Kitchen Convenience

Time for a kitchen fix! For you cooks out there, have you ever taken a step back from the counter when making a concoction only to find EVERY measuring tool strewn across the surface? Ugh. It seems that you never need just the teaspoon or just the ¼ cup. It always has to involve every device plus a spoon or whisk to mix it. This is exactly why we all need a Portion Classic. The spoon portion indicates ½ teaspoon, teaspoon and tablespoon. The neck of the spoon holds up to ¼ cup of wet or dry ingredients with a wide pour spout at the end. And of course you can stir your mixture with the Portion Classic. Silcone spoon and spout plus plastic handle means easy cleaning too. Available at Quirky.com for just $8.99 means all chefs should own one.

Also on Quirky are Sliders, a novel idea for skewer cooking and grilling. One of the challenges with using skewers is getting the food off. There never seems to be a fork around when doling food onto your guests' plates. Use fingers? Eeew. The skewers include double prongs, to hold food on, and heat resistant sliders on the prongs. Place the Slider on the plate and slide the food right off. A set of 4 Sliders will only run you $24.95 and is certainly a convenience any grilling guru can appreciate.

Edifier e10 Exclaim 2.0 speaker system

Edifier has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings, and this time around, if you want something that offers a decent bang for your hard earned buck in terms of an audio system, you might want to check out the Edifier e10 Exclaim 2.0 speaker system. The Edifier e10 Exclaim comes across as an active bi-amped 2.0 speaker system which merges smooth curves as well as straight lines, letting you end up with an audio system that is not only extremely pleasing on the eyes, it is also a joy to listen to. Surely this is another piece of evidence that supports the age old adage, "Do not judge a book by its cover."

Specially designed right from the get go to be functional and yet not be too conspicuous wherever you decide to place the Edifier e10 Exclaim 2.0 speaker system, it will be equally at home when used in tandem with a notebook or desktop, placed right beside your spanking new HDTV in your living room, or even to a far more humbler experience of having it work with a smartphone or tablet device. The e10 Exclaim's versatility and extraordinary sound ensures it is the ideal speaker system for any audio device for those who are on a rather tight budget.

Sporting full integral DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and DRC (Dynamic Range Compensation), the e10 Exclaim is said to offer superb tonal balance regardless of volume setting, and it works hard to ensure that all possible distortions remain at an absolute minimum, all the time.

For each e10 Exclaim speaker, it will be driven by its own internal amplifier, where you will get a net total of 36 watts RMS of power in order to "power" all 6 internal active speakers. Apart from that, there will be a couple of passive radiators which will be used in the midrange/tweeter housings so that efficiency and dynamic range are increased. Throw in another 2 supplementary passive radiators to augment deep bass and performance from the woofers, and chances are you will not find many questioning the relatively pocket friendly $99.99 price point.

So Much More than a Longboard

The concept of an electric skateboard evolved years ago. Seems pretty simple, right? Use push power when needed, but get extra juice going up the hill or longer distances. The challenge has been making the controls reasonable enough to use while cruising at a decent speed.

Congratulations to Boosted Boards for blowing away their Kickstarter fundraising goal and creating the latest generation electric vehicle – what they call the "lightest electric vehicle that has ever been made." One of the major drivers behind the project is the fact that most of our travel happens within close proximity – a matter of a few miles. Or for those that commute via transit their destination is still a walk away. Boosted Boards provides a low cost, eco-friendly method to get people to their destination.

Shipping in September 2013 is Boosted's 2000W motor-powered longboard. Max out at 20mph while cruising around town. Conquer inclines of up to 15% with ease too. A full charge on the Lithium ion battery takes only 2 hours and can take you up to 6 miles. Or conserve power and push like a standard skateboard. A regenerative braking system with motor is built-in, meaning your energy and momentum will not go to waste but rather help recharge the battery. Wireless hand controls also contribute to the ride…if you need them. Sure the unit weighs more than an average longboard – between 12-15 pounds – but still a very bearable weight when you need to pick it up.

