DIY Nixie Tube Desk Clock

Posted: 14 May 2012 06:30 AM PDT

Ever wondered whether you will be able to have a chance to meddle with a nixie tube, considering this has been quantified by some as the “LED of yesteryears”? Well, here is your chance courtesy of ThinkGeek with the $149.99 DIY Nixie Tube Desk Clock. The name itself says it all – this is basically a timepiece that you ought to put together yourself, and it is meant for those who have a penchant for DIY projects. Soldering experience would definitely come in handy, otherwise you might find yourself rendering the DIY Nixie Tube Desk Clock useless right from the get go.

The kit comprises of real nixie tubes, where the clock will be microprocessor controlled and offers accurate timekeeping. It would be great if the DIY Nixie Tube Desk Clock could come with a built-in alarm – now that would certainly be something. Still, I believe that having this clock would make you refer to the time more often than usual simply because it is very different from what most folks are used to.

The Best Micro Cut Shredder

Posted: 14 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Hammacher has come up with what they call the “The Best Micro Cut Shredder“, and until I try it out for myself, I would have my reservations at placing a superlative adjective right in front of the product name. Anyone given this $239.95 shredder a go yet? Fire away in the comments as to what you think of it. What I garnered from Hammacher is this – this micro cut shredder managed to produce the smallest shreds and cut the most sheets at once, hence is deemed as deserving of its moniker.

Basically, The Best Micro Cut Shredder will be able to slice paper into 0.39″ x 0.08″ indecipherable shreds, which is far smaller than the 1.77″ x .20″ pieces that are churned out by lesser models. Surely this would make piecing together shredded information a whole lot harder, even if you are a puzzle expert. The durable steel blades are also said to be able to easily cut through paper clips and completely destroy CDs and credit cards. Not only that, it is a silent worker, generating 57.03 dB of noise which is quieter than a normal conversation if you were wondering.

After all, it is the epitome of quality as well as brilliant design, and this time around, the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 8 iPhone/iPod/iPad docking station will be on the receiving end of a wireless update.

Yes sir, the new BeoPlay A8 sound system will extend the functionality of the best-selling BeoSound 8, and this is made possible thanks to the inclusion of Apple AirPlay in order to hook up your iPhone or iPad to a flexible world of premium sound – and this can be achieved in an instant as well as sans wires.

The new BeoPlay A8 will be able to intuitively stream music with Apple AirPlay, where it is smart enough to recognize your iPhone or iPad, followed by asking you whether you want to listen to your music through its balanced set of dynamic two-way speakers and formidable Class D amplifiers or not. The BeoPlay A8 will continue from where the BeoSound 8 left off, with both models sharing the same design, specs and outstanding sound. The BeoPlay A8 has an edge over its “predecessor” thanks to the aforementioned integrated AirPlay wireless connection, not to mention a removable Apple docking connector. V-MODA wants to protect your ears with the Faders VIP

Posted: 14 May 2012 01:32 AM PDT

If there is one risk that listening to your favorite tunes while wearing a pair of headphones, it would be this – there is a tendency to raise the volume to ever increasing levels, that you might not notice it, but you are slowly but surely getting deaf. Well, V-MODA has decided to introduce the latest addition to the Ear Armor hearing protection line, calling their latest set of headphones the Faders VIP.

Similar to the original Faders, the VIP edition will protect your hearing by evenly reducing harmful noise levels by 12dB across the frequency spectrum, without sacrificing on the clarity of music and speech which passes through. This noise reduction will be able to be the difference between an enjoyable listening experience and lifelong hearing loss. In fact, it has been tuned by professional DJs, producers, doctors, sporting a quartet of sizes of medical grade fittings that ought to be able to cater to just about any ear size.

Not only that, the Faders VIP will also feature a new detachable cord as well as a high quality carrying case that offers club, concert and event-goers advanced hearing protection.

Concerned parents should heed what Val Kolton, Chief Visionary Officer and Founder of V-MODA, has to say, "Last year's launch of Ear Armor, Inc. created a windfall of amazing feedback from musicians to race and concert-goers. Loud events coupled with the popularity of smartphones, MP3 players and headphones have created a pandemic of hearing loss in everybody from kids to adults and too little is being done to stop it and educate customers. Faders are a universal solution to fully enjoy music and conversations without the damaging effects of higher decibels that cause irreversible noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. Both the cheapest foam and the most expensive custom ear plugs can muddle sound quality and push debris too far into your ear canal causing even more damage to your ears."

Even better news is this – the V-MODA Faders VIP will retail for just $20, coming in 3 color variations Gunmetal Black, Rouge Red and Electro Pink. Now, how affordable is that?

Flying Hovercraft for the uber rich

Posted: 13 May 2012 05:30 AM PDT

You might not be the king of the world with this $190,000 Flying Hovercraft, but you could pretty much come close when you think about it. After all, it is no pittance, the price tag of this puppy. Basically, the Flying Hovercraft does what it does best – to glide over land and water, and yet being capable of soaring up in the air for up to 70mph thanks to the aid of integrated wings. There is also the presence of a 130-hp twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled gasoline engine which is turbocharged and fuel-injected.

The engine will in turn drive its 60″ wood/carbon composite thrust propeller, delivering a 1,100-rpm 34″ lift fan that will inflate its durable vinyl-coated nylon skirt so that it can hover above the ground. It will play nice in fresh- and saltwater conditions, and up to 30% inclines over sand, mud, grass, swamp, desert, ice, and snow. A joystick will let you control three vertical rudders and the elevator, a twist friction-lock throttle controls forward speed, and a variable drive system controls the lift fan for hovering. You can brake, of course, thanks to the lowering of the lift fan’s rpms, and it will eventually end up on Kevlar composite landing skids.

Dragon Grip churns out kung fu noises

Posted: 13 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Once in a while, crowdfunding site Kickstarter does have some pretty cool looking projects, where they have ranged from the usual iPhone 4/4S case all the way to a new remake of a classic game (Leisure Suit Larry). Well, what do we have here today? Dragon Grip Interactive, the folks behind real life gaming experiences, has unveiled the Dragon Grip. Just what the heck is the Dragon Grip, does it allow you to literally hold a mythical dragon in the palm of your hands?

Apparently not, but there is still something very oriental about the Dragon Grip, considering this is a patented hand held toy which is capable of churning out kung fu fighting sound effects. Yes sir, no longer do you need to rely on your imagination when you have a couple of action figures in your hands as you regale tales of old to your son before he heads off to dreamland – just use the Dragon Grip for the added dash of sound effects, and I am confident that many years from now, your son who is all grown up, will still be able to remember the kind of realism his bedtime stories sound like thanks to the Dragon Grip.

The Dragon Grip is now available for pre-sale on Kickstarter.com, and this particular project closes on June 24th next month. To have a better idea on what the Dragon Grip is an all action handheld toy which emits fight sounds, verbal taunts as well as general sound effects which will immerse the player in a video game like experience anytime, anywhere. You will need to do your bit in choreographing those sound effects, using your very own fighting moves and style so that a surreal kung fu experience of your own can be created.

The Dragon Grip was inspired by "Legend City" comic books as well as influenced by classic 1970's kung fu martial art films, resulting in a toy which is cool to look at as well as fun to play. The first edition (black with red) and a special Kickstarter Reverse Color Way (red with black) Special Edition will include unique martial arts inspired dragon logos etched onto the device's handle.
