Make Yourself a Green Thumb

True confession time. I am a killer. I kill plants. I try to grow them indoors and outdoors with the same results. Poor little green friends. It may be that they dry out (oops! Forgot the water!). They have come too close to the radiator too. And outdoor stuff seems to suffer a variety of deaths: lack of sun, weeds, neighborhood cat deposits. I really DO enjoy having plants around. But how to keep them alive?

Time to incorporate the smartphone in keeping greenery alive. Parrot – more famous for electronics like their R/C AR Drone – plans on launching Flower Power in 2013. They call it "the most advanced plant sensor" and after researching it I believe them! These two pronged gadgets easily slide into any pot or planter or bed to measure critical plant stats. Via Bluetooth they transmit data to your smartphone's Flower Power app. Parrot consulted botanists to ensure they measured the right stuff so you will get information on soil moisture, humidity, sun exposure, temperature and fertilizer.  And of course the app can alert you when any of the plant's "vitals" are out of whack. So for people like me…growing plants becomes easy! You can track up to 6,000 plants, errr sensors with the app. One AAA battery is required per sensor but you will get months of life from it. Parrot has not announced a launch date or time. But in all of the press they received at CES they insisted it will be out this year. Popular Mechanics and Stuff magazine both liked Flower Power so much they gave it a CES award. If they experts like it you, like me, probably will too.

Avoid Obesity. Pump Your Stomach?

January, sweet January. That time when we all feel the holidays around our waistline, gym membership sales skyrocket and many of us set our list of ways we will try to improve our health. Giving up the pasta, breads and sugar can be a challenge. What if you could pump it out? Gorge yourself and take it out of your system. Sounds crazy, but Aspire Bariatrics developed AspireAssist which does exactly that. Currently available in parts of Europe – this weight loss tool literally allows the user to pump food out of your stomach.

Sure, AspireAssist may not be for the average Joe looking to drop a couple lbs. But face it. The amount of gastric bypass surgery in the US is on the rise. Obesity exists as one of the biggest challenges in fast moving, quick preparation, fast food world. And the conditions that obesity contributes to (diabetes, heart conditions, etc) are enough to make docs and patients realize that immediate weight loss is a critical stop on the road to healing. AspireAssist is a minimally invasive, outpatient process that threads the pump device and, ummm…exit point(?) into your stomach. Wait 20 minutes after you eat and about 30% of the stomachs contents can be pumped out. By not digesting the calories the body can't absorb them and add to weight gain.

Ok, pumping your stomach may be extreme – but where the device is finding success stories is overweight patients who continually have problems maintaining weight loss. And for some whose health become so impacted by weight gain I would think that AspireAssist may provide a legitimate solution.

Magnetic Light Switch Covers

When it comes to making sure that your entire bunch of keys remain where they are always, there are some inexplicable moments in life when you just simply forgot where you put your keys, or for the life of you, swore that it was last put at the place you normally keep it, but for some reason or another, it is no longer there. Perhaps what you need is some novelty to ensure that something like this never happens again – and Thinkgeek's $24.99 Magnetic Light Switch Covers ought to step in to help.

Basically, the Magnetic Light Switch Covers is pretty much self-explanatory – not only does it function as a light switch cover, it also allows you to store your keys on the light switch. Super WiFi Antenna helps extend your WiFi reach

When you add the prefix "Super" to anything, and rest assured, expectations on the performance of that particular noun would be sent to sky high proportions. So when we came across the $119.95 Super WiFi Antenna, there was this naughty bit in me that wanted to tear into all that the Super WiFi Antenna promised but could not deliver, but just to give the benefit of the doubt to First Street Online, let us see what this device touts.

For starters, it claims to be so powerful and amped up, that it is capable of picking up available WiFi signals from up to a mile away, how about that? All you need to do is plug it into an available USB port on your notebook or computer, and you're good to go. For it to be weather and UV resistant would mean the Super WiFi Antenna is rather hardy, and I strongly suspect that the notebook it is plugged into will not be that adventurous to remain exposed to the sun for long hours on end, let alone the user unless he/she is in need of a tan. Of course, this is great only if you have a free WiFi network to connect to, but otherwise, it could be put to good use when you want to work from your yard under the sun.

iTwin Connect unveiled

Security of your precious data is often one of the priorities to have right at the top of your computing list, and even more when it comes to giant corporations. Well, there are many ways to leak out data (unwillingly or otherwise), and here is a potential solution for those who want to enjoy private and restriction-free browsing – with the iTwin Connect. The iTwin Connect will also be able to offer the wonders of remote file access and access to the home/office network (i.e., functioning as a personal virtual private network or VPN), coming in a simple and highly portable device form factor.