The price tag is hefty, anticipated at $1,299, but for the right audience the Boosted product will be a no brainer. If interested get in line for a pre-order and Boosted will be in touch as production moves on.

Drift HD Ghost action camera for those who want to record their hair raising adventures

Are you an adrenaline junkie who always loves to regale the rest with tales of your latest exploits, but sometimes, the kind of words in your vocabulary does not do you any justice? If only everyone around you listening in were to see what you saw from your point of view, you thought. Perhaps that idea is not too far fetched to develop further, in the form of the Drift HD Ghost action camera. It is built upon a special feature set, which will also boast of a two-way LED remote control with on/off indicator light – the first of its kind in the industry.

Apart from that, you are also able to enjoy video recording/tagging capabilities in continuous loop mode, while watching a near instant playback of what was just recorded on an integrated 2-inch Gorilla Glass LCD display, clearly marking out the Drift HD Ghost as one of the best all-in-one solutions right now in its device category. The Drift HD Ghost is proud to be different from other point of view cameras which will require aftermarket accessories as well as peripherals for functionality, as it already comes equipped with just about everything you need to shoot professional quality video right from the get go. Apart from that, it also has an intuitive user interface that makes it a snap to use, easy to navigate and even easier to set up.

In addition, the Drift HD Ghost is proud to be the only action camera that comes packaged with a wearable on/off remote control with LEDs and wrist strap. There is a very good reason for the placement of the LED lights on the remote, as they will be able to let you know at a glance the kind of mode that is in use currently, while showing a color-coded system that indicates Video, Photo, Timelapse or Photoburst modes. Not only that, the remote will also streamline functionality as you can capture photos as well as alter function modes from distances of up to 30 feet away, but I would not want to test the maximum distance during crucial moments as you can never tell just when that sudden appearance of a concrete wall interferes with your remote commands.

Expect to pick up the Drift HD Ghost action camera for $399 a pop if you are interested.

Distance Calculating Talking Golf Caddy

Golfing widows, here is another device that you might just want to prevent your husband from knowing or reading about it – the $179.95 Distance Calculating Talking Golf Caddy. The name of it says it all – this is a palm-sized GPS unit which will be able to spill out words that inform you just how far you are away from the green so that you can draw from your venerable expertise and experience to select the right kind of club, and make that money shot. Of course, one would tend to think that if you already have the kind of experience that other golfers are envious of, then you would not need a talking electronic caddy, do you?

One of the main advantages of the Distance Calculating Talking Golf Caddy is this though – it is smart enough to recognize the kind of golf course you are on automatically, thanks to its rather venerable pre-loaded database of 35,000 courses worldwide. A single press of the button on the Distance Calculating Talking Golf Caddy will see it announce the exact distance you are to the front, back, or center of the green in a clear female voice, with an accuracy of within nine feet thereabouts. Not only that, you will be able to check out the data that is displayed on its monochrome LCD display, speaking in one of eight languages. Not only that, there is no need for any expensive subscription fees after purchase, where you can also download up to another 5,000 additional golf courses from the manufacturer’s web site.

Pinhead is one dock that does not raise hell

When you talk about Pinhead, most of the time, my mind would just drift back to the Hellraiser series where he is the de facto leader of the Cenobites. However, what Firebox has in store for you here is a whole lot less scary, and definitely far more fun. This £14.99 Pinhead that we are talking about is a dock that comes in the form of a stand-up guy. All you need to do with Pinhead is to hook up your current 30-pin cable to the rear of the Pinhead, and your device will, in a literal sense, be able to stand on its own two feet proudly.

The moment you are plugged into Pinhead, your iPhone or iPod will be able to stand on your desk or workspace with a renewed sense of pride, while juicing it up simultaneously. If you are on the market for an Apple accessory that is slightly different from the rest, then Pinhead sounds as though it hits the nail on the, er, head. It is compatible with the iPod touch and Nano, as well as iPhone – not the iPhone 5 though as there is no Lightning connector here.

