easily be recorded over by a curious child, that it isn’t even funny. Just think of how upset the parent would be if they found out that junior had recorded over their favorite baseball player’s voice. You should be able to pick up this Rawlings Recordable Autograph Ball on the Things You Never Knew Existed site for about $24.98. Let these Red Robots be your guide Posted: 07 Apr 2010 03:56 PM PDT I have to admit that I have never heard of Santander’s Group City in Madrid before, but it is certainly one of the most advanced places that I have ever seen. Apparently this is the location of one of the largest banks in the world, and is employed by about 5,500 people. You can imagine that is easy to get lost in this massive place, which is why the robots were called in. Yes, that is what these red round robots are. They are “Interactive Guest Assistants” with a screen in front of them to ask the visitor where they want to go. They will then take you to the conference room or wherever you wish to be going. Do not let the perspective in this photo fool you, these robots are only a little higher than the average person’s knee. There is a video here that I have included below of these red round robots in action, as well as some other very cool technology. For example, there is an interactive map that is highlighted by the user’s proximity, and a scale model that uses augmented reality. All of this is the product of Ydreams, and this type of technology should really be incorporated into other visitor centers.

Iron Man’s Jarvis comes to life with Chad Barraford’s Digital Life Assistant Posted: 07 Apr 2010 03:28 PM PDT Some of you might remember in Iron Man how Tony Stark had a computer program named Jarvis that was responsible for running the operations of his home. It was a clear tip of the hat to Edwin Jarvis, a butler for the super-hero team the Avengers from Marvel comics. Chad Barraford must have really liked the Iron Man film, as he created his own version of Jarvis. He used a 4-year-old Mac mini, and linked just about everything in his home from home lighting to even his George Foreman grill. In Iron Man, Tony Stark was able to interact with Jarvis with his voice, desktop computers, or control pads on the walls. Barraford controls his Jarvis with a remote control along with a wireless mic and the Mac’s built-in speech recognition software. Barraford’s Jarvis has a security system that is dependent on RFID tags. Chad gives his friends tags that can fit on a keychain, and even his dog. This lets Jarvis know who is in the house, so it doesn’t unintentionally give away certain information when it discusses his Facebook or bank status. Chad Barraford started the Jarvis project about a year ago, and it cost him less than $700 in electronics. He hopes to commercialize Jarvis, but I’m guessing that Marvel comics will want him to change the name. I guess what is important is that he can make any home a smart home. Posted: 07 Apr 2010 09:00 AM PDT By this point I’ve come across a great deal of strange and sometimes almost unreadable clocks. Well this clock is unique, but thankfully it’s still perfectly readable. Plus, it’s attractive, which is something that ranks towards the top of the needs list when it comes to clocks. After all, you have to look at the clock all of the time, so it should fit your tastes. This clock mimics a much smaller clock, specifically a pocket watch. If you are a pocket watch fan, then this should suit you perfectly. Instead of being pocket sized, it’s big enough to read from across the room. To be specific the diameter of this clock is 9 inches or 23 centimeters. It comes only in this bright shiny silver and in order to keep it up and running you’ll need to keep 1 AA battery within it. It’ll cost you £20.00 or about $30 through Urban Outfitters. Source: RetroToGo Cool Gift Idea: Digital Picture Frames, check out our reviews. Posted: 07 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT Gadgets seem to slowly be making their way into the fashion world. Sure, they aren’t really something you see everyday out on the sidewalk, but they are starting to be created a little more. I’m still not sure that I want an electronic dress, but it would be another way to make sure all of your small gadgets stay charged. Whether or not something like this would ever catch on enough to be produced is strongly debatable though. The ultrathin photovoltaic films are very thin, so they will let the fabric fall naturally. Plus they create a little bit of a design on the dress. The USB charger is attached at the waste of the dress itself. Combining fashion and technology could