Basically, the iTwin Connect will comprise of two identical halves. In order to install, all you need to do is plug the device into a USB port on the home/office PC, detach one half of the device which will then be designated as the iTwin Connect "key", and carry that detached bit along. Whenever you are on the move, plug this key into a notebook and a secure VPN tunnel will magically be created to the home/office PC.

For the non-techies out there, there are some obvious benefits to reap from the iTwin Connect, where among them include 'Teleport Me', a feature that lets you browse privately and without being tied down to any restrictions. All Internet traffic will be directed via the secure VPN tunnel and the Internet is thus accessed via the home/office PC's Internet connection.

Not only that, 'Teleport Me' will also provide private access to the Internet via iTwin's dedicated network servers in US, Europe or Asia/Pacific. This bit comes across as useful should the home/office PC be in a position where it cannot be left on, and also should your browsing sessions require an IP locale that is different from that of the PC.

You can pick up the iTwin Connect for $129 a pop.

Facebook announces Graph Search

Now, I know that social networks are very different from what we normally serve up here, but this news is a wee bit too popular to not talk about – with Facebook announcing their very own social network search capability that comes in the form of Graph Search. Basically, Graph Search would empower Facebook users to have the relevant tools in order to map out their relationships with the people and things they care about. It is a living, breathing graph, and Facebook claims that right now, with over a billion people, it translates to over 240 billion photos and over a trillion connections. Truly mind blowing figures, and these are set to grow in time. Imagine how it would be like when one day, Facebook breaks into the China market.

Graph Search will kick off by being in beta, as all great enterprises start off. Originally, Facebook required folks to browse around, learn stuff about others and purposefully make new connections. Graph Search will return to such roots, although life will be a whole lot easier as users are now about to use the graph to make new connections.

Graph Search will come across as a bigger search bar at the top of each page. Whenever you perform a search, that search will determine the set of results pulled up, and it also doubles up as a title for the page, now how about that? You are then able to edit the title and in the process, create your own custom view of the content that you and your friends have shared over on Facebook.

Graph Search is a very different animal from web search, where the latter will take in a set of keywords (for example: "hip hop") and deliver the best possible results which match those keywords, while Graph Search helps you combine phrases (for example: “my friends in New York who like Jay-Z”) and retrieve a similar set of people, places, photos or other content that’s been shared on Facebook. How has your Graph Search experience been so far?

Phone Reminders on Your Wrist

Anyone paying attention to advancements in the world of using your watch as a helpful, connected device certainly look forward to 2013. Rumors of an Apple watch keep circulating. The long awaited launch of the Pebble was announced at CES. Health and fitness watch features flourished. And something called the Cookoo watch made some headlines. Some of you may look forward to checking texts and emails on a watch. Some can't go to the gym without a 'smart watch'. But some of us don't need THAT much on our wrist. Rather than serving as another device on which to read or interact, I would prefer something that is sort of an extension of my phone features.

Cookoo proves to be a reminder device rather than a total communication device. Cookoo syncs via low energy Bluetooth 4.0 with newer iOS devices: iPhone 4S or 5, iPad Mini, iPad g3 or g4 and iPod touch g5. After loading the Cookoo app onto your gadget your watch will receive notifications from the phone. Your watch will remind you of incoming or missed calls, messages, calendar reminders and clock alarms. If out of range from your device Cookoo will remind you. If you can't find your phone let your watch do it. When you are away from your phone you miss a beat. You can also use Cookoo to check in on Facebook or read messages, or even to remote trigger your device's camera. And Cookoo does all this for $129.99. Choose from one of five band colors. And unlike some of the more active smart watches – you will get about a year out of the Cookoo. And if the watch is not what you need, Cookoo offers a $40 keyfob to provide some of the same alerts. Visit their website to learn more or get your reminders on your wrist.

Everyone wants to have pure and clean skin, no doubt about that. If you ever doubt that, then check out the numbers that the cosmetics industry churns out each year. It runs into the billions for sure, as vanity appeals to every single one of us. Well, the quest to find the Fountain of Youth remains an elusive one, so we are left to getting enough exercise, keeping to a healthy diet, and also using other facial cleansing products such as creams and if you want to go a bit further, how about exploring life with the $299.95 Pore Cleaning Microdermabrasion System?