Use Mobile Minutes via Your Home Phone

Long distance phone calls. They still happen. Why pay long distance fees on your land line when you have umpteen hundred minutes on your cell phone? Yet it sure is handy having handsets all over the house. People can talk wherever they are most comfortable. A company named liGo took all these ideas into consideration and developed a new phone/cell phone accessory, BlueWave.

With BlueWave you get the convenience of your cell phone plus the accessibility of your landline handsets. Which means you can use your mobile minutes to make calls from any corded or cordless home phone unit.  Simply plug the gadget into your home phone system via phone cord. Then connect up to three cell phones via Bluetooth. That's it. When your cell phone rings downstairs you'll be able to pick it up on the phone upstairs. If you want to make a call simply pick up any handset and the signal goes through your cell phone. The three connected phones are differentiated on the top of the BlueWave, so you can stay away from calls that aren't going to your phone. Voice commands are possible too so you can do things like talk to Siri through your home phone. And you can always press buttons to get back to your home voicemail when you need to check messages.

BlueWave, £99.95 at Amazon.co.uk, is definitely a new product and currently only shipping in the UK. But for the household that loves their handsets but may not want the hassle of getting a landline or the household that just wants more handsets to talk on while using cellular minutes it is the perfect solution.

See Those Keys

I went to the eye doctor last week. Same old story, they fade a little more each time I go. Sigh. I suppose typing by the light of my screen does not help the situation. Yet we are stubborn. It will take more than an eye doctor appointment to change my computer habits. So instead I will buy more accessories to help me see!

The appropriately named Keys U See keyboard, $39.95 at FirstSTREET Online, fits perfectly into my scheme of continuing to degrade my eyesight! A standard keyboard – 104 keys including 10 key, function keys and hot keys – has been reworked by FirstSTREET. Keys are actually yellow and all letters, numbers and symbols enlarged. How big? As big as the key will allow. So yes, you can actually see where you are on the board! Keys U See connects via USB like any other keyboard. The device is designed to work with PC. There is limited Mac functionality for OS 9.0 or newer (letters and numbers work, no hot keys though). Yes, Keys U See was created for and is geared more to people with visual impairments like macular degeneration. But seriously, aren't most of us driving ourselves there by working by the light of the monitor? Give your eyes a break! Get keys you can see.

Gamers: Confess & Win

If you are a gamer, odds are that you have ditched out on something to get more game time. Dinner at your parents perhaps. Maybe a work event. Or how about studying. Playing video games is sort of the devil on the shoulder sometimes isn't it? We know there are more productive things to do and yet most players log at least 10 hours a week.

The audiophiles at Sennheiser Gaming want gamers to come to confession. No not the kind with a priest, but rather their Facebook Confession Booth. Stop by their page any time before the end of December and give them your best or worst excuses used to give you more gaming time. The player with the best confession will be rewarded big time. How big? A trip for two to electronics heaven, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, next January. ThatWeekly prizes are also being given away. So think back on all the events you bailed on for the sake of your PC or gaming system and come to Sennheiser Gaming confession.

Prosthetic finger could be a boon

Whenever I watch Star Wars Episode III, I do wonder just how much strength does Obi Wan Kenobi has whenever he lays the smack down on Anakin Skywalker in their duel on Mustafar, especially when his hand goes up against the bionic arm of Anakin. Perhaps Obi Wan has been taking some sort of supplements that have greatly increased his bone density? Who knows, but what we do know is this – folks who are missing limbs or part of their fingers and toes will definitely love to have a working prosthesis that does not break the bank. Case in point, what you see above is a prosthetic finger which might just usher in a new age of limb replacements that are highly affordable.

Richard Van As, a South African woodworker who lost four fingers while operating a saw, came into contact with Ivan Owen, an American designer based in Washington state who did come up with a basic mechanical hand in the past. Ivan was approached to develop a low cost, open access DIY prosthetic finger design as a decent alternative to current solutions, and both of them collaborated on the project over the Internet, publishing their progress online to boot.

