Kyocera offers Laylo and Domino phones

Kyocera isn’t exactly one of the larger players in the cellphone arena, and their offerings fail to impress the masses most of the time, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t a honest, hardworking company. Well, perhaps the tide might turn in their favor with the announcement of two new cellphone launches – the Kyocera Laylo and Domino phones which will be available from MetroPCS, making it to retail stores just in time for the holiday season to show off to your family members and friends that you have finally decided to ditch that monochrome display handset without a digital camera built in.

The Laylo will come in a slider format, boasting an eye-catching red color with a soft-touch finish and a reflective twist. A quick slide downwards will open to reveal a hidden vanity mirror, which more or less places this in the domain of the ladies. Know of any guys who would want to carry a vanity mirror with them wherever they go? Well, the Domino will take on a candybar form factor instead, where it will also sport the Yuletide color of red while offering features that are a notch above other handsets of similar price levels.

A further search showed that the Laylo comes with a 2.2″ contoured high-resolution display and a 1.3 megapixel camera apart from the aforementioned discrete vanity mirror. You get a relatively generous keypad within with excellent tactile and visual separation of the keys for faster, easier typing. Other features include Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, a WAP 2.0 browser, BREW 3.1.5 and a paperless user guide to get new users started while saving some trees in the process. The Domino, on the other hand, also comes with a large display with legible and large fonts. Other features like Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity, a WAP 2.0 browser and BREW 3.1.5 are alsow thrown in to offer more bang for your buck.

This is the coin bank that automatically tracks deposits and withdrawals, helping young financiers learn firsthand about fiscal responsibility. As each coin is inserted, its value is added to the balance displayed on an LCD panel next to the coin slot; when a coin is dispensed, its value is deducted. The bank recognizes each denomination and automatically sorts coins into four separate chambers as they are deposited. It holds more than $25 and will remember its balance even if power is lost. Can’t they come up with a localized version for different countries? We’re guessing the market isn’t that big to begin with elsewhere, which might impact the bottomline. If you’re interested in the Balance Keeping Bank as Junior’s last minute Christmas present (or perhaps even belated), then Hammacher is carrying it for $29.95.

Ice Cream Lamp keeps sweets on the brain

I’m fairly sure that most of the Christmas season is directly centered around food.  I’m sure there are other things, but sweets are a big part of the holiday.  Be it plates heaping with fudge, sugar cookies or candy canes.  There are always plenty of sweets around.  Although an ice cream cone isn’t a traditional Christmas treat, it still fits in the sweets category.  Now you could have a light up fake ice cream cone to keep that sweets theme going year round.  It’s like it being the Christmas season all the time.

This lamp features a giant ice cream cone, to be specific, this ice cream cone is over 2 feet tall.  I don’t advise attempting to eat a real live 2 foot tall ice cream cone in honor of your new lamp though.  I’m pretty sure that’d put you in a permanent state of brain freeze.  The lamp comes with a bulb and plugs into the wall like every other normal lamp.  You can purchase it for $48 from Fred Flare.

Accordion Travel Speaker

If you need a travel speaker, this one will stand in the shape you need it.  Just fold it up and toss it in a bag, then when you’re in dire need of a speaker just unfold it.  Once unfolded it stands up straight or even in a slightly more wavy pattern if that’s what you require.  With the fold up design it’ll make sure the speakers stay safe while you’re knocking them around in your bag.

The bright white speakers are said to have powerful sound (which of course, every seller claims).  The stiff hinges keep the speaker open and then it has an LED power indicator light to let you know the speaker is up and going.  The speaker has a couple different power options.  You can run it on the 3 AAA batteries or you can plug it into your USB port and power it that way.  It has a total of 3 speakers and can be purchased for $14 from Urban Outfitters.

KN-9901_03_LRGThis next device is for those who have both the Xbox 360 and the Sony Playstation 3, and is well aware of the charging problems that come with the controllers.

The Konnet Power Pyramid is a way to charge two Xbox 360 controllers, as well as two PS3 controllers. It puts them in a very lovely arrangement on the pyramid, and makes you feel like you are a member of the gaming Illuminati.

All that is required of the user is to plug it in the wall, and then plug the controllers in the proper places. Of course, the Xbox ones and PS3 ones are not interchangeable. There is a red light that glows when it is charging, and blue when the controller is fully charged.

In all honesty, having a charger that can do two pairs of controllers is more than enough for me, but if you know a gamer that actually needs more, than you should know that Konnet actually makes a Power Pyramid that can actually hold four pairs of controllers.

The basic Konnet Power Pyramid will cost about $55, and is located at many stores everywhere. You might wonder why there isn’t one with Wii controllers, and that is a very good question.

Cipher Drinking Glass lets you know what the liquid is

cipher_glass_1Have you ever been in a party where every glass was the same, and you didn’t know which was yours? What’s really sick is when you take a sip, and discover that it is definitely not your drink.

Now imagine that you had these Cipher Drinking Glasses designed by Damjan Stankovic. See all those random colored squares on the glasses? Apparently, they have some odd ability to make certain words depending on what the liquid is in the glass. Depending on what squares appear, that will show what is in them.

It’s like those glasses back in the eighties that had the muscular men or buxom babes with the outfits that would disappear if there was liquid in the glass. I suppose that this is some sort of sensors in order to spell out what is in the cup.

You will note that it knows that one is “Coca-Cola” as opposed to “Pepsi”. Those would have to be some interesting sensors, and I wonder if they could detect a virgin drink from an alcoholic beverage. I mean, there must be thousands of possible drinking combinations, and I’m just not certain that this one glass could really do them all.

Unfortunately, this is still a concept device, so I doubt you’ll be seeing these glasses at a party anytime soon.

San Jose cops to get cameras on their heads

Staff PhotojournalistSome of you might remember when we reported on the Taser Axon, a camera that mounts on the head. According to Mercury News, the AXON project will apparently be used on police officers in the San Jose area.

Now, these devices are designed to sit right above the ear, just like you see in the picture. They will be activated as soon as the officer speaks to a citizen or suspect.

This is perfect for cases in which it is “your word against the officer”. This sort of makes you think twice when you really want to talk back to the cop you gave you a ticket that you know you didn’t deserve.

By the way, the videos are uploaded to a central server, and I would assume that the officer is to shut them off in downtime such as on the toilet or at the donut shop.

You know what it reminds me off? Aliens. Yes, before there was Avatar, James Cameron introduced us to a world of space marines with cameras on their ears. You might remember the scene where the one guy “adjusts” his camera by banging it against the wall. Hopefully these AXON cameras can take a hit like that.

I’m not certain when San Jose plans to implement this program, but I can’t help but think there will soon be a time when all officers will be required to wear these cameras.