The Pore Cleaning Microdermabrasion System is a diamond-tip microdermabrasion system which relies on a gentle yet powerful suction that will help deeply cleanse pores, resulting in smooth and rejuvenated skin. It is different from other microdermabrasion kits out there that rely on crystals or peels, as this system has no messy residue and has been touted to be safe for use all over the face. Those who have sensitive under-eye regions, need not fret. The natural diamond-tipped wand will exfoliate the epidermis, and at the same time, vacuum up built-up dirt, makeup, and other impurities. Kyocera Ceramic Coffee Grinder

There is nothing quite like a piping hot cup of coffee for you to begin the day with, and while some of us are able to make do with any kind of coffee without having to complain, while others are far more picky with their taste buds. Well, you know what they say – if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself, and here we are with the $49.99 Kyocera Ceramic Coffee Grinder.

Basically, with the Kyocera Ceramic Coffee Grinder, you are able to grind it the way you want it, where there is a ceramic burr grinder that is hard and durable, and it does not only do coffee since it is fully adjustable and boasts of multi-use capability, letting you grind tea and spices to boot. The glass container that accompanies the Kyocera Ceramic Coffee Grinder is capable of holding 100 grams of coffee. Hmmm, writing this does make me feel like getting my own cuppa, and forget about the 3-in-1 sachets already.

Rapoo does a slew of wireless audio solutions

We are still not quite done with CES 2013 just yet, even though the show ended late last week, there are still some ripples to cover considering the vastness of the entire event. Well, Rapoo, being one of the leading manufacturers of wireless peripheral products, did take the opportunity to make an announcement of a trio of new wireless, portable audio solutions back at CES 2013. They are the Bluetooth Portable Speaker A5000, Bluetooth Portable Mini Speaker A3060 (as seen above) and Bluetooth Portable Speaker A8060, where all of them will deliver a compact design and powerful sound perfect for use at home or on the go.

First off, Rapoo's compact Bluetooth Portable Speaker A5000 will be a Bluetooth 4.0 speaker that will come in a range of bright colors that include lime green, watermelon pink, electric blue and basic black. Do not judge this by its small size, as it can deliver powerful sound while on the go, while boasting of a built-in microphone that doubles up as a speakerphone for hands-free calls as well as a 3.5mm jack to connect mobile devices

As for the cylindrical Bluetooth Portable Mini Speaker A3060 that you see above, it too, will jive to Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity while boasting Intelligent Voice Prompt that delivers audio status updates which includes when the speaker is paired to a device, battery life and volume changes. You are able to control the volume, pause/play music and skip over to the next/previous track from the connected smartphone, or you can also opt to use the integrated controls that are located on the top of the speaker. It will feature a built-in microphone for hands-free calling, a rechargeable lithium ion battery and five different metallic shades to choose from – silver, green, orange, yellow and blue.

Last but not least, the sleek Rapoo Bluetooth Portable Speaker A8060 will too, have Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity and Guided Acoustic Wave (GAW) Technology. It comes with smart control buttons with a proximity sensor that illuminates the controls whenever one is in range. All three models are tipped to be available before the first quarter of the year is over.

Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner

We have seen our fair share of Kickstarter projects, and while some of them fail to take off as they did not manage to raise the minimum amount of funds, others achieve their funding goals in a matter of hours – not even days, and this has led the folks behind these projects to come up with extended goals to further add more features to the final product. Well, here is one Kickstarter project that has yet to achieve its funding goal, but it is well on the way there with 20 days to go and $8,000 short of the $50,000 goal – the Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner.

The name itself, the Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner, is pretty much self-explanatory. With this nifty little device, you are able to scan, edit and even share your 35mm films over social media and email. All you need to do is turn on the scanner back-light, insert your film, snap a photo of it with a smartphone or other compatible device, make use of the included app to edit and share, and you are good to go. All it takes is but an instant and you will eventually end up with a digital version of your film that can then be archived, emailed and shared with friends.

This is a spanking new product that has been brandished to be the "perfect tool for analogue photographers and retro-enthusiasts." Do you agree with that assessment? Right now, the Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner will remain a Kickstarter exclusive, and assuming that all goes well and the planets are aligned properly, delivery is expected to happen this coming March.

The included Smartphone Film Scanner app will play nice with both Android and iPhone platforms, where it is capable of converting all types of 35mm films, including color negative, B&W negative, and slide among others. There will also be panorama stitching thrown into the mix alongside the ability to animate LomoKino stills for that added visual punch.