The initial iteration of the prototype system is not much to shout about, but at least it is a decent start. Made up of pieces of an Erector set, hair ties, zip ties, leather scraps, velcro strips, string, moldable wax, and rivets, it is a veritable collection of parts that make you wonder whether a gadget Frankenstein is in the making. Right at its core the prosthetic lies a formed hand mould alongside a simple system of cables, levers and pulleys.

This particular project is strictly not for profit, and the ultimate aim is to develop a finished prosthetic that is an actual, low-cost DIY reality for the many folks out there who need prosthetic digits, and yet cannot afford them due to circumstances in life. We wish the team the very best!

NanoQ mini quadcopter takes to the skies

Do you love all things remote controlled? If you have answered in the affirmative, then we are pleased to bring you word that QFO Labs, a startup which hails from Minneapolis, has just announced that they will be rolling out a mini quadcopter toy that they have dubbed the NanoQ. It will rely on relatively affordable 3-axis gyros and accelerometers, in order to help it remain nice and stable in mid-flight. Apart from that, it will be accompanied by a one-handed remote which integrates tilt sensors for smooth and natural control. It is different from most of the other quadrotors in the market however, as the NanoQ’s propellers will come in an inverted manner which prevents them from colliding with ceilings. This is a good thing, especially if you have your home's ceiling fan turned on.

Just what kind of dimensions does the NanoQ come in? Well, for starters, it measures a mere 5.25" across while tipping the scales at a diminutive 35 grams with a maximum payload of 10 grams. Having said that, it is capable of remaining up in the air for up to ten minutes on its rechargeable LiPo (that's lithium polymer for you) batteries, with a controlling range of up to a hundred feet (30 meters). The company hopes that the future will see multiple NanoQs competing at flying laser tag, since they are capable of “shooting” one another using onboard infrared (IR) sensors.

The NanoQ does seem to carry far more potential than just being a toy, and courtesy of its relatively low planned price of $149 a pop with its PC compatibility, it could double up as a research platform for university labs that are running on a tight budget. Whenever you hook up the controller to a PC via USB or a USB RF dongle, you are able to send it commands while accessing its sensor data and more.

Hobbit Deluxe Sting Sword

Are you looking forward to the premier of The Hobbit (the first part of the movie, anyways) which will hit the silver screen at the end of this year? Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, then you would probably want to suit up as well when the movie arrives in your locality. After all, it makes the entire movie going experience a whole lot more fun, especially when you get into the mood of things. Everyone should know of Sting by now, where it will glow in blue whenever orcs are around.

Having said that, the $24.99 Hobbit Deluxe Sting Sword from Thinkgeek will be able to help you get into the role, where it has a glowing blue feature as well as plays back battle sounds, measuring a Hobbit-ly 18-inches in length. This ancient elven sword has been passed on to Frodo Baggins from good ol' Bilbo, and this is an officially licensed product for those who are wondering about its authenticity.

Nikko Angry Birds Infrared Control iRacer

Just how far do you think that the Angry Birds franchise is able to go? Some folks figured out that they still have plenty of mileage left, and if you are part of that particular group, you can always check out the £21.99 Nikko Angry Birds Infrared Control iRacer. At least this is not an app that will help you kill time while waiting for the train or bus, but rather, it helps you bond with your kid or friends as you cozy down at home.

The Nikko Angry Birds Infrared Control iRacer are more than ready to wreak a path of destruction, being "real life" versions of its digital counterparts. Built to last and cut across the air, the bird can be catapulted thanks to the slingshot-remote which also doubles up as the charger. Once you have sent the Angry Bird "flying", you are able to control it by using the slingshot remote. There is some work to be done before you are able to enjoy a “real life” game of Angry Birds, as you will need to cut out the green pigs artwork from the giftbox beforehand, piling them up with other collapsible things. Make sure you have a ready supply of AA batteries to keep this game going.