be incredibly tricky for the general public. Fashion is notorious for changing constantly and technology has the same issue. To combine them would mean you have a dress that will stay in trend and with the times for all of a week. Posted: 07 Apr 2010 07:00 AM PDT As far as desk set ups go this has to be the ultimate this world has to offer. It took a serious amount of work to be created, but the end result appears well worth it. After finishing it, I doubt you’d want to tuck it away in an office where it’s rarely viewed by guests. This very large desk has been redone from an old Victorian organ and had quite a bit of new technology installed onto it. After it was all said and done the creator managed to fit 3 monitors, a printer, scanner, webcam, iPhone dock, card readers and a built-in clock. Then finally there are even horn speakers to finish off the whole look of the desk. The desk took all of 6 months to create, although they don’t say exactly how many hours were put into it. Posted: 06 Apr 2010 05:33 PM PDT Fancy a new musical instrument that you wear on your face, bearing an image that will sear into the consciousness of children and some adults with that of a beast? Enter the Pianowl, the idea of Tara Pattenden who is a visual artist in the field of media, video, sound and installation. This audio mask is part of her Masters’ thesis at the Aalto Universities Media Lab in Helsinki, Finland. The whole idea would be to create a traditional mask or costume while introducing musical elements, which means soft piano keys have been integrated into this mask that will emit music whenever you press it. Kids would probably run helter skelter when they see this at a campfire story telling session. Source: Talk2myshirt Check out the Coolest Gadgets 2008 Gift Guides, Christmas shopping made easy. Posted: 06 Apr 2010 05:31 PM PDT The iPad isn’t even out for a week yet and folks have already found a new use for it – to function as a bookend. Case in point, the iBookend that will transform your iPad into an everyday object, although we are rather wary of the iPad being slim and slender, some accidental pressure or knock might just cause the display of the iPad to crack, no? At least you can watch your movies on this without having to worry about tired hands holding the iPad for a couple of hours. Tech Cult – We cover the latest tech news, but always with a funny twist. Beats by Dr. Dre Red Sox Edition Headphones Posted: 06 Apr 2010 05:22 PM PDT Beats by Dr. Dre has been making waves for some time now, with legendary artist and producer Dr. Dre being the brains behind this marketing move that has added some more Benjamins into his coffer over the years. Well, Beats by Dr. Dre has now teamed up with Interscope Geffen A&M Chairman Jimmy Iovine, and Monster, a global leader in audio/video accessories, to bring a Major League Baseball addition to the market – we’re talking about the Boston Red Sox, where fans of the baseball team will be able to check out “Beats by Dr. Dre Red Sox Edition Headphones” from Monster. This new pair of headphones will boast official Boston Red Sox team colors and insignia, and is historical simply because it is the first pair of Major League Baseball licensed Beats by Dr. Dre headphones that was created for a sports team while being made available to the general public. To commemorate the launch of Red Sox Edition headphones, the Beats By Dr. Dre team (which comprises of Dr. Dre himself, Jimmy Iovine, and Head Monster Noel Lee and special guests) recently joined the Red Sox at Fenway Park for an Opening Night announcement. The headphones can be picked up from regional Best Buy and Apple store outlets as well as other select retailers for a recommended retail price of $399.95. Not cheap, we know, but then again being a fan of any sports is hardly pocket-friendly, either. If you’re a Red Sox fan for so many years, how much have you spent on its merchandise to date? Surely it is much more than the $399.95 figure quoted, no? Similar to all other Beats by Dr. Dre models, “Beats by Dr. Dre Red Sox Edition Headphones from Monster” was specially designed to offer consumers with an unprecedented level of headphone audio performance, boasting extreme clarity, deep bass and full power. It will see the combination of advanced materials, sophisticated construction, extra large drivers, and a powerful digital amplifier, making sure you are able to enjoy clear vocals, detailed highs, and super low, deep bass. Apart from that, it will also recreate the quietness of an isolated recording studio listening experience thanks to powered ambient noise-isolation. Any takers?